An Amish Legacy #3

Breaking New Ground

Rate this book
Korey Bontrager and Savannah Zook are just pretending to date—but could their feelings turn into something more?

Korey Bontrager knows he’s been an immature dummkopp. When his widowed dad remarried, Korey was unwelcoming to his kindhearted stepmother. Then he became estranged from his older brother. But after fourteen months in Ohio, God called Korey back to Pennsylvania.

Easier said than done. Back home, Korey feels left behind by his family and friends, who want to see him happily married. Instead of looking for a new relationship, he finds himself spending time with Savannah Zook: the most outspoken maedel he’s ever met. She’s also confident and brave, having raised her younger brother from a young age. And she’s a natural beauty. But, hard as her friends try to convince her otherwise, she has no interest in dating. Her priority is looking out for her bullied brother.

So when Savannah suggests they pretend to date as a way to get her friends—and his family—off their backs, Korey readily agrees. Soon, he can’t imagine life without her. But could Savannah ever truly be part of his future?

Set in the faithful Amish community of Lancaster County, Breaking New Ground gives the most stubborn Bontrager a chance to redeem his story.

This is a Clean Amish Romance, and this is the third book in An Amish Legacy series. I have read the first two books in this series before picking up this book. I do feel you need to at least read the second book in this series before picking up this book. A lot of the characters in this book play a big part in the second book in this series. The second book is the book you get to see a different side of Korey, and the events they talk about in this book happened in the second book. I am happy we get to see a better side of Korey. I loved the characters in this book. I did feel the main character acted younger than they were, but I can see why they acted that way. This storyline really touched my heart. The ending of this book had me crying so much. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Zondervan) or author (Amy Clipston) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

BREAKING NEW GROUND is the third book in the Amish Legacy series. BREAKING NEW GROUND is filled with love, grief, forgiveness, second chances, romance, and healing. We met Korey in the previous books and he has always struggled with his Daed getting remarried. It creates tension in the family and Korey leaves to go to Ohio. After working there for a year, Korey comes back home and it is anything but easy for him. His family and friends want him to find his significant other so he can be as happy as they are, but Korey isn’t interested in that.

Amish fiction seems to be getting more diverse and BREAKING NEW GROUND proves that fact. Korey has been spending much time with Savannah, who also has no desire to settle down. All she cares about is protecting her younger brother from bullies. Savannah and Korey come up with a plan to pretend to court so everyone will leave them alone. Well, you know how that is going to work right? Korey starts to change. He grows, mentally and spiritually, and I am really happy because I did not like the old Korey. Korey and Savannah are both struggling, but they are both there for each other and that made my heart happy.

Amy Clipston has created a wonderful series filled with beautiful families and characters. Her descriptions of each setting had me feeling as if I were right there in the Bontrager kitchen giggling with all of these amazing people. BREAKING NEW GROUND was a quick read for me because I had a hard time putting it down once I started. I’m excited to continue this series. There will be another book in this series next winter and I can’t wait. I finished this wonderful story with tears in my eyes and a huge lump in my throat! That’s all I’m saying!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Zondervan through Edelweiss. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Although I received a complimentary review copy through NetGalley, I ended up deciding to purchase the audio version because I have loved each book in this series and was excited to listen to this one. I am so glad that I did! I really enjoyed both the story and the narration.

Korey was such a frustrating character in the first two books in the series. He had some real anger issues and was very immature. It was clear that his behavior stemmed from emotional distress related to his mother’s death, as well as jealousy of his older brother. He definitely did not handle himself well.

I did wonder if I would be able to care about Korey as a main character as much as I had for the other Bontrager men in the first two novels. I am happy to report that the author did a wonderful job of redeeming this young man! I liked that his change in attitude was gradual, which made it very believable. He still battled some anger, resentment, and hurt toward Tyler and Tyler’s wife, Michelle, when he first returned. I found that extremely realistic. I loved watching Korey grow and work at asking for forgiveness and granting it, as well. His change in attitude as the story progressed was refreshing.

Savannah was a sweet character who definitely took on more responsibility for her brother than she ever needed to. I understood why she did this, however, her stubbornness almost cost her everything! It was great to see what a good friend Korey was to both Savannah and her brother, Toby. I loved seeing Savannah and Korey falling for each other. And this story has such a wonderful epilogue! It left me smiling and eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary ebook copy, however, I purchased the audio book format for myself. All opinions are my own.

