New York Times bestselling author Fiona Davis transports us back to 1950s Manhattan and the glamorous Radio City Music Hall. . . .

New York City, 1956: Nineteen-year-old Marion is over the moon to have been selected to be one of the Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall’s glamorous precision-dancing troupe. It’s an honor to perform in the world’s most spectacular theater, an art deco masterpiece. But with four shows a day as well as grueling rehearsals, not to mention exacting standards of perfection to live up to, Marion quickly realizes that the life of a Rockette has both extraordinary highs and devastating lows.

Then one night a bomb explodes in the theater. It’s only the latest in a string of explosions around the city orchestrated by a person the press has nicknamed the "Big Apple Bomber." They have been terrorizing the citizens of New York for sixteen years by planting bombs in popular, crowded spaces. With the public in an uproar over the lack of any real leads after a yearslong manhunt, the police, at Marion’s urging, turn in desperation to a radical new technique: psychological profiling.

As Marion finds herself pulled deeper into the investigation, she realizes that as much as she’s been training herself to blend in—performing in perfect unison with all the other identical Rockettes—if she hopes to catch the bomber, she’ll need to stand out and take a terrifying risk. But she may be forced to sacrifice everything she’s worked for, as well as the people she loves the most.

While Marion is thrilled to join the famed Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall as a dancer in 1956, there are more lows than she expected. When a serial bomber strikes the theater, she feels compelled to search out the bomber herself. But will it be at the risk of everything she's worked for? This will keep you on your toes!

Wow! Fiona Davis packs a spectacular punch with her historical novel, The Spectacular. It is superbly narrated by Rachel L. Jacobs and Kimberly Farr.

Marion, a nineteen year old woman, faces her future with grit, determination, and dreams. Her father and her boyfriend want her to pursue a respectable career for women in the 1950s: secretary, nurse, or teacher. Marion loves to dance and auditions for the Rockettes and makes it.

I loved so many things about this book:
* The nonfiction elements: there was a Mad Bomber in NYC who detonated over 30 bombs during a 16 year period. He set them off in Radio City Music Hall, public libraries, Grand Central Station, Port Authority, phone booths, the subway, and other locations. In the book, he's referred to as the Big Apple Bomber.
* Another nonfiction element: Psychological profiling was used to help catch the Mad Bomber.
* Lots of family and relationship dynamics, including a very controlling, domineering father.
* The story arc, character development, and details about Rockettes are fabulous.
* Marion is a spunky, determined young woman who wants a dancing career regardless of what her father and boyfriend say and do.
* I learned a lot!

The story was created after a Rockette who was in her 80s reached out to Fiona Davis. She shared many details about being a Rockette in the 1950s. The Rockette's performed four shows a day which meant 600 kicks a day. They worked three to four weeks straight before getting a day off. The Rockette's performed shows between movies. If there was a western movie, they learned new dances and performed in cowgirl costumes.

At the end of the audiobook, Fiona Davis mentioned that she was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2020.

Highly recommend!

At a time when women were supposed to be living either with their families or husband and working as a nurse, secretary, or teacher, nineteen-year-old Marion Brooks is willing to risk her father’s wrath by dancing as a Rockette.

In the 50s, Radio City was a movie house and the Rockettes, its dazzling precision dance troupe, performed four times a day in a stage show that was based on the movie’s theme.

The book’s title The Spectacular comes from the iconic holiday show, still captivating audiences at Christmastime today.

Although Marion’s father refers to her as a “chorus girl,” make no mistake, the life of a Rockette is a grueling one — two rehearsals and four-shows-a-day with no days off for three weeks at a time.

Fiona Davis treats us to an intimate look at the interior of the historic Manhattan landmark within Rockefeller Center: from the Grand Foyer to the Great Stage with its four hydraulic-powered elevators that raise and lower the dancers and the orchestra; the elegant lounges decorated with furniture and carpets designed specifically to complement the theatre’s Art Deco architectural features; the rehearsal halls, dressing rooms, and dormitory for the dancers should they need to spend the night or take a snooze between shows.

Davis does a spectacular job weaving fiction and fact as she includes the frightening true story of the “mad bomber” who terrorized New Yorkers — planting pipe bombs in theaters, terminals, libraries, and in Radio City Music Hall — and eluded police for sixteen years in the 1940s and 50s.

