Arkham Private Investigator, Arthur Lester, wakes up with no memory of who he is, with a strange, eerie voice guiding him through the darkness. Blind, terrified, and confused, his journey begins with a series of mysteries in the hopes of understanding what has happened.
As cosmic horrors begin to seep into the world around, Arthur must ask himself whether this creature truly wants to help him or are its intentions more… Malevolent?
I know it’s an ongoing series but I’m going to mark it as done because I’ve listened to as much as there is currently.
This series made me cry so many times and there were some moments where I got so invested in the plot I actually started like talking to my phone as if the characters could hear my disappointment about the things they have said to one another.
One thing I really loved about this series is how immersed you could become into the story, like you could close your eyes and be there in the situation with them, Johns descriptions created such a clear image in my head. One time during the first episode there was a gun shot and I actually jumped back because I forgot I was in public, needless to say I got a few stares for that but it was definitely worth it.
I would recommend this to fans of the Magnus archives, although one thing I would be weary of are some of the topics brought up in this podcast are displayed in a heavier way in comparison to the Magnus archives. If there are any topics which are upsetting to you, the malevolent podcast website has a list of the episodes and their trigger warnings, just thought that everyone should be aware of it!
( Format : Audiobook ) "I don't know who I am or where I am." Not so much a good read as a great experience. Performed by the author, Harlan Guthrie, with music composed by Justin Thomas James, this horror story in 20 parts is crepy, inclusive and at times downright jump out of your seat scary. A fantastic production from the Soundbooth Theatre studio. And free.
If it's on goodreads the I might aswell add it for the reading goal. Jesus christ what to say about Malevolent? It's absolutely consumed my life for the past three months and I think it's going to continue for a good long while yet. Arthur and John mean so much to me and I hope this series continues for another 5 seasons (with as little arthur/john death as possible, 43 ruined me).

one of my favorite podcasts !! amazingly written characters, LOVE the horror (i looove lovecraftian stuff and malevolent is filled with it) 10/10 made me cry a lot
this is quite literally one of the best pieces of media i have ever been lucky enough to be alive at the same time of its existence. it is up there with hamilton, and anything by neal shusterman, and what little i know of undertale through the bits of exposure to the fandom i had long ago. the dialogue is as thought-provoking and beautiful as the plot is terrifying and action-packed. this story of begrudging friendship, of grief and acceptance, of cults and ancient horrors unknown to humankind, it weirdly enough taught me more about conflict resolution than anything i’ve experienced in my relatively short life so far. it is also so, so immersive (sometimes *too* immersive, but i’m not complaining here). the sound effects and voice acting are incredibly done, it feels like you’re really there. you can close your eyes and feel like you’re really arthur. when i started the first episode and realized how the creator was going to fit in all the (very descriptive) narrating, i went, “a-HA, Mr. Guthrie, how clever you are!”. and all of this—the writing, the acting, and the effects—are all created by one person?? holy crap???
end note: what sold me on this series is that malevolent is extremely character driven, even though the characters in question are in near-constant peril. you will laugh, you will cry (ep 20? i did indeed shed a tear or 5), you will may or may not have to stifle a scream, and you *will* yell “YES/NO ARTHURRRR” right alongside john. it’s an incredible ride. and as of right now, this is only my review for the first two seasons. i can’t believe i have a whole 2 more to listen to. and i am SO EXCITED :D
edit 7/6/24:
"Your face. I hadn’t seen your face." "Let me guess: The cold, calculated demeanor of –" "You have vomit all in your beard."
Season 1: 4 stars Spoiled myself for the ending by looking at fanart :') Overall pretty engaging though. Excited for season 2.
Season 2: 3 stars This season was fairly slow without a lot of mystery to it - I get the sense it was more to set up the next season, but Kayne is a very interesting character (though I did think his name was Kanye for the longest time).