This review will post on my blog on 4/27/23.

while it didn't hurt that fake relationships are one of my favorite romance tropes, I knew right away that this was going to be my favorite of the series.

I was so very pleased to find Korey not only contrite (he's been a complete jerk during the series so far, especially to his stepmother, who is more patient than I would be with someone half his age) but genuinely apologetic to everyone he has hurt.

But this about more than a prodigal son returning to his family, as Clipston pairs Korey's journey with Savannah's. The two of them become best friends and fall in love, but her family situation is as troubled as his, with a parallel neither one of them can see coming that threatens to separate them just when they are ready to admit their true feelings to each other.

Definitely one of the best Clipston novels yet.

Wonderful and Heartwarming

Korey Bontrager has come a long way from the person he was in the past. He knows God has brought him back home, but moving forward is going to take a lot of work. However, moving forward becomes a little less challenging and a lot more interesting when Savannah Zook suggests they fake date. That's when things take a turn for them in ways they never thought possible.

I truly did not like the old Korey, but the new Korey touched my heart in a special way. I could feel his frustrations and struggles as he worked at moving forward from his past and moving toward making things right. His situation struck a cord with how realistic and true to life it is. It shows how hard life is when you mess up and have to own up to your mistakes in order to make things right, especially when it involves moving from blame shifting, to taking responsibility, to asking for forgiveness. As Korey worked through all of that, his faith in God, his determination and his friendship with Savannah kept him moving forward. The same can also be said for Savannah. Her situation was different from Korey's, but she too had struggles and things to work through. Just as with Korey, their friendship, her determination and her faith in God helped her move forward as well.

I loved Korey and Savannah's story. It was truly a joy to see how their "fake" relationship developed and grew. I also loved the how the themes of faith and family were woven into the story in such a way that added a very special touch to their story and to that of the other characters as well. This made for a wonderful and heartwarming story that I did not want to see end and one that I highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and strictly my own.

4.5 stars, rounded up

I think the Amish Legacy series has been my favorite by Amy Clipston. My heart just goes out to the family and seeing them come together again. In my review of the second book, i mentioned that I didn’t like Korey at all and was hoping my opinion of him would improve if he got his own book. Well, it did. I loved Korey. He really grew and changed a lot. As the brother who had the most growing up to do, he had the furthest to go, but it was so satisfying to see him mature. The romance was so sweet. I’m not sure I’ve read an Amish fake dating story, but they really opened up to each other and it was lovely to see. I have loved the youngest brother Jayden since the first book, so I’m hoping he gets his own love story as well.

You can't let that fear hold you back from living the life God has given you.

I have really enjoyed reading this series and it was wonderful to be reminded of the characters of the past two books. Korey Bontrager had left his family after the hurt of his brother's betrayal. Tyler his brother had fallen in love with the girl Korey had hoped to marry. Even though Korey had treated her badly, his competitive feelings for his older brother was deep rooted. His father had also remarried, and it was painful for him to see his father replace his wife.

Coming back home and facing his family again was difficult. His emotions were all over the place. However, the wisdom of an older man had sent him back home. How do you even start the healing process and begin fresh. Savannah Zook fits that bill. Savannah and Korey had grown up together but really did not know each other well. Korey had always looked up to Savannah in the way she stood up for her younger brother and said exactly what she meant. Savannah had her own family problems. Her mother died while giving birth to her younger brother (5 years apart) and her father bailed on his family, never to be heard from again. Savannah and her brother Toby were taken in by her mother's brother but Savannah put on her shoulders Toby's well being. Toby struggled with learning and others had bullied him at school.

Together Savannah & Korey came up with an agreeable plan to put off family and friends from forcing them into dating. They both were not in a good place to date so they became good friends. This was a sweet somewhat predictable romance that broke down walls of mistrust, rejection, and facing the truth of sharing your burdens. Sometimes the first step in forgiveness is seeing yourself in God's eye. Our pain can make us blind to what is really at the root of relational problems. Again, I really enjoyed getting to know these characters.

A special thank you to Zondervan and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Description; i.e., the Blurb
Korey was, well, just plain mad when his father married again and had no problem letting his kind stepmother know it. Adding to his unhappiness, his other brother was distancing himself to the point of estrangement. So off Korey goes to Ohio for 14 months. Now he has returned home after some growing up only to discover that life has moved on without him. Friends are married and everyone seems to think he should get married too.

