Come with me on a journey through true, short stories spanning my career of over three decades as an ER nurse. Listen to the voices that echo from the worlds behind the doors of big city ERs and a country hospital nestled in the mountains of Arizona. Meet everyday angels in the form of nurses, doctors, patients, extraordinary people, and spirit guides who hover in the veil between birth and death. The ER is challenging with pressures and stresses. You can’t survive if you don’t find ways to laugh, to listen, and to allow yourself to be touched by the courage and strength of the human spirit.
As I say in all my medical read reviews, I'm a sucker for medical stories. Anything that features interesting or unique medical cases / patient stories are for me.
This book was that. Although it did contain some "fluff" pieces about the author's personal life, it had just enough to make it interesting and not lost my attention.
Kathleen Kelly is a nurse with an amazing amount of empathy and compassion for her patients.
These stories are heartwarming, sad, interesting, and more.
Wonderful heartfelt stories of life in an ER. You will run a gamut of emotions reading these stories. But the best thing about this book is that you will believe in the power of miracles.
This book will surprise you, not about what you might expect. Great stories of life's tragedies and the courage and resilience of humankind and the kindness of human beings.
Kathleen Kelly is a nurse, a mother, a writer, and amazingly empathetic. These stories of life in the Emergency Room tell the reader all this and more. I simply could not put the book down once I started. Some of the situations she had to face brought me to tears while others made me smile. In each story, her warmth and gentle sense of humor come through. What a treasure this book is!
This book provides the reader with an inside look at the high stress environment of an emergency room -- without having to be a patient! The author lets us see not only the wide variety of patients that have need for their services but also, the array of emotions that accompany each admission. For not EVERY patient that comes to the E.R. leaves on their own two feet and under their own power! I especially loved the spiritual aspect of this book. I have often felt that some people tend to wait until they ARE in a life or death crisis to turn to God and matters of faith. It need not be that way but sadly, it often is. I am a Christian yet I noticed this personally during my own medical crisis with covid and pneumonia which put me in the hospital via the ER with respiratory failure. I prayed MUCH more than I do normally AND I never felt as close to God nor happier and at peace than I did then. Nurse Kathleen, our author lost her dear son and yet in his death, during moments of crisis in the ER, he sometimes would appear to her and help her with a particular patient. This brought her much comfort and seemed to lead to a positive outcome. Well written, aside from a couple of spelling errors but nothing significant. I liked the variety of patient stories and, like life, that not EVERY outcome was positive!
Hope it is as healing to read as it was to write. I'd love to hear your stories
I'd love to hear your stories about every day angels and miracles. Intuition is not only for mothers. Every one has a story and wonderful life school teachers.
I retired from a hospital after 25 years & could relate to all these stories. There are absolutely miracles that happen hourly at the hospital. Angels are present at birth & death. You can almost hear their wings in newborn nurseries & in rooms of hospice patients. God is everywhere.....
I got so wrapped up in the stories . There's time when I laugh and times when I was moved to tears and simple cried . The stories could be sad and other times when you believe there's a true connection to the other side.
This book held me from page one. I’m a former EMT and ER worker, these tales are accurate, intense and extremely interesting. The sounds are true to life and emotions accurate.
I’m a sucker for a good hospital book. I love reading about real life doctors, nurses, hospitals. Raw, honest, heartbreaking, and hopeful… Kathleen tells her stories with grace and dignity for those involved.
Raw and heart wrenching moments, hard not to get emotional. Kathleen tells her experiences with an honesty and frankness but also with compassion and caring.
