Set to Expire

Rate this book
For the last decade, every eighteen-year-old’s expiration date has been determined by Ex-Inc, the mysterious corporation that wields unprecedented control over society. When Emmy Slate learns that she’s set to expire before her thirtieth birthday, her dreams for the future—college, a career, a family, even getting a dog—are shattered.

A dozen years later, Emmy spends her days attending group counseling, hiking in Portland’s Forest Park, and preparing to check into the Ex-Inc facility where she will wait out her expiration date. Though she’s resigned to her fate, a harrowing encounter and unlikely friendship spark inside of her something she hasn’t felt in years—the will to survive.

Ex-Inc wrote off Emmy as a bad bet years ago. Can she prove them wrong? And uncover Ex-Inc’s greatest secret in the process?

The first book of The Expired Trilogy, Set to Expire takes place in a reality not so different from our own. At once heartbreaking and humorous, it’s the story of a resilient young woman finding love, strength, and even hope in the face of insurmountable odds.

I’m terrible at writing reviews so I almost never leave them. But this book deserves a review. I’ve been in a book slump for a little while now, and I picked this book up expecting the same slump. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. From the first couple pages Cindy had her hooks in me. This book is incredible and part of a trilogy. I can’t wait to read the next book

If you could find out the date you would die, would you want to know or be oblivious? That’s a question I asked family and friends and internet strangers. In this book when you turn 18 you find out your D.O.E (date of expiration) Emmy finds out her expiration date is an early one, before she turns 30. Her world is shattered, and everything she wanted to do is no longer possible. Ex-inc is a mysterious corporation that has power over society. Follow Emmy along on her journey to her date of death.

This was an interesting one! Set in the near future when everyone is given the date of their death on their 18th birthday, the story follows a young lady who learns she is due to expire at age 29. Without giving spoilers, I can't really say too much more.

But it's a wild ride of sinister conspiracy theories (I promise, it's not crazy!) and I can't wait for the next book in the trilogy!

Thank you to Goodreads and the publisher for this ARC! All thoughts are my own and the fact that it was free does not alter my opinion

This book deserves a review, just I don't know what to write not to spoil anything. The fun of this book is in big part the wild ride - not knowing where it will take you next. The premise is a very interesting one and it keeps you hooked. It's entertaining, thought-provoking, disturbing and even slightly creepy at times. I can't wait for the sequel now!

Such a wow of a book.

How would you live your life if you knew when you were gonna die? A question as old as time.

How would you be allowed to live you life if you knew when you were going to die is a whole new question this book brings to readers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Very thought provoking, bringing up many ethical questions indeed.

Super thanks to Amazon Unlimited for this popping into my suggested reads. Can't wait to read a sequel or three! So much to explore with this concept.

Solidly 4.5 stars.

A page turner

I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy. The story of people knowing their expiration dates is fascinating and thought provoking. Emmy’s journey was a mystery with twists and turns that kept me wanting to turn the page to learn more. The author thought out every detail making it easy to get immersed alongside Emmy and the many likeable characters in this strange world. A world that is very believable.

so worth the read!

This book piqued my interest because it reminded me of Logan’s Run, an old movie where people also know their death dates and are expected to submit to them. However, that is the only similarity, this book explored completely different concepts and the story line is nothing like that movie. It’s super modern, engaging, and I could see this picked up as a movie some day. I couldn’t put it down!

Great Start

Intriguing premise and interesting characters make this a very great start to a trilogy I'm excited to read. It does remind me a bit of Logan's Run, but it's much better. This book has deception, humor, suspicion and characters that come together as an interesting family. Can they all be trusted? I don't know but am looking forward to finding out and learning more about the company!

3.5 stars. I received a copy of this ebook in a Goodreads giveaway. Overall, I enjoyed this story. I felt like there was a really big tone shift in part three and it dragged a little in the middle, but it came back around in the and I had a good time.