Savannah Zook is the only maedel that he feels comfortable with. She isn’t interested in acquiring a husband; her #1 priority is protecting her bullied brother. But both are feeling the pressure — MARRIAGE. So they come up with a plan — pretend to date each other. Emphasis on pretend. So how does their plan work out?

My belated review …
I’m still in catchup mode on NetGalley reviews having read this in April. You can beat me with a wet noodle later.

Can’t you see it? These two young people coming up with the perfect plan to get parents and friends off their backs about getting married. You learn quickly why his older brother was torqued at Korey. Or was it the other way around?

Unless it was changed in the final version, Chapter One is overloaded with the introduction of characters. And it’s a long chapter.

In Chapter 10, I had about had it with “poor” Korey and his continued immaturity. To the point I marked a note to deduct as much as 2 stars. And there are 19 chapters to go. I understood why Korey was upset re his older brother but feel it wasn’t enough of a reason to make him act the way he continues to. I wished there had been another element to the situation. Otherwise, for me, Korey comes off as a whiner. And I really have a problem with whiners — in books and in real life.

I wonder if everything was just too drawn out … Had I not had to read for (it felt) the umpteenth time about Korey and why he left for Ohio … maybe I would have a higher rating.

Now, I’m in the minority as far as ratings go. Most are four and five stars. But for this reader, it was a three (3) star. I did not know until after I finished that it was the third in a series. The book can be read standalone.

Turns out I had read books 1 (5 stars) and 2 (3 stars). I noted in the latter review that I seem to have a love/hate relationship with Amy Clipston Amish books. And that remains true. I can’t recommend this one due to Korey’s character but others love it. I won’t be continuing the series.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of Breaking New Ground via NetGalley from the publisher, Zondervan Fiction, Zondervan. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This is the last book in An Amish Legacy series. Book #3 focuses on Kory Bontrager whom I’ve had a love hate relationship with. I enjoyed reading Kory’s growth and redemption with the support of Savannah Zook.

The ending was amazing, especially with a finale wrap into Crystal from book #1 and Tyler and Michell from book #2.

BREAKING NEW GROUND by Amy Clipston is the delightful and heart-tugging story of Korey Bontrager and Savannah Zook. Helping each other they work through their past mistakes and present responsibilities while wonder if there might be a happily ever after out there.

Korey loved his mother dearly. When his dad started to date Crystal and then marrying her so shortly after her death, bringing Crystal in to take over his mother’s home, he felt like his dad was replacing his mother. He had always argued or bucked heads with Tyler, his older brother, but it wasn’t until Tyler started dating the girl he had once thought would be his bride so shortly after they had mutually decided to just be friends, that the tension became more than Korey could take. He felt like his brother had crossed the line of respect. Between Crystal coming into his mom’s home and Tyler’s actions, it was more than he could take causing him to leave his home town. He went live and work with his cousin in Ohio. After 14 months and at the urging of an elder friend and feeling it was God’s calling, he knew he had to return home, try to rectify his relationship with his brother and to accept his dad’s decisions. He also knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

Savannah’s mom died giving birth her brother Toby. She was only five when her dad disappeared after dropping them both off at her uncle and aunt’s. She felt it was her job to protect Toby, care for him just as if she was his mom from the very beginning even though she was a child herself. Savannah had dedicated her life to Toby’s happiness and well-being. That often meant defending him from bullies that harassed and embarrassed him a lot at school due to his difficulties in math and reading. So much so, that now as an adult, Toby considered himself dumb, with no friends and stuck in a job he didn’t enjoy. Savannah is determined to see Toby happy willing to put dating or having a family of her own off the radar until she knows he’s happy.

Savannah refused to listen to the town gossip about Korey. She just knows that he’s shown kindness to her brother. When the man her friends had set her up with leaves her stranded after a social, Savannah started the long walk home. It was Korey who saw her and insisted on taking her home. Through their few brief conversations in the past and those on the way home, Savannah concocted the idea of them becoming a pretend couple as a way to ward off uninvited matchmaking. After a bit of consideration and question asking, Korey agrees to become her “pretend” boyfriend. He asked her father for permission to see her when he deliveries her back safely home.

With pray and Savannah’s ability to shine light on a subject, will Korey be able to mend the relationship with his family and feel like he belongs both at home and in his community? Can he release his hurt and anger and do God’s will? Can they fool folks into thinking they are a “real” couple? After seeing many changes in Toby, including him finding joy in a job he loves, can Savannah ever feel like her job is done? Will the long conversations and enjoying being in each other’s company awaken feeling neither of them thought was possible? With fear of ruining a friendship have them delaying speaking up until it’s too late? What will happen when an unexpected visitor shows up?

