How to get away with murder!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💋💋💋💋💋
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📒
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 👩🏻🧑🏼‍🦱👩🏻‍🦱👱🏻‍♂️🧔🏻‍♀️

The heroine: Cora - attends Blackwoods University with her best friend Robyn. Cora is a virgin and something bad happened to her and her brother as children. Ever since then she has dreamed of revenge.

The Hero(es): Jarrod - one of the Four Horsemen of Blackwoods (Addler, Des, Calvin, and Jarrod). They are the four kings of the campus. Football players all and the hottest guys on campus. They are all players when it comes to women as well. Jarrod is always grouchy and cruel. He is the cousin of Cora’s best friend and lives with Robyn and her parents near campus.

The Story: Cora pins her hopes of revenge on Jarrod and they make a bargain that he will help her in exchange for her virginity. Jarrod has his own backstory of woe, so he is violent, both on the football field and off. He goes looking for fights often and isn’t always the winner. He likes to even the playing field by picking fights with groups of guys or by getting a bit drunk first.

“I knew Calvin liked pain as much as I did, though he expressed himself in different ways. He preferred to dish it out than to receive it, while I was an equal opportunity sadist. Anything was good enough for me, so long as it left a mark.”

I like the new adult bully theme though Jarrod really isn’t as big of a bully as he seems in the beginning and he definitely grows on you. We find that there is much more to him than his grouchy outward appearance would imply. The story is different than any I have read before and I really ended up hoping Jarrod and Cora can get away with murder. I love that B.B. only does stand-alone books even when she does a series, so there are no cliffhanger endings and you can pick and choose which books you want to read.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Loved It!!

I absolutely loved Jarrod and Cora’s twisted story 🖤🖤. These two broken souls
found a way to get retribution against those who wronged them and it was beautiful to read. The detective said to them “Two wrongs don’t make a right” …….. EXCEPT sometimes they absolutely do. Loved these two together.

One clicked Calvin and Robyn’s book … it’s going to be amazing.

Hope we get all 4 of the boys books 🙏

Sorry, can't help it - it was ridiculous!

4 Horseman / 4 Horsecocks / 4 "Dark" Asshats who seem tough on the outside, but when it comes to the core they're just big sissies. Drinking Japanese whisky and harsh words don't make you a thug instantly...

Anyway, so MCs are trying to play it cool for most of the book and think they can get away with murder. Thanks to the stupid detective, who isn't be able to recognize motive even when it's clear as a day, they get away with it. Adults as usual in this so called "dark romances" are not trusted, they're either bullies, or molesters, or abusers or they just don't care about their kids...

So here was me shaking my head, desperately waiting for the promised one night sex happen for whole 80% of the book. All I could think of was: "Give him some before he gets arrested!!"

__Some super smart Mc's quotes__

"But you watched me murder a man. How could you want more from a monster like that?"

-Yeah like she didn't plot the whole thing and didn't ask him to murder the guy for her... 🥴
"You killed Dannis Silver. You and Jarrod."......"And so the hell what? You're not supposed to know that".

-🤣🤣🤣 Seriously? Hmmmm ok, sorry about that, girl!! 🤦‍♀️
_____________________________

Anyway, the rating is tough for me. I'm not sure if the goal was to make it ridiculous... If yes, then it's brilliant 😁 Let's go with 2.5 stars rounded up for the safety.

Gonna read the second book as well - Calvin and Robyn seems like an interesting characters, but my expectation when it comes to them is loooooow...

Dark. Dangerous. Evil. This book had it all! Strong and courageous characters. A little far-fetched, but that’s the beauty of fiction. It takes you away from reality. This was a somewhat intensely destructive love story as a couple finds their way to each other when a violent act of revenge is committed. Totally on the edge of my seat reading through the entire book. There are some triggers present, which could be difficult for some to read. Excellent start to a new series! Looking forward to reading Robyn and Calvin’s story…

This was a good read. Cora wants revenge for what happened to her and her brother when they were younger. She turns to Jarrod for help. Of course he will do it but he wants something from her in return. Their lives become more complicated but in the end they get their happy ending with each other.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book by BB Hamel and I have to say I’ll definitely be reading more in the future! She is an amazing author and this book was so so good!

