Rowan thought she had escaped her life as a prisoner.
But even in Lochlann, she is chained by the memories of everything she left behind in Socair.
Of everyone she left behind.
With her people clamoring for war, the responsibility falls on Rowan to enter into a marriage alliance to keep her kingdom safe. That should be easy, considering she’s already received proposals from half the clans in Socair.
But even with plenty of options, she’s left with no good choices.
Will she play it safe? Or will she risk everything for the kind of love she never wanted to begin with?
Robin D. Mahle started out as a pen name I shared with my husband for The World Apart Series, but since then, I've absconded with it to delve into the wonderful world of fairy tale retellings and fantasy romances with my partner in crime, Elle Madison.
When I'm not writing, you can find me spending time with my seven hundred cats and drinking wine by the barrel.
These two brilliant authors did it again! And thank the stars that there's one more book - and that it's coming out less than two weeks after this one!
But seriously, this story is absolutely amazing. Rowan is such an incredible character - not perfect, these two give their characters depth and flaws and I am SO here for it! I'm definitely solidly on a certain Socarian Lord's team, but this review won't have any spoilers in it!
Back to Rowan as a character...she has been through SO MUCH by the time this book starts. And the prologue...I mean, even that gutted me! The things that had to happen for this book to take place in Lochlann were so huge! And I had forgotten the significance and possible ramifications for all of that.
Her family has ways of seeing her and challenging her and breathing life back into her while she's healing and grieving from her time in Socair. And then we add on the potential political fallout from a Lochlann princess being taken captive by two different clans in Socair 20 years after they were last at war!
For the story, with no spoilers, Elle and Robin have a way with complex storylines, witty banter, miscommunication, smoldering moments, and fierce ladies taking on grown men in true battle that just being you right into the story and keep you there.
I absolutely love this series - it made me swoon, laugh, cry, squeal, growl in frustration, and cheer. I highly recommend it.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Well, there was no doubt in my mind that this would be a 5 star read for me. I devoured this in a couple days, reading every single I had time to, and obsessing over it when I wasn’t reading it.
This book had an entirely different vibe to it. We got to meet Rowan’s family, and enjoy the craziness and pure joy that this family is. There was so much happiness in this. We got to meet Rowan’s suitors, as she tries to fix the damage she has done. And meet the Socairan lord we were tempted with in the cliffhanger of Tarnished Crown. Rowan has definitely grown up since the beginning of this series, and while she’s still sarcastic, fiery character who doesn’t think before she speaks, she learns a tough lesson in this book about why her stubbornness could be hurting her, and why she’s allowed to show vulnerability. Well Obsidian Throne isn’t far away, and I’m already dying to read it. I’m sad to think this is already over, but I am always obsessed with this series and need to know how it ends!
Thank you to Elle and Robin, for allowing me to read this as an ARC. This was my honest review.
i have a lot to say about this book, but no idea how to put into words the raging emotions it made me feel (which is, personally, *extremely* rare for books these days). normally, it takes me so long to get through a series because i need space to breathe before going back into the same story for yet another book, so i usually read other books between them, but with this one i physically CANNOT stop thinking about it long enough to read another story😵💫😵💫!!!!!! it took slow burn to a whole new level,, but honestly? i cant even complain because the authors did it SO WELLLLLLLL😮💨🤌 i could *not* bring myself to put this book down, so much so that i lost precious valuable sleep for it BUT IT WAS WORTH IT IDC🧎♀️and the writing was so phenomenally powerful that i was a literal emotional WRECK reading it. this series swallowed me,,, and i can’t seem to find my way out of it.
I love love love this series. This book gave me everything I’ve been wanting for the past 3 books just for it to be more or less ripped away at the end. I never expected to pick up book after book in any series, but I am so pleasantly surprised. Can’t believe there is only one more book. It better end good!
Yikes. I'm sorry everyone, I found this so difficult to slog through. But it did finally get good at about 80%.
It went from a very boring, closed world love triangle type thing (not my cuppa) to, "omg something is finally happening?!" And then it was over. So I'm off to grab book four. I'm hoping it'll be worth reading book two and three to get to. 🤞😅
4.5 // i can’t help but feel the need to justify my ratings of this series… I LIKE THEM. THIS SERIES MAKES ME GIGGLE AND BLUSH AND KICK MY FEET LIKE A LITTLE GIRL. anyway love Rowan and i loved that this book was set in Lochlann. fun change of pace.
I think labeling this series as a fantasy is a bit of a stretch. Fae are mentioned here and there, and there’s a tiny bit of magic, but so far that’s about it. This book was also slow compared to the first two. I’ve gotten this far, though, so I’ll finish the final book and see how it goes. 😂
“I love you with every last broken piece of my soul, too.”
Gawwwd Evander is still perfect!! 🫠 I love everything about this series… & of course the ending is crazy. The only thing I didn’t like was the length of miscommunication… 🥴