BREAKING NEW GROUND is an exceptional story of family, commitment, a promise of tomorrow, prayerfully following God’s lead, forgiveness and sweet romance. Amy Clipston tells us this fabulous well-written story with a thread of faith that will have you feeling many of your emotions as you read each riveting chapter ending with a big sigh of happiness. In my opinion, Korey and Savannah’s story is a must read and definitely gets my FIVE STARS.

Although I received an ARC, I was not asked or requested to write a review. All opinions are completely my own.

I'm going to start out by saying, after reading the first two books in Amy Clipston's 'Amish Legacy' series, I did NOT like middle son, Korey Bontrager. He came across as just plain disagreeable. Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to reading his story, but Clipston is in the business of redemption both in her character's personal lives, and in their spiritual lives, and she definitely turned Korey around.

When his father remarried, then his older brother 'stole' his girlfriend and married her, Korey Bontrager left his home in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania to work in a factory in Ohio. Yes, there was some door-slamming and stomping off involved, and he gave every indication that he was a champion grudge-holder. Fast-forward a little over a year, and Korey has returned home to make things right with his family. Influenced by an elderly Amishman in Ohio, he has realized that his family is important to him, and that the rift in the family is all his doing. Can he dial back his emotions enough to see everything from another viewpoint?

While Savannah Zook's friends are all pairing off, she is actively avoiding dating. She has seen herself as her brother's main caregiver since she was 5 years old and he was an infant, when their mother died in childbirth, and their father abandoned them. Even though she's now 25 and he's 20, she still feels responsible for his happiness. When her friends start setting her up on blind dates, she can't convince them she's not interested, so she cooks up a scheme with Korey to fake date each other. His family believes that a relationship will cement his staying in the community, and her friends won't stop the blind date nonsense unless she's off the market.

As Korey and Savannah spend time with each other, they discover a deep friendship. As they confide their deepest hurts, and their greatest joys, they also find out that fake dating can lead to not so fake feelings. Can they find a way out of their pretend courtship, to a place where they can share their real feelings with each other?

This was the perfect way to tell Korey's story. Yes, he turns around, but it's not immediate, which would not have looked genuine, knowing his personality. I worked with a teacher once who said that there is a "miracle of maturity' that happens sometime between the 8th and 9th grade years, and I felt like Korey had his maturity miracle hit while he was in Ohio. He learned to bite his tongue and not spout off when his temper flared. He learned to think before he spoke, and to walk away before he said words he couldn't take back. He still had he emotional highs and lows, but he found a friend he could talk things out with when he found Savannah. I loved the way they helped each other.

All in all, this was a wonderful read that - once I started it - I couldn't put it down. Readers who love Amish romance should pick up Breaking New Ground. While it can be read as a stand-alone story, it is far more satisfying to read it in sequence with the first two books. Korey's transformation is far more dramatic if you first see what he was like in the first two books. I definitely recommend!

Breaking New Ground by Amy Clipston has Korey Bontrager returning home to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I am glad that Korey is returning home and it seems his time away has matured him. Korey’s attitude toward his stepmother has also changed. He is still struggling with how he feels toward his brother, Tyler who is now married to Korey’s former girlfriend. Korey needs to find a way to heal the rift between him and his brother. He needs to find a way to forgive. Savannah Zook is the only one of her girlfriend’s who does not have a boyfriend. Her friends are determined to find Savannah a beau. Korey is having a similar problem. His family believes it is time for him to start dating. Savannah and Korey can help each other by having a pretend relationship. Breaking New Ground is a heartfelt tale. I enjoyed getting to know Savannah and her family. I admit that I was not a fan of Korey in the earlier books. I was happy to see that he is not the same angry, bitter fellow who departed for Ohio. I like the mature Korey. He still has some things to work out, but we are all works in progress. I can understand Korey’s struggle with forgiveness. It can be hard to forgive someone who has wronged you especially when it is a family member. Savannah finds herself going through an emotional time when someone from her past returns. She must make a tough decision. Savannah also finds herself grappling with forgiveness. She knows that she is supposed to forgive, but Savannah anger are getting in the way. I like that we get to catch up with the characters from Foundation of Love and Building a Future. There is some predictability to the story as well as repetitive details. However, those aspects are overshadowed by great characters, the touching moments, the humor, the close friendships, and the loving family members. I like how the author worked the title into the story. My favorite line from Breaking New Ground is, “We’re all different. I’m different from mei bruders, but God gives us all our own gifts.” I am looking forward to Jayden’s story in The Heart’s Shelter. It will be interesting to see who ends up being Jayden’s romantic partner. I find Jayden to be a mature and insightful young man. Breaking New Ground is a poignant tale that will tug at your heartstrings (keep the box of tissues nearby). While Breaking New Ground can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the series in order. It will allow you to get to know the characters along with their struggles and the community. Breaking New Ground is an uplifting tale with a returning brother, matchmaking chums, finding a friend, a dissatisfied sibling, an uninvited visitor, a difficult decision, and finding forgiveness.

