The Sisters of Sea View

Rate this book
When their father's death leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers convinces her sisters to open their seaside home to guests to provide for their ailing mother. Emily and Georgiana agree, but Viola, who wears a veil to cover a scar, detests the idea.

Determined to stay together, the sisters begin the new venture. Instead of the elderly invalids they expect, however, they find themselves hosting eligible gentlemen. Sarah is torn between a growing attraction to a mysterious Scottish widower and duty to her family. Meanwhile, the new situation exposes Viola's scars--both the visible and those hidden deep within--and her cloistered heart will never be the same.

This book was such a breath of fresh air.

Do you enjoy books like Little Women or Sense and Sensibility? The Sister of Sea View reads like a modern day classic with nods to those great novels wrapped up in the warm hug of sisterhood.

The setting of Sea View is lovely and I wanted to book my stay from the first few chapters. I found it a unique premise when the Summers family turned their home into guest house. Each sister must overcome obstacles in order to set their life to rights and it definitely leads to all of them jumping outside of their comfort zone and maybe finding love along the way.

I LOVE the sister relationships, and how they loved each other unconditionally and took care of their ailing mother. The three eldest sisters have their own POV which jumps around quite often but I loved each of them SO much and found I couldn't decide who I liked best.

There is romance in this book but one particular couple is featured. I LOVED it so much. It was beautifully done, intimate and I only wanted more. A few really tender moments were written that made it come alive for me.

The side characters are colorful and so unique and added layers to the story. There are themes about reaching out to those who need it, resisting judgement and accepting people for who they are and I soaked it all in. Its not a Christmas book but it gave me all the feel good family vibes I crave this time of year.

This is my favorite Klassen book so far and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. I'm dying to know how the romantic plots move forward for the rest of the sisters (and one in particular after finishing book one).

RECOMMEND.

4.5⭐This Book is a cozy read and a character-driven story, borderline woman fiction. Multiple POV. Beautifully written. The characters are complex and involved in plots and subplots.

1819, England. Suffering from the financial setbacks of their father’s recent death, the four sisters rally together to open a boarding house and try to save their property.

I love the sister with their own unique personalities and desires, they're kind and caring. The guest brings a variety of backstories, with a few surprises, humor, and a little drama.

This story is about sisters dealing with their own struggles and looking forward, to a better future. there're developing romances, and this story concludes with Viola and Jack's love story, and how they both learn to love and see themselves as more than two scarred souls.

I love this book and hope you'll too, the story is sweet with light and serious moments, and the relationships between sisters have ups and down. The descriptions were wonderfully visual for the seaside village of Sidmouth and the guest house of Sea View.......and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Do you like Little Woman? then you'll like this story. Highly Recommended!

I received an eARC copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are completely my own.

4.25 ⭐️

The Sisters of Sea View is the first novel I’ve read by Julie Klassen, and not my last. I really enjoyed how real the relationships between Sarah, Emily, and Viola were—they had their ups and downs, their moments of closeness and others where they didn’t get along. The author did a great job with that family dynamic and making it both interesting and relatable. Also—the disability reps in this book was one of my favorite things. Without giving away spoilers, one of the MCs was born with cleft pallet and was left to navigate the scars her surgeries left in an unforgiving society that judged one’s physical impairments. The biggest takeaway with this MC, and another who was wounded in war and left with many physical/emotional scars, is this: Scars don’t make us less worthy of love. We are loved whether we are whole or broken.

(Also, can I just say—I loved Viola and Major Hutton’s story 🥲)

My only complaint is that the switch between the three sister’s POVs felt abrupt and difficult to transition into because they’re not sectioned off with ornamental breaks, indicating a switch in POV. They’re grouped together, which made it a bit tricky to remember what POV I was reading.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for an eARC of The Sisters of Sea View. A positive review was not required, only my honest opinion. All thoughts are expressly my own.