It’s dark and dirty and will keep you guessing till the very end. It’s definitely a slow burn and just a warning a murder does take place. And their is talk of child molestation. It’s in the past but very present in the characters life. Your hero has some serious darkness but his girl makes his darkness a little bit brighter. I completely fell in love with Jarrod and Cora. And this seems like book one in this series so I’m excited to see what Calvin and Robyn have for us next. I think it might be darker then this book!

This book caught me off guard. When I read the blurb I immediately knew I wanted to read it. It sounded like an irresistible college bully romance. Well, that part was more or less right. Jarrod Hale is a bit of a bully. He’s one of the Four Horsemen on campus, popular football players who can get anyway with everything.

Jarrod is rough around the edges, the bully aspect isn’t a big factor here. He mainly bullied his cousin who was Cora’s (the h) best friend. He has an antagonistic relationship with Cora but he doesn’t exactly bully her.

Cora is a strong, determined h. She approached Jarrod for a dangerous favor but what he wants in return isn’t money, it’s her virginity. They way they dance around each other, tension growing and chemistry sizzling, is really hot. I’m dying to read the stories of the other horsemen!

Story 4/5, Heat 2.75/5, Darkness 2/5, Angst 2.5/5

Slow burn, they have several rounds of teasing foreplay starting around 45% but he doesn’t claim his payment until 85%.

No condoms, virgin h, didn’t seem like H was a manwhore, no OW/OM drama, no real push away from either, no breakups or separation. No cheating, no cliffhanger for couple and HEA for them. Epilogue sets up next book and is cliffhanger-y but in an intriguing way.

Safety - this is safe in regards to cheating and OW stuff but the favor she asks for and the reason she asks are dark. It involves dark childhood trauma with an authority figure.

I have been a fan of B. B. Hamel for years, so when I saw Black Promises: A Dark New Adult Romance and read the blurb, I knew I had to read it. She is a masterful writer of Dark Romance.

Cora Boyle and Jarrod Hale are not your typical college students, they have layers that unfold with the story that will grab the reader and not let go until the end.

Black Promise is the first book in the Blackwood College series, and I for one can not wait to read what happens next.

I totally am invested in this series just from this first book. The characters are all hiding something that could get everyone into serious trouble. The underlining sub-story of beginning love from messed up pasts, is great and is explaining the reason why they do what they do for each other.
The two main characters Jarrod and Cora, like each other, but are afraid to try ,because they don’t want to be hurt. Their beginning love is cute but also dangerous.
In the end everything works out for them for the most part. They will always have their dirty, dangerous little secret between them.

Fabulous dark and lost characters
It's quite amazing to find romance with such dark characters on the inside, and BB Hamel has managed to give me empathy for the lost souls of Cora and Jarrod.
I found it thrilling to find out how they were going to both evolve romantically, as planning a crime as Cora wishes for revenge. In the end, the story is fascinating as cold as it is scorching.

Two halves of the same coin

OMG!!! I love everything BB Hamel writes, but this new series I think will be her best series yet! I can't give too much away, but here's a little tease... Cora has been dreaming of revenge for so long she can taste it. She needs this for herself and for her brother, but has no idea how to make it a reality. Her best friend Robin has a cousin Jarrod that may be able to help her out.. for a price. What's the price you ask? Well, I can't give that away, but just let me say this story has more twist and turns and loopy loops than the best rollercoasters in the country. I LOVED THIS ADVENTURE and cannot wait for the next installment.

Jarrod & Cora’s Slow Burn Is A Super Dark Romantic Suspense In Which Justice Is Hard To Come By! It Is Non-Traditional. There Aren’t Obvious Answers, Even If The Law Is Clear. Jarrod & Cora Find A Purpose Together, But It Puts Them At Odds With Everyone They Know.

TRIGGER WARNING: Sensitive readers should take note that this story is very dark. It includes gross violence.

ABOUT THE BLACKWOODS COLLEGE SERIES:

This is book one in the Blackwoods College series. It appears to follow four best friends who rule the elite Pennsylvania college that they attend.

Blackwoods College is a little gem – a small regional liberal arts school located in Media, Pennsylvania. Surrounded by woods, the area feels like a paradise, an escape from reality. It may seem like a perfect Ivy League-like institution, but some of its students are harboring deep dark secrets.