Breaking New Ground by Amy Clipston, book three in An Amish Legacy series, is a story with a fake relationship, understanding, forgiveness, friendship, tolerance and lasting true love somewhere in all of this. Influenced by an elderly Amish man in Ohio, he has realized that his family is important to him, and that the rift in the family is all his doing. Hopefully he can dial back his emotions enough to see everything from another viewpoint.

Savannah Zook's friends are all pairing off, she is actively avoiding dating. She has seen herself as her brother's main caregiver since she was five years old and he was an infant, after their mother died in childbirth, and their father abandoned them shortly afterward. Even though it’s twenty years later, she still feels responsible for his happiness. When her friends start setting her up on blind dates, she can't convince them she's not interested. Witnessing Korey befriending her brother has her re-examines the situation and her view of Korey. After a Sunday picnic/sing alone Korey ends up bringing Savannah home. While discussing their situations, with his family believing that a relationship will help him wanting to stay in the community and her friends won't stop the blind date nonsense unless she's off the market, Savannah suggests that they fake date each other. As Korey and Savannah spend time with each other, they become friends and start having real feelings for each other. However, her family situation is as troubled as his, with a similarity neither one of them can see coming that threatens to separate them just when they are ready to admit their true feelings to each other. As Korey and Savannah struggle to work through this unexpected situation, it will take their friendship, determination and faith in G-d before either one will be able to move forward, toward a future together.

Ms Clipston wrote an endearing and heartwarming story weaving the themes of faith, forgiveness, and family that added a very special touch to their story and to that of the other characters as well. I highly recommend Breaking New Ground to other readers.

Amy Clipston is truly one of the queens of Amish fiction, and I couldn't wait to dive into this one. I've been looking forward to another visit with the Bontrager family of Lancaster County, and especially looking forward to Korey finally getting his own story. It was going to take a pretty amazing story to redeem this prodigal son in the reader's eyes, and I'm happy to say that the author managed to deliver exactly that.

Fake dating is one of my all time favorite romance tropes, and I've never had the pleasure of reading an Amish fiction title that's employed this before. When Korey returns home, he's still struggling with the familial troubles that sent him running in the first place, and he's tired of his family and friends trying to push him into dating when he's not ready to chance his heart. Savannah Zook is tired of her friends trying to set her up on blind dates, when all she wants is to be able to watch out for her younger brother. When Korey and Savannah become friends, she proposes they pretend to date to get their friends and families off their backs. Only, neither of them expected the feelings to become real, and both have hurts and insecurities they need to deal with before being able to move forward into their own happily ever after.

Once again, Amy Clipston has delivered a heartwarming, wonderful romance that tugs at the heartstrings and brings tears to the eyes. These characters have truly come to feel like old friends, and I'm so thankful that readers finally got to see another side of Korey, and what was his reason for his actions in the previous titles. The Bontragers truly have come together as a family, and I can't wait to read Jayden's story when it releases next year!

Final Rating: 5/5.

Thanks so much to Zondervan for allowing me to advance read and review this one!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher (Zondervan) via NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and this is my honest review.

Korey Bontrager knows that he's been immature. He knows that he has been unkind. When his widowed father remarried, Korey was very unwelcoming to his kindhearted stepmother. Then, he became estranged from his older brother. But, in his fourteen months living away from his family in Ohio, Korey has gained some perspective and he wants to reconcile with his family. God calls him back to Pennsylvania to begin paving the way for Korey to do just that, but it turns out to not be as easy as Korey was hoping it would be. He feels like his family has moved on without him. And, he's finding that both his family and his friends are all wanting to see him happily settled down with a family of his own. Savannah Zook has always been protective of her younger brother, who has often found himself being bullied. She's helped her aunt and uncle raise him since they were small and really has no interest in dating or starting a family of her own at this point, no matter how much her friends want her to. She and Korey come up with the idea to pretend to date to get everyone off of their backs. But, the more time they spend together, the more they begin to fall for each other. Could a real relationship be possible for them?