The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen - 3.5 Stars

Julie Klassen does such a great job with the research of her settings and history in her books. I can always see that come through in her stories. In this one, we see 4 sisters, but we follow 2 more closely then the other 2 in this book. We do see all 4 sister's POVs throughout the story, which I think hindered my enjoyment since I listened to the audiobook - I should have physically read this since there were so many POVs but I did overall enjoy the story.

The sisters are Sarah, Emily, Viola and Georgina. In this one, we see mostly Sarah and Viola's story. I related a lot to what Viola was experiencing through her scar and being self conscious. Loved her ending in this book and how she grows throughout to tell her story and help someone from this bad surgeon. Sarah is the oldest and is trying to keep the family together pretty much - they are all suffering from bad finances where their father had passed away and the house was entitled to someone else. So they turn the home into a place where guests stay to make some money in the meantime and start a family business. We see Sarah start to form a romance with a Scotsman so I liked that as well. :)

We see a LOT of Jane Austen references so if that is something you love in books, pick this up! I loved it.

As far as faith content goes, we saw some references but it was light and natural in the story. Many people have said this would be great for fans of Little Women as well, and I can definitely see that, especially as I have started to read that book recently for myself.

If you like a good family story, with some romance and an England setting, pick this up! I will be continuing in the series but plan to physically read it versus listen to the audiobook to ensure my understanding of every character POVs in the future.

Julie Klassen is an auto-read author for me, and I'm so excited for a new series to devour! The Sisters of Sea View very much has the vibe of her Ivy Hill series, with a slower pace and rich details intricately weaving together the lives of her characters and immersing the reader in the setting. The story is told from multiple perspectives, and doesn't focus on one couple only, but creates an ensemble cast that I anticipate will continue throughout the rest of the books. Each sister has her own unique and vibrant personality, and I loved seeing them come into their own and develop their strengths in their new circumstances. Such a cozy read that held my interest through each page and plot development. I can't wait for the next installment!

An entrancing story of impoverished sisters, who support themselves by turning the family home into a guest house and along the way, grow up, share kindnesses that change others’ lives, solve small mysteries, and fall in love. A breath of fresh air. Looking forward to book #2. Loved it!

This is Inspirational Regency Fiction at its absolute best!

The Sisters of Sea View was a wonderful book.
I have been reading this authors' books since she has started writing and I don't plan on stopping. I love how well researched her books are, you truly feel as though you are right here in the setting with the characters experiencing it all.
The setting is mostly at Sea View, a large home in Devonshire. After the unexpected death of the father, the ailing mother is unable to work so the four sisters devise a way to bring in money to save the house from being sold. They turn Sea View with its gorgeous view of the sea from its bedrooms into a home taking in boarders.
It takes a while to set up all the characters as there are many, the new boarders, the townspeople, people off visiting, hired help and more.
Once we get past all of this the books goes at a smooth pace.
There are four sisters and each one is lovely and has a unique place in the book.
This book has the four sisters present but concentrates on the story of one of them more than the others. If I had a guess I would say, each sister has her own story.
It was pleasing to see a sister who didn't enjoy mixing in company because of what she thinks is a deformity that she keeps covered become less self-conscience and sure of herself.
There are characters staying at the house when it becomes a boarding house, some definitely a little quirky. We get somewhat of a backstory of these characters, and I think we'll see more of them in future books.
One thing is for sure, I would love to visit Sea View and go into the sea there. It sounds so peaceful and relaxing there.
I am really looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series. It will be hard to wait.

A DELIGHT.

I really enjoyed this! Especially via the audiobook. It had fantastic narration and I was wrapped in this historical story (with a good dose of romance).

The sisters were all unique in their personalities and lifestyles. I love that they came together to find a way to stay in their home and that even with the ups and downs of running a bed and breakfast they found their footing within the home. I love strong relationship bonds like this and I love supportive families. The path is definitely not straight, but the bends and valleys are what makes it dynamic.

I love all of the subtle romances throughout. This specific book focused on one sister more than the others (of which my assumption is each book will have a sister as more of the main focus than others) and I loved her points of view the most. This book is wholesome and they’re Christian themes. I didn’t find these heavy handed, more so beautifully woven throughout. The sentiments of learning to love yourself and forgiveness are some of the themes I appreciated most.