The Four Horsemen are idolized on campus. Students clamor for their attention, and they can (and do) have any girl they want. They are all handsome and popular, but a sense of danger also follows them. Jarrod, Addler, and Des may put on a good party face, but it is just an act. Without the crowds, without the masks, they aren’t as carefree as they pretend to be. Cool and calculating, Calvin is a different story; he is pretty much consistent regardless of the audience.

Although it is unclear, the Horsemen are probably in their sophomore, junior, or senior year as this story opens.

Addler Montgomery is picture-perfect with his model good looks. Fans cheer for him as the up-and-coming quarterback for the school team. His family is wealthy, and he lives off-campus in a mansion that he uses to host parties for him and his friends.

Des Willis is the jokester of the group. His boisterous personality ensures that it is never dull when he is around. Chaos seems to surround him. A star wide receiver, he looms larger than life both physically and personality-wise. He is shameless about his debauchery and is the most honest of the group. Des has never had to worry about money. From Texas, his family has dealt in oil and cattle ranching.

Calvin Solar has an air nonchalance, but he thrives on order and control. There is something strange about him; his intensity is terrifying. He is rigid in his ways and errs on the side of caution. He is quiet and often seems bored, perhaps a consequence of his brilliance, but when he directs his attention toward someone, they cannot escape his overpowering gaze. He is twisted, and like his friend Jarrod, he loves fighting and violence. Girls mean nothing to him; he casually goes from one to another. Most of the time he cannot be bothered by much of anything as his attention is so often directed towards his phone. Calvin is not forthcoming about personal matters, but he comes from serious money. His family runs SolarBright Technologies, dealing in arms sales. Some might consider his wealth to be blood money. He has lots of connections in his toolbelt, including connections to good drugs. He lives alone off-campus but rarely invites anyone into his home.

IN THIS BOOK:

Jarrod Hale is a brooding hulk of a man who secretly spends a lot of time in the library. He is the quietest of the Four Horsemen. He was raised by his somewhat wealthy aunt and uncle since losing his junkie parents at age ten. He lives like a ghost, mostly keeping to himself while at home. At school, however, he doesn’t hold back. His cousin Robyn also attends Blackwoods, and he makes no apologies for bullying her. His dark ways and careless looks only add to his allure. His reputation is dirty, and he is arguably the most dangerous of his friends.

Jarrod plays football like his life depends on it, the more violent the better. As a linebacker, he is feared. But football doesn’t give him the satisfaction he so desperately needs. He seeks out the opportunity for a good fistfight whenever possible. Pain gives him the release he seeks – whether giving or receiving doesn’t much matter. He has been on a self-destructive streak lately, and his friends have quietly taken note. Addler understands Jarrod. Both Addler and Des are protective of him and feed off of his mood. But Calvin is most like him.

Cora Boyle, twenty, is sometimes considered a space cadet. She growing up never excelled in school, but she got lucky when she was accepted into Blackwoods College along with her best friend Robyn. The two met as freshmen in high school and are now beginning their sophomore year of college. They commute to classes together from their suburban Philadelphia town. Cora is an eclectic mix of dorky and sexy with her dark emo looks. She lives a rather boring life, preferring movies to keg parties. Although she has had some boyfriends in the past, she has maintained her innocence, choosing to wait for the right time rather than make a mistake she will regret.

Things might appear fine from the outside, but inside Cora lives in turmoil. She felt betrayed by her parents when she was just eight years old, and the pain of that act has become a cancer in the years since. She has witnessed Robyn being bullied by her cousin Jarrod over the years, too, but one day she finally has enough. In speaking out against him, though, she finds herself suddenly on his radar. She sees danger in his eyes but won’t back down, and that chance encounter becomes an unexpected turning point as thoughts of Jarrod begin to pervade her consciousness. She sees something dark in him and decides to take a chance by enlisting his help to make her fantasy into a reality.

Jarrod, too, is impacted by his encounter with Cora. When she asks for his help, he sees it as an opportunity to get what he wants from her. Dannis Silver is nothing to him, but this is no small deal. He must decide if he wants to continue fighting with his fists or take a step further into the dark side by accepting Cora’s request.