I'll admit that Korey was not my favorite of the Bontrager brothers in the first couple of books. He was sullen and kind of mean. But, we all need a second chance, and I really enjoyed reading Korey's second chance. I love how much he's grown as a person and how he really lets himself be vulnerable to bond with his stepmother and to repair his relationship with the rest of his family. I enjoyed how Korey's family and friends rallied around him and really accepted him back. It was wonderful getting to visit with my favorite characters from the previous books and getting to know new people in Savannah and her family. I really think this is my favorite series by Amy Clipston and I'm looking forward to reading Tyler's chance at love.

Korey Bontrager had left his home after his girlfriend of many years broke up with him. She then turned around and started dating his older brother who he had be in competition with his whole life. He felt he could no longer be part of the family and with his dad remarrying after his mother died he no longer felt wanted by his family.
After a year away he decided to return to his home and see about building the bridges to make amends and start over with his family. Will he be successful in doing this?
Savannah Zook has lived with her aunt and uncle's family since she was five years old and her brother was less than a year. Her life was turned upside down when her mother died having her brother and her father abandoned them. She feels that her life has been set out for her as she works in the grocery store that the family owns and is there to take care of her brother. Toby, her brother has learning disabilities and has always been picked on by his classmates in the community. He has never really developed a strong friendship with anyone and he also works in the store.
In a chance meeting Korey has to go to the store and pick up some items for his step-mother and runs into Toby. They start a conversation and find that they have several things in common and he is able to get Toby to open up.
In the meantime, Savannah's friends have been trying to set her up with different boys so that she can date like they do and eventually find a husband. She wants no part of this as stated she feels her life has been set out for her already. So when she meets up with Korey after a church youth group meeting, she and he come up with a scheme to get everyone off their backs. But, like so many things that start off as one thing it develops into something quite different.
An adorable story that will melt you heart and make you believe that GOD is in control of our lives and when he sets out to make something happen it does even when it is not what you expected at all.....

If you enjoyed Building a Future by Amy Cliptson, you would want to read her latest in Amy Clipston's Amish Legacy Series, Breaking New Ground.

This book was such an excellent April read, as it takes place in April and March. Breaking New Ground is Amy's third book in her Amish Legacy Series. If you are looking for a warm, enjoyable, and simple Amish story, Amy's novels have everything a reader of this interest would enjoy. Amy creates such wonderful characters for each of her stories, and in this latest novel, Amy continues the story and focuses on Korey Bontrager from Building a Future. Korey was not well-liked from Building a Future from being immature to his step-mom and not quite mature for a girlfriend just yet as he had a lot of wrinkles he first needed to iron out in his own life. In Breaking New Ground, Amy skillfully brings Korey back home with a new mindset that brings a fresh start and a path forward. In this story, we are also introduced to Savannah Zook and her brother Toby. These two new characters have a story of their own that, like Korey, also has loss, hurt, and betrayal. The plot of this story is very well-written, and reading how these three characters come together makes this an even more enjoyable read. Amy always seems to weave in a thread of wisdom in her stories, and this one seemed to me to be about forgiveness and softening the heart. I would be so excited to read about the youngest brother Jayden. He seems like the wisest of all the brothers and a peacekeeper. If you've ever read any of Amy's previous Amish stories, you'll likely enjoy this one. Amy has found a winning formula as this story shares many of the same elements as her previous novels, and you'll dive into the lives of the Bontrager family.

What I read: Breaking New Ground by Amy Clipston

Why I picked it up: I’ve been enjoying Amy’s work recently and was excited to see this newest in the series on NetGalley – so I requested it and promptly read the previous two the past two days so I could enjoy this one today. received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

How I read it: On eGalley from NetGalley today.

What it’s about: We finally get Korey’s story – and he’s back from Ohio with a partially mended heart, but there’s still a lot of work to do. Savannah notices him but all of her friends are only noticing that she’s the only one without a boyfriend … so she devises a plan for them to fake date in order to get everyone off their backs. The only thing she didn’t plan for (and neither did Korey) was for them to become close as friend, confidants, and future family.

What I liked: I really liked the progression of Korey’s maturity throughout this book. We’d seen him in the previous two being shortsighted and immature and hotheaded. He really grows in this book.