A wonderful read, I look forward to future books with these sisters!!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Fiction
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a parent, a flooding situation, injuries from war

One of my favorite ‘older’ series is the Gresham Chronicles by Lawana Blackwell. One of the reasons I love it is that you get the chance to become deeply invested in a variety of main and supporting characters by following them down different paths throughout each book individually and as a series. There might be a primary character that is slightly more the focus per book but often it’s truly an ensemble cast. Enough swoony romance to make me happy, too, but not so much that it overpowers the varying story threads. I am delighted to report that Julie Klassen’s new On Devonshire Shores series reminds me of Blackwell’s Gresham Chronicles in all the best ways.

In The Sisters of Sea View, the perspective switches between three of the Summers sisters (older sister Sarah and twins Emily & Viola) who have recently been forced to turn their seaside home into a guest house for financial reasons. As their mother suffers from mobility issues, Sarah is the main manager of the guests in her stead. Gregarious Emily helps with some of the management tasks, as well as engaging the guests in friendly conversation. And, due to her cleft palate surgical scar, Viola prefers to earn money by reading to invalids instead of interacting with the guests. Through each respective narrative, Klassen not only allows us to become more acquainted with these easy-to-love heroines but also to get to know the other characters through their eyes.

And what an absolutely lovely & eclectic mix of characters it is! Readers will definitely be able to find at least one guest or family member or villager to identify with – likely more. I know I have several whom I hope we can revisit in future books, not the least of which are three specific men who cross their paths: The initially-gruff and battle-scarred neighbor whom Viola is hired to read to, the young Scottish widower who finds a kindred spirit in Sarah, and the dashing bachelor who seems smitten with Emily. Only one of these budding romances finds resolution in this first book, but I would be very surprised if we’ve seen the last of the other two. Each of the romances not only filled my KissingBooks-loving heart with joy, they also gave me all the Austenesque feels. Don’t worry, though, if you prefer less romance, these threads don’t consume the story – rather, they are just another aspect to the lives we become invested in while reading the book.

As for the overall theme… well, I think this snippet from a conversation between Viola & the precious Mrs. Denby near the end of the story sums it up perfectly:

“A solitary soul can do little. But together… what lasting beauty we create.”

In fact, I probably could have summed up my review with those thirteen words and saved you having to read all my ramblings lol.

Bottom Line: The Sisters of Sea View is another warm and charming read by Julie Klassen, just as I expected! There are several poignant themes woven through these pages and some wonderfully layered characters that even if you’re not here for the swoony romance you’ll find a lot to love about this book. With flavors of Little Women and Sense & Sensibility, the Summers sisters will easily set up camp in your heart and don’t even get me started on the grumpily lovable hero next door and the other intriguing men who stay at their guest house! Klassen continues to remind me, with each new book, why she’s long been a favorite author, and I’m so excited to see where this series goes.

This book is the best book I've read in awhile, and I've read some good books lately, but I had sooo many feelings and emotions with this one, feelings and emotions I haven't felt in a long time. I have to admit, I've been a little bit disappointed with Klassen's last few books, they just didn't have what hers usually do. But this one made up for them all!
I'm just very grateful for this book right now, it's just what I needed...it made me smile and laugh and want to cry so many times; never was there a dull, boring moment. If you want to read a sweet, meaningful book, I highly recommend this one. 💗

The Summers family has lost their father, and because there are four daughters and no sons, most of his estate is going to an unknown heir. What they have left is their home on the Devonshire Coast, but they do not have enough money to maintain it. They devise a plan to keep the home by turning it into a guest house.

This is the first book in a new series, and it's a winner.! I really enjoy books about boarding houses or hotels because new characters are always coming in as guests, bringing fresh personalities and challenges. The guests in this first book bring mystery, difficulty, and friendship. The sweet hints of romance are a nice touch, but what I liked even more is the self-discovery and growth the sisters experience when they leave their privileged bubble and have to earn their living. I like the fact that the Summers sisters are very different from each other in personality and the unique ways they face their own obstacles. Faith in God through adversity is also a theme in this Christian novel.