As the pair comes to terms and plots their way forward, their chemistry sizzles in the background. But after years of ignoring his cousin’s best friend, people have questions about the pair suddenly spending time together. Jarrod claims Cora is tutoring him, but Calvin doesn’t buy it, and Robyn worries about her friend. Everything could easily fall apart if they begin to raise suspicion. There is suspense as they move forward with their plan and uncertainty about their relationship when once their agreement is completed. Soon, however, they find themselves changing. Their journey to the dark side might drag them down, or it might just give them something else to live for. The couple eventually finds a happy for now ending.

The epilogue is in Robyn’s POV, setting up what will probably be book two of the series, telling her story with Calvin.

Wow! This story is super dark. Good and bad aren’t always clearly delineated, so the heroes are non-traditional. Jarrod and Cora’s story is a slow burn that sizzles as the suspense keeps you on your toes. There is a lot of time spent on the introduction of each of the Four Horsemen here, whose stories will probably follow.

This story is non-traditional, and some may not like it. *Spoilers* I have to say that the direction that the couple goes wasn’t what I expected. They share a darkness, but they find so much more. Their darkness brings them together, but together they find the release they need and a reason to live for the future. They are grounded in one another, rather than dragged further into the abyss.

Jarrod and Cora’s slow burn is a super dark romantic suspense in which justice is hard to come by. It is non-traditional. There aren’t obvious answers, even if the law is clear. Jarrod and Cora find a purpose together, but it puts them at odds with everyone they know. This story is nicely written. The plot is complex. There are many secrets that keep the story interesting. Each character is complex. They are flawed, to say the least. Loyalties are tested. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Jarrod and Cora, with the epilogue in Robyn’s POV. I rate this book 4.5 stars.

Cora and Jarrod are both damaged and lovable at the same time. You can’t help cheering for them to succeed and have a HEA . And you also get to meet the rest of The Four Horsemen on Blackwood’s college campus. This book is very suspenseful and intriguing with action packed. And of course there has to be some sexual chemistry will they have a HEA

Wow!! Loved this book. Cora and Jerrod are wonderful, relatable characters whose non idyllic life circumstances do not define their future. Bound together by a single, heinous act, I loved watching their love story - redemption, drama, and so steamy. The book never got dull. I devoured it. I can’t wait for the next installment.

I had a bit of a preconception of what i thought this book was going to be about. So i was pleasantly surprised it wasnt anything like i thought it was.

Jarrod is part of the Four Horsemen of Blackwoods clique. A quartet of Alpha***** who take great pleasure in tormenting Robyn (Jarrods cousin) and her friend Cora. That is when the bully book similarities end. Jorrod and Robyn's home life is not a happy one. Whilst Cora was brought up in foster care with dark events that have happened to her have influenced her life now. Jarrod and Cora's lives become entwined when a deal is struck between the two of them.

For me thats when this book truly becomes more interesting. With all the clever plot twists but also with the dynamic that builds gradually between both of them. It was a cracking twist at the end too. This was a brilliant read. I cant wait for Robyn's book now

I loved the characters which were a little different from the last B.B Hamel I read. The way that the story started was something I hadn’t anticipated but when it was all laid out it flowed. I really enjoyed it and getting an advanced copy was so awesome. Keep them coming I’m a fan.

Cora wants to make the pain go away. She wants the justice that has been denied her for 12 long years. She has been obsessed with destroying the man who ripped away her innocence to the point that she is ready to ask a monster to make her dreams reality, even if the price is herself.

Jarrod is empty inside, dead, cold, and lifeless. The only thing within him is the clawing monster of rage seething for freedom. It's just a matter of time before it breaks free. He's only holding on because his cousin needs him. Cora's request breathes life into his cold darkness. He wants more than she is willing to give him, but he is more than confident that he can convince her to stay with him forever.

I have to admit that I have not read a book by this author that I did not enjoy. The same goes for this particular story. It really reads like a person taking a leap over a puddle only to realize that they jumped off of a cliff and the puddle is a fathomless blue hole. The reader is so submerged in the deepest, darkest waters, that there is no understanding of where the surface might be, or why they need to come up for air. Drama, tension, and danger are perfectly blended madness. Neither the heroine nor her antihero are exactly sane, they need the other's madness to survive, and by the end of the book the reader does, too.