What I disliked: The conflict at the end felt like a giant surprise and was really rushed. I also kept getting upset with Savannah’s notion that she had to be the one to take care of her brother – who it seems has a learning disability. Why has no one helped him with that?

Genre: Amish, chaste love story, fathers.

Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and absolutely – but you need the previous two to really understand Korey – this doesn’t make sense without his backstory. It releases on April 11th.

Breaking New Ground is my favourite book so far in this series. Korey has been struggling since this first book about the change that has happened in his life, first, his mother dying, and then his older brother eventually marrying the woman that he previously dated. He felt that there was a competition between him and his older brother, Tyler and he had a hard time. Korey has recently returned from Ohio, and he is having a hard time re-integrating into his life in Bird-in-Hand, everyone's solution is to start dating someone, and he isn't ready to do that.

Savannah is determined to be the mother to her brother Toby after her mother has died and her father simply took off years earlier. While all her friends are dating and think she should too! She isn't interested and is determined to bring Toby to a youth gathering. It isn't until circumstances bring Savannah and Korey together a few times and they realize that they like hanging out together that they decide to 'fake date' to keep everyone happy.

It turns out that Savannah and him are well suited for each other, and they both realize that they love one another but Savannah's wayward father shows up before Korey can share his true feelings with Savannah, and that may change everything for them. I liked Breaking New Ground, it shows Korey in a different light than the first two, namely his POV and that helped me to see his side of things. Though I would read the first two books in this series you can read this as a stand-alone.

4.5 stars

In this third book in the series, we catch up with Korey Bontrager after the events of book two, which devastated him and his life. He's returned to PA and his family with a changed attitude. Honestly, I would have liked to see more of how that went down - because it was a pretty big shift! But I was glad for it. Poor kid really did need an attitude adjustment.

Savannah was a new character, I think. I don't recall hearing about her in other books, but she became a perfect match for Korey. Stubborn just like him, speaks her mind, soaked in responsibility... The way they set up their fake relationship flowed easily, but you just know it'll turn real.

Oooohhh so good!! I've had a rough 2 months of reading and this one just hit the spot. I knew it would, so I sat on it for a bit, and I just loved it.

It was so nice to see what these characters were up to. I've come to love the Bontrager family and really this whole fictional Amish community. It's such a positive, bright, uplifting series, so if you need something that won't add to the negativity and the craziness of the world, this is a good one to check out.

Some of the writing style is a little repetitive still. "Later that evening" is in like 10 chapters, etc. But even though it's low drama, it's still packed with the feels. I really enjoyed it and hope you do too. Especially for all the surprises and family updates! :)

This is the third book in a series about a father and his three grown Amish sons, but it could be read as a standalone. Writing the family dynamic is often a strength of Clipston and I've enjoyed the whole mult-book series based on them. Thankfully, this book made Korey so much more sympathetic and nuanced soul whereas in the other books, he was kind of portrayed as a jerk and the foil to his brother Tyler. But I fell in love with this other side of Korey- a new more mature man who has such a kind heart and just needed to find his place in his community and family. Savannah, on the other hand, some parts I felt her also to be a sympathetic, relatable character, others, just grated. She was fiery in her overprotectiveness of her brother, but it also seemed over the top and somewhat unrealistic for a 25 year old. Is she a good match for the new Korey? I did love the build up of the romance, the drama towards the end was an interesting conflict to overcome. As always the resolution is sweet, heartfelt and comforting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a final story based on Jayden, because out of all of the brothers, he is the most likeable. Can't wait for Clipston to create his perfect match.
Thank you to #NetGalleyand Zondervan Fiction for the Arc. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Welcome back to Lancaster, Pennsylvania! Amy Clipston does an amazing job of transporting you back to this small town in the third novel in The Amish Legacy Series. This book had me turning the pages so fast to see what would happen. I suggest reading the first two books not only because they are amazing, but this story will make more sense if you do.
“Breaking New Ground” is Korey’s story. He’s the Amish bad boy we love to hate, because we know that under all that gruff and grumpiness is a man with a good heart. Korey was horrible to his father Duane, stepmother Crystal, older brother Tyler and ex-girlfriend Michelle (who is now Tyler’s wife). He befriends Savannah Zook who feels duty bound to care for her younger brother.
This book is more than just a romance novel. It’s also a “love” story between a brother and sister. Savannah’s devotion to her brother is honorable. Korey shows us that no matter what, family comes first. Many thanks to the author and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of the book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

READ THIS BOOK IF YOU
Love a good redemption story
Savor a slow burn
Enjoy a sweet romance
Appreciate a good series

Korey Bontrager has just returned to his family home in Pennsylvania from almost two years in Ohio. He has been estranged from his family after one of his two brothers married his ex-girlfriend. This was soon after his father had remarried two years after his mother died. Korey was not ready to see another woman take his mother's place, and it burned him to see his brother with his former girlfriend. Korey has come home to try to reunite in peace with his family.