Fans of Christian fiction with strong female characters will enjoy this one.

4.5 ⭐️ I enjoyed this book so much! After hearing several people mention that this book reminded them of Little Women, I was even more excited to read it. I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint! As this story follows the lives of four sisters who are close to each other and their mother, it definitely reminded me of Little Women and I loved that so much!🥰

I loved the family dynamics in this book! I really enjoyed how each of the the sisters had their own unique personality and gifts. I had fun getting to know Sarah, Viola, Emily, and Georgie, and watching them come together to run the guest house.
It was also fun getting to know the side characters, especially Mr. Henshall, Mr. Hornbean and Mrs. Denby.💗

I also loved the setting by the sea! I loved the cozy feel of the book and following the sisters day-to-day life. It’s a character-driven book but I really enjoyed that. There was always something interesting happening so I never got bored.

This book focuses a bit more on the sisters running the guest house than romance but the romance that is in this book was perfect! Jack and Viola were simply perfect. I loved them so much! I could’ve read a whole book just about those two. I loved their character development, especially Viola’s. She was probably my favorite character her in the book. Jack a close second.💗

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book! The coziness, the characters, the family dynamics, the romance… all of it together made for a really great book. It definitely reminded me of books like Little Women and Sense & Sensibility so if you enjoy books like that, I think you’ll really like this one! I’m so excited to continue this series!

Lovely start to a new series!

With five sisters and no male to inherit, a widowed mother and her five daughters choose to turn their summer home (they of course lost their primary estate to a male relative) into a guest house. Responsible Sarah takes charge while their mother recovers from illness.

Twin Viola was born with a hair lip and wears a veil and rarely goes out in public. She chooses to support her family by reading to invalids. I especially loved this part of the novel. Viola blooms in confidence by helping others.

Look forward to the next in the series!

“My scars are far more extensive than yours.” “Mine run deeper.”

One of my favorite Julie Klassen novels! It’s a fantastic start to a new series! This beautifully written tale of sisters set in Regency Sidmouth drew me in from the beginning. It’s a gently told story of love, loss, scars, and resilience. As each sister grapples with new circumstances after their father’s unexpected death, we see both their strengths and weaknesses. It’s a well researched elegant nod to Jane Austen with a Louisa May Alcott feel as well. A slow burn, romantic, character driven story that kept me engaged til the end.

With the death of their father, second born Sarah blames herself and takes on the responsibility of caring for her ailing mother and three younger sisters. When no ready solution to their financial situation presents itself, she enlists her sisters to help turn their seaside home into a boarding house. What they don’t anticipate are the interesting, handsome, and sometimes eccentric guests. There’s even an appearance by the Eltons from Jane Austen’s Emma! As the story progresses, each sister hones new talents in unexpected ways to make the boarding house work.

There’s a bit of mystery surrounding their father’s death along with the abrupt departure to Scotland by a fifth oldest sister. The reasons she left are teased out throughout the story, but the explanation isn’t fully given. In addition, Sarah and Emily both have lost loves and must decide if they will open up their hearts again especially with the arrival of two handsome gentleman, Mr. Stanley and Mr. Callum Henshall, a widower from Scotland.

Perhaps the most endearing sister to me was Viola. Born with a cleft palate, she underwent numerous painful surgeries to correct the defect. She’s understandably wary of people and has an exaggerated view of her scar. When her beautiful twin sister Emily hires her out to read to invalids, she’s upset, but is willing to try to help the family. What she doesn’t expect, is to meet the irascible Major Jack Hutton who was injured in India. Despite his scars, he’s still a handsome, powerful man. The sparks fly as they match wits. Both have fiery personalities, but as Viola reads to the Major and he begins to heal, their relationship grows from animosity to admiration. Both help the other see themselves clearly.

I loved the relationships between the sisters. Each has a unique personality: there’s Sarah the caretaker and aspiring baker, Emily the beauty with a talent for writing, Viola with her musical talent, and the sunny youngest sister Georgiana. I enjoyed teasing out the mystery of each character and their circumstances. There are quite a few curve balls thrown into the story and I can’t wait to see how everything works out in subsequent books.