Yes, there are things discussed within this book that might trigger the reader. This book contains bullying behavior, as well as darker and more depraved themes. Read at your own risk, but don't blame the author. The aforementioned triggers flesh out and explain why the characters are broken, as well as how they survive in such a bleak universe.

Murder Made Boring

I made it to 77% before it was a DNF, but the story just never found its true footing. The beginning of the novel has an intriguing premise, and I wondered how the age and setting would play into the story. These crazy kids are plotting murder in a small, cloistered, "tight-knit" rich community. What could go wrong 🤔 ?

😬 The plan itself was just not well done. I'm not reading a murder mystery, so I might be able to overlook it, but seriously, they left big spotlight on themselves as "hey, we obviously killed someone, and my accomplice has a clear motive". Thank goodness, the adults and law enforcement are not that bright and horrible at their job

😬The FMC is constantly surprised that people are whispering about her and know about her even though it's been established that this is a very small community and she's talking to the campus hotshot violent monster incarnate football star. She's seen with him at a party she doesn't normally go to and she's hanging out with in the community. So, yeah...people are going to know notice you and talk.

😬 I had no idea about the all over the place MMC. He could be interesting, but he does spend the majority of the book being gloomy and brooding. Everyone loves a good Batman (dark, intelligent, always sad, secretly craves pain and murders when the cause is right hero) but we don't have that here because there isn't much beyond the surface to flush out. What we got at 15% of the book was basically it.

😬 this quid pro quo didn't happen until 80% of the book. It starts at 77%, but I didn't care to continue anymore with seeing them get intimate. I was over the silly story.

🫶🏾 I did enjoy how un-college focused the story was that it was about it.

This is definitely a dark romance around an unlikely pair Cora and Jarrod while they are students at Blackwood College. Cora has a past that has consumed her since she was eight and her parents never believing her so she finally finds Jarrod to have a intense darkness about him that could help her with her plan. Jarrod is a young man who plays football and is known to cause pain and be ruthless on and off the field. When Cora speaks with Jarrod he is quick to agree to help kill the god Dr. with a demand of his own, her virginity in exchange. Jarrod’s past is one no child should have to grow up with and he does what he can to protect himself and his cousin from the harm that brews around them everyday. These two together seems to balance one another and how he genuinely cares for Cora is pure and honest emotions. Jarrod is a person who thinks things through and tries to keep the upper hand when dealing the the detective and how she feels that Jarrod and Cora are to blame for the killing but can not find any evidence against them. There is a twist that seems fitting for Cora, Jarrod and his cousin. Once these two fulfill their contract to one another you will see how being together is right for them and their happiness. I look forward to reading the next story in this series! Please be aware that the author warns that some topics in this story maybe triggers. A dark romance with a bully edge. A dirty talking football god wanted by all, but only completely understood by one. Kindred spirits with so much heat they just cannot stay away from one another. And, the beginning of a series that is going to have us hitting READ NOW.

Cora, Sophmore at Blackstone, scholarship student, BF with Robyn, and living with a deep hurt for the last 12ish years.

Jarrod, football god, biggest and quietest of the Four Horsemen, orphan, cousin of Robyn, and always looking to dull his pain.

Cora is looking for revenge. Offers to pay Jarrod for his help. He doesn’t want her money, he wants her virginity.

So, begins their story. She gets retribution and he gets what he has wanted for years- her. Only thing is Jarrod doesn’t plan on letting Cora go just that easy. They have a shared pain. Their households are not what they seem on the inside. They make each other feel alive. They are kindred spirits.

As they let all their truths be known to one another, their actions may have consequences, but Jarrod is all to prepared for them.

Guy is an evil genius.

Book is told thru Cora and Jarrod’s dual POV, with the epilogue told in Robyn’s giving us insight as to what will come in Book 2.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of books by B. B. Hamel, and I was curious about how she’d handle a New Adult romance. The title, “Black Promises” is one that promised it would be Dark. ‘Blackwoods College’ as the name of the series made me think it was going to be a College Bully story. Well, it’s definitely dark and it takes place partially on a college campus because the main characters are college students. But it’s not at all what I expected.