Savannah Zook's main focus is her brother Toby. He is younger, socially inept and has difficulty with reading and mathematics. She is so intent on looking after him that she doesn't spend much time getting to know the young men who attend some of their socials. As a result, as her friends are pairing up, Savannah is left sitting on the sidelines and feeling uncomfortable. Korey and Savannah get to know each other, and make a plan to be each other's plus-one to take the attention off of them as unpaired adults.

While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone. I didn't realize it was part of a series until after I finished it. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher Zondervan Fiction via NetGalley. It was my pleasure to voluntarily read and review this book.

A charming fake-relationship romance set in the heart of Amish country.

Korey Bontrager returns home knowing what he is coming home to and hoping to mend bridges between himself and his family. His family welcomes him with open arms, but it doesn't mean that returning home isn't a little awkward seeing his brother and former girlfriend married.

Savannah doesn't want to jump into a relationship just because her friends are dating now, but their nagging is getting hard to ignore. So she and Korey decide to fake a relationship to get everyone to leave their love lives alone.

Korey and Savannah are both likable characters from the start and I could easily see how they brought out the best in each other. Korey has come a long way in accepting how things are now, and I liked seeing his more mature side as well as his friendship with Toby. Savannah is a caring sister, and a supportive friend.

This was a fun fast paced read with compelling characters and a sweet romance. A very enjoyable read with compelling characters, strong faith, and good character growth. Definitely recommend!

I'm so happy that Korey finally gets his own story!
Oh My Goodness !
Clipston has done an amazing job with this book!
I loved "watching " Korey grow into himself. I found myself rooting for him. You see, at 1st I didn't like him because I thought he was too self centered. But such really wasn't the case as the 1st 2 books seemed to suggest. Really Korey was just trying to come to terms with all of the changes that were happening in his life along with everyone else.
Changes aren't easy for some and in that I can relate to Korey for sure!.
Some handle grief differently.
My favorite part was the banter/fake girlfriend/boyfriend scenes. Some of them made me laugh out loud
I very much enjoyed the faith filled themes scattered throughout this story too. Those were my 2nd favorite thing.
I was pleased and surprised with the ending of this wonderful story. I loved every minute of it.
I didn't want it to end but I will be looking forward to seeing what she writes next!
Maybe they'll have their own family lol!
That would definitely be interesting!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Many thanks to Zondervan Fiction for allowing me to read an advance copy of Breaking New Ground by Amy Clipston that will be published April 11, 2023. This is book three in Amy’s Sweet, inspirational Amish romance following Book 1: Foundation of Love and Book 2: Building a Future.
Again, Amy Clipston has taken us to the community of Lancaster County just as Korey Bontrager returns to his community after being away for fourteen months. He had run to Ohio after a falling out with his older brother. He returns because he feels God wants him to return and make amends with his family and his community.
Because both families insist it is time for each of them to marry and neither are interested, Korey and Savannah Zook enter into an agreement that they will pretend to be courting just to keep inquiries from family and friends at bay.
Characters in this story are realistic and the plot is well developed and easy to follow. You really will not want to put it down.
I am pleased to give this book 5-stars and suggest you preorder your copy today. All opinions are my own, and was not required to give a positive review.

This book is the third in An Amish Legacy Noval. Korey Bontrager, the middle son who left town in the last book. He was a destructive mess, he didn't like his fathers new wife, short tempered, and didn't have what it took to run his own roofing crew in his fathers business and still mad that his brother married his girl. Now he is back with a calmer, clearer direction and wants to make a mends. He still needs a lot work on himself and isn't ready to settle down like everyone else wants him to be. He befriends Savannah Zook, a outspoken maidel who is also feeling the pressures of her family. They decide to pretend they are courting but each find themselves feeling something more. Savannah states she must always be there for her brother, whom she practically raised. Korey feels after the heartbreak of his last one he won't ever settle down. Very engaging book with lots of story lines, you can almost see another book in the future. I was given an advanced copy through the publisher for review, which is based solely on my opinion.