This is a must read for Regency romance lovers, especially those who enjoy a well written, heartwarming family drama. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

This was a delightful read about 4 sisters and their mother who open their house up to guests when they find out their father left them with mounting debt. I enjoyed the banter of sisters, the mother who kept the calm even though she was "sickly" herself, and the many different suitors to the sisters who helped bring them to understand a guest house was not the end of the world.

It was also the story of sister, Viola, who was born with a left pallet, and how she did not like to be seen in public because of the stigma of her lip. But when she is volunteered, by her twin Emily, to read to those who can't, she learns that beauty is on the inside.

I enjoyed this story very much and cannot wait to read on with the sisters and hope they all find the happiness Viola found.

“A solitary soul can do little. But together...what lasting beauty we create.” 📚☕

This Christian historical fiction / Regency-era romance novel was full of quotable phrases. Since I’m the quote queen, I’ll share just one more favorite:

“I find we often worry too much about how people see us. When the truth is, everyone else is more worried about how we view them.”

I feel as though I’ve just returned from an extended vacation - back in time to 1819 Sidmouth, England in for a stay at the Sea View - alongside the Summers sisters and their guests. 😁

Maybe it’s because I’ve read several Julie Klassen books.
Maybe it’s because Julie Klassen is a master researcher of Regency Era.
Maybe it’s because her book covers show characters & are gorgeous.
Maybe it’s because I’ve learned to take her very densely detailed novels slowly.
Maybe it’s because I’ve learned to make lots o’ notes and tabs as I go.
Maybe it’s the ‘Little Women’ vibes that I felt.
Maybe it’s the way the sisters weren’t perfect but worked together in the end.
Maybe it’s the mystery of some guests and the wayward, missing sister.
Or maybe it’s because Klassen’s writing gets better with every novel she writes....

I think it was all of these combined and more that made me love this book.

Either way, this book seals the opinion I’ve had for a while… Julie Klassen is the queen of Christian Regency romance in my eyes.

-Yes, there was a character list in this book that stretched for days, but each and every one was described naturally, is memorable, and had a purpose to the storyline. I could say the same about each scene and landscape added.

No fluff.

The map is great. Each page is jam-packed full of detail.

***HOWEVER, in my humble opinion, if you try to read too quickly or “listen” without seeing the words (for most people), you will be lost in the sheer volume of characters and activities.

I can see how some people may feel disconnected from characters or overwhelmed if only listening to the book or trying to read too quickly.

I enjoy Klassen’s books best when I have a physical copy AND the audiobook and go slow!

The atmospheric coast and warmth of the sister’s home/hotel made me feel transported. Truly. And one sister’s love story and growth stole the show and was fun to follow.

Even though I felt it could have been a wee bit shorter, I didn’t want the story to end.

Knowing this is a series with book #2 waiting for me on my bookshelves, and book #3 projected to release in December 2024 added to the enjoyment as well.

No profanity and squeaky clean romance~Yay and Yay!

'Some guests have come to Sea View for a holiday others for hidden reasons of their own...'

If that tagline on a Julie Klassen book doesn't hook you, I don't know what will.

My favorite thing about this book was the characters! If you are a Little Women fan you NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE!

It was charming, well written and completely entertaining. This book follows 4 sisters and their mother with all 4 sisters points of view. At first, I didn't realize the POV was changing, and had to go back and reread to make sure I knew who was "speaking". Once I got the hang of it it was so fun having so many different stories happening at once. Because this is the beginning of a new series I am absolutely anticipating each and every book that follows!

I usually think of Julie Klassen as a mystery or suspense author and while there is a mild mystery with some of the characters I would call this a historical romance more than anything else. And the romance in this is oh, so sweet!

Five stars, can't wait for more! This is one of the BEST Julie Klassen books I've read... and I've read a lot of them!

I can't wait for what comes next!

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own!