I’m going to extremely vague about the plot because I thought it was startling and I want you to have the opportunity to discover it for yourself. Basically, Jarrod is one of a small group of four football players on campus who are popular and feared. He’s a messed-up guy who’s had a tough upbringing. Pain and adrenaline rushes are fuel to him. Cora is best friends with Jarrod’s female cousin. When Cora comes to him because she wants him to do something drastic, things start to get really crazy. Despite his aggressive personality, the relationship that develops between Cora and Jarrod is a slow-burn before it finally becomes an inferno.

There are plenty of secrets in this book, many of them terrible, and a couple that may cause you to seriously think about your own moral compass. In the epilogue, we find out who is going to be featured in the next book of this series. The set up already has me hooked!

I'm not going to lie and say this book was realistic but... man I was hooked. Jarrod was dark and definitely troubled but he was interesting as fuck. Psychologically I don't think his bloodlust would actually settle after changing his obsession to Cora but, thankfully, this is fiction and isn't it a chick rule where we all want to "fix" them? Cora's character was probably the most realistic but I don't think she shined quite as bright as Jarrod. She struggled with the moral dilemma of her actions and then laughed hysterically despite it. I think she truly was broken by the events but finding someone darker to share that with was really intriguing.

Overall: 4.8/5 - I'd love to give this one a perfect score but, even though it wasn't quite up to that par, I enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. Definitely dark but extremely captivating.

One twisted agreement which only gets darker and never ending

Black Promises is the first book in the new Blackwoods College series by B. B. Hamel. I have read and also own a number of books by this author but this is the first YA/college age story so I was not sure what to expect. This story has darkness all around it and seeping throughout. Jarrod Hale and his three friend are known at Blackwoods College as the Four Horsemen. They are the star football players who can do anything they want and have the dark souls which make them twisted. When Cora asks him for a favor he agrees but only on his terms and in exchange he wants her virginity. She agrees and then let the games begin.
This is a well written book with an intense, dark and mesmerizing story-line. The characters are intricate and multi-layered, sometimes you hate them and other times you love them. But be prepared for a wild ride with potential triggers throughout. If you decided to hope on the journey of Black Promises then you will be richly rewarded. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see what happens next.

I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.

This is book one in this Dark adult romance series by a wonderful author who always delivers great books. This one is no different but yet it is not what you maybe expecting. The description in the title says dark and it is most definitely that and could cause triggers for some people so just be prepared.
Cora, Robyn and Jarrod are all students at Blackwood college and Robyn and Cora are best friends and Jarrod is Robyn’s cousin and is considered a bully. Jarrod is on the football team and is a member of the Four Horseman who are also on the football team.
Each of these three have a past that haunts them, but Cora decides to meet her past head on and that’s asking Jarrod to do something for her. Cora had always caught Jarrod’s eye as kids but couldn’t act upon it because of Robyn. Now that she has come to him for his help, he doesn’t want money as payment he wants her virginity.
This book has a slow build up to Cora and Jarrod’s agreement and Cora develops feelings along the way. Will those feelings come into play and will Jarrod go through with his plan? Another great book from BB and I can’t wait to see what is in store in the next book.

I think I would buy ANY book with this cover model. Those eyes are magnetic! But this book was awesome as well. this series is about a group of friends and acquaintances that go to Blackwoods College, a small, expensive liberal arts school located in Media, Pennsylvania. this book is Jarrod Hale and Cora Boyle's story. Cora was molested by a "doctor" as a child and when she told her parents, they didn't believe her. She has lived with this heartbreak for years and her younger brother was molested as well. She wants revenge, she wants him dead. Jarrod is part of the football team, a tough player, even tougher off the field, and is getting darker all the time. He's protecting his cousin from her abusive father and hates his home life. Cora asks him to do the unthinkable, kill the doctor for a price. Jarrod price is her innocence. This book has great tension, steam, twists, drama, turns, and so much more. I love these characters and I cant wait to see what happens to Calvin, Jarrod's best friend and Robyn, Cora's best friend and Jarrod's cousin. Best of all, like so many of B.B.Hamel's book, you can read it for FREE with your KU subscription. Great characters, great read.