I want to start this review off with a warning. Clear your calendar. If you have anything on your calendar when you decide to read this book, you'll want to cancel because this story is so good you will be loathe to put it down.

I felt so completely a part of this story though I wouldn't be able to tell you if I felt like one of the sisters or one of their guests. I was a little afraid that this would give me too much of a Little Women vibe, but that wasn't the case at all. There was a bit of a feel to it, but not to the extent that I thought the author was trying to recreate that story. It felt like Sanditon, Little Women, and Pride & Predjudice all wrapped up in a story all it's own. Now would be the time to give an adoring sigh.

The characters, ahhhh so many I wish we could talk about each one individually! Cranky neighbors, odd guests, alluring visitors, quaint elderly people, and the list goes on. I would love to do a break down of my thoughts on each one and then we could discuss, but then that would take all of the fun out of you getting to know each of them.

Let's talk about the sisters. While I thought this story was going to be focused on Sarah, the eldest sister at home, it really focused on the oldest three in equal measure. Georgiana is the youngest, and though she was in the story plenty, she wasn't really the focus. Sarah takes on the responsibility of keeping the family afloat after their father passes. The sisters aren't keen on opening a guest house, but they have little choice. They each have to play a part. Twins Emily and Viola are oil and water. Emily speaks her mind and talks so fast it's hard to keep up. Viola wants nothing to do with the running and upkeep of the guest house because she's reclusive so she has to find a different way to pitch in.

The way the author wrote the story, you are immersed in Sidmouth life and it's surroundings. So much so, you can almost picture it. She goes into a lot of detail to bring it to life. Typically that much detail would deter me from reading so intently, but because of her gifted writing, it gave me this odd sense of familiarity.

Needless to say, this story was fantastic. Having to wait for book two isn't going to be easy, but these characters are going to stay tucked away in my heart until book 2 shows up!

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Squuuueeeeeeppp! (that's me squealing and eeping over this new series!) My twentieth Julie Klassen novel and I'm still in love with her storytelling.

'The Sisters of Sea View' reads very much like a British classic-- think Larkrise to Candleford or Cranford. Very much in the same style as this authors's Ivy Hill series. Impoverished sisters and their ailing, widowed mother are forced to turn their home into a guest house. The story is told from the sisters' POV as they make the necessary adjustments, It's full of laughter and drama, including a wee bit of heartache, and the most wonderful array of secondary characters that make up their guests and local villagers. There's even a few nods to Jane Austen if you keep a sharp eye out.

And, oh my, some of the historical details -- from medical 'advances' to the ridiculous sounding bathing machines to the alluring tidbits of life along the coast during the Regency era. But as fascinating as all that is, it's the way the author develops her characters and weaves their diverse backstories into a wonderful tapestry that celebrates what it is to live in community with others. So touching in places and inspiring throughout.

And we don't have the complete story yet. While this first book in the series wraps up wonderfully, there's definitely more on the horizon for these sisters and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

This was a delightful read. I loved how the details and description created a beautiful atmosphere and how these sisters worked together to make their home a guest house. I must say it was a little challenging keeping up with all the POV’s and there were some areas where I did not get closure but I believe that will be coming up in the next book. I am excited to follow these sisters into the next novel.

Fun historical fiction. I enjoyed this story of a widowed mother and her four daughters finding a way to fight off poverty by running their home by the sea as a guest house. Lots of neighbors and little bits of drama and an ending that leaves room for a sequel.

Klassen’s writing is lovely and pulls you into the story. I enjoyed the coastal location and hotel setting, but it had too many characters which hindered my experience. I liked Viola and the Major’s story.

I first read Julie Klassen years ago at the suggestion of my librarian (the book was The Secret of Pembroke Park). I was immediately captivated by the subtle hints of Jane Austen and the flowy prose. Since then, I have read almost every book she published.

Of course, I would not pass up the opportunity to read The Sisters of Sea View and its promise of another fantastic series.

The book introduces the reader to five sisters who were displaced from their home after their father died and a male relative inherited it. But unlike Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, the Summer Sisters were not left to fend for themselves. Instead, their father left them a summer house by the coast of Devon.

Struggling to cope with the expenses, the sisters opened their house to paying guests. While this solved their financial issues, it also brought new challenges, especially for Viola, one of the sisters with a scar on her mouth due to a cleft lip.

The romance has all my favorite elements: grumpy, scared, traumatized hero, strong, vulnerable, loyal, and loving heroine, slow-burn relationship, compelling relatives, and a little bit of angst.

I fell in love with Major Hutton right from the start, which is not surprising as I have a thing for convalescent soldiers. But he was incredibly loveable, as was his father and his valet Armaan.

The chemistry between him and Viola was wonderfully sweet, and their HEA filled my heart with joy.

The only sad part about the book is that I have already finished it. So now I have to wait to find out what will happen to Sarah, Emilly, Georgiana, and Claire (oh, I so much want to know what happened to Claire).

Fantastic read!

Disclosure: I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

Story Enjoyment Rating: 8/10 Christian Faith Rating: 2/3

The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen is a historical Georgian romance following four sisters and their mother who all live in the English seaside town of Sidmouth. When their father died, his house was entailed to a male relative. So the sisters had to leave and live in their holiday home. To make ends meet, they were forced to take in paying guests.
The story is told from all four sisters’ points of view. Sarah is the oldest and the one who is always trying to keep the business going and the family together. Emily is a writer and is also interested in men and romance. Viola was born with a cleft lip and is very self-conscious about the scars left by the surgery. Georgina is a tomboy and always wants to be outdoors.
There are references to Jane Austen throughout the book, which was fun to read.
I live in Devon and I loved seeing Sidmouth and the surrounding area. I loved all four sisters. I enjoyed the romance. I particularly liked Viola’s character and story.
There were a lot of characters, and I found it hard to keep track of all their names and side stories. I also felt the book could have done with a stronger overarching plot to tie all the smaller stories together.
There were references to the Christian faith. However, they did not play a large role in the story.
I definitely want to continue with this series and see what happens to the other characters. It feels like it could be quite a long family saga.

Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen is the first book in her new Devonshire Shores series. This character-driven historical novel captivated me with its beautiful writing and sweeping drama.

Story Recap:
After their father dies and leaves them impoverished, Sarah Summers and her sisters need to find a way to support each other and their ailing mother. Sarah suggests they open their seaside home to guests, and sisters Emily and Georgiana agree to open their home. However, Viola doesn’t like the idea of opening up their home. Instead of helping with the guesthouse, Viola takes the position of reading to an invalid, Major Hutton

The story follows the sisters as they navigate the issues of running a guest house and their interactions with the varied guest who come to stay.

My Thoughts:
I loved this story of sisters and their struggles and triumphs in running their guesthouse. This first book focuses on the story of Viola, who has a horrible facial scar, that she hides by wearing a veil. Her trauma of growing up disfigured and how she finds love is wonderful. I loved this heartwarming romance so much.

I like that the sisters were very realistically portrayed. They had their ups and downs and didn’t always get along, but their love for each other shined throughout the book. As well as their love for their mother.

The various guests who show up are also very entertaining. They keep these sisters on their toes! I can’t wait for the future books and learn about the romances of the rest of the sisters.

Recommendation: I highly recommend The Sisters of Sea View to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.v

I really enjoyed the very descriptive setting of this quaint seaside town - the map in the front of the book was charming. I would love to visit it!!
The sisters camaraderie was fun and how they cared for their mother was sweet. They all pulled together when their financial situation became in need of revenue and opened their home as a vacation spot to rent rooms. The first set of guests were definitely a mix of characters, most in a good way!
There were many plots to follow but overall, each of the sisters found their way to pitch in and I enjoyed reading about their different personalities. One sister found her true love 💕

What a wonderful start to a new series. Loved the setting by the sea side with a guest house. With hints to Jane Austen and an amazing cast of characters (including Parry) my attention was happily caught throughout the book. I especially loved Viola's story in this book. I can't wait to read more about the sisters in future books in the series.