Marion spots the bomber before he flees the scene and she feels confident that she can help the police identify him. So it is that our dancing darling becomes a part-time sleuth and our historic novel borders on a mystery-thriller.

The story seamlessly alternates chapters between Marion’s youth as a Rockette and her 55-year-old self (reluctantly) attending a reunion in 1992.

Dust off your dancing shoes, sit back, and enjoy the show!

This was spectacular in tying the historical facts and events to the Rockettes of the Rocky City Music Hall. In 1956, Marion auditioned for the Rockettes against her boyfriend and father's wishes. She experienced grueling and endless rehearsals with precision dancing.
It was a scary time for New York as the "Big Apple Bomber" terrorized the city and the Music Hall was not spared. Marion became involved in one of the first techniques in criminal profiling. It became a little too personal for her.
The story changes to currently, Marion is moving into an assisted living facility as she suffers the deterioration from Parkinson disease. As she is having her memories packed away in boxes to be dropped off at a Goodwill store, she is invited to attend as a guest at the Rockettes' reunion.

The story details Marion's family life with not all of it being pleasant. Her mother died in a tragic accident and was raised by her father. The author reveals so much more about the life of her mother and the behavior of her father as a controlling man and his will to have reins on everyone.
I enjoyed it even if I knew very little about the Rockettes other than my fascination as a child on their perfection.
Thank you NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Dutton for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Marion became a famous Rockette and had a busy life while a dangerous bomber was causing trouble. The book covers many topics like family problems, mysteries, and murder. There's a bit of romance, but it's not the main focus. The story jumps back and forth between 1956, when Marion becomes a Rockette and experiences love and heartbreak, and the present. The characters in the book are well-developed and make the story come alive. I enjoyed Marion's relationship with Peter, who is a bit strange but also very smart. Overall, it's a well-written book that will keep you engaged until the end.

4 solid stars! I really enjoyed Fiona Davis’ latest, set in iconic Radio City Music Hall, “The Spectacular”! It’s way more than just a Hist. Fiction, it’s a mystery too, as we hunt for the “Big Apple Bomber” 💣 in the 1950’s, along with Marion the heroine (based on a true story, I’d never heard of). Fast-paced & engaging, it kept me reading rather late at night. Recommend, and it was much better than the author’s previous, to which I gave a mixed-review. I loved all the little tidbits about the Rockettes too! 👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️👯‍♀️

Marion Brooks is nineteen, she lives with her father Simon and sister Judy in Bronxville. Marion dreams of being a dancer and performer, her father has other ideas and he wants her to marry and settle down.

Marion auditions to be one of the Rockettes, a member of Radio City Music Hall’s famous dancing troupe and she assumes she won' be selected. When Marion is chosen, she can’t believe it, she dreads telling her father and his reaction. The rehearsals begin, the days are long and the girls are put through their paces by the producers and choreographer. They perform four times a day, each show goes for ninety minutes and it has to be perfectly synchronized.

For sixteen years the “Big Apple Bomber” has been terrorizing New York, he has been planting bombs all over the city, he chooses crowded and busy places and the police haven’t been able to catch him. One night a bomb explodes in Radio City Music Hall, Marion is sure she saw a suspicious man sitting in the front row and she tells the police.

Through her friend and fellow dancer Bunny, Marion meets Dr. Peter Griggs, he’s physiological resident and she can’t stop thinking about something he told her a few weeks ago. Peter uses information about a person’s past, upbringing, childhood, anything that’s happened to them to cause mental trauma and he’s noticed patterns in his patients. At first the police are very skeptical about letting Dr. Griggs look at the evidence, with another close call and the pressure on them to find the “Big Apple Bomber” they finally listen to Dr. Griggs.

Marion has a personal connection to the investigation, a sad one and she’s determined to help catch the culprit. In doing so, Marion looks at her own life and the choices she's made, she questions her relationship with her father, what happened to her mother, can she continue to perform with the Rockettes, and is she putting the crowd and her fellow dancers in danger?

I received a copy of The Spectacular by Fiona Davis from Edelweiss and Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review. Once again an ingenious Ms. Davis uses a New York City Landmark and true facts to write her latest engrossing historical fiction novel. A story about the Rockettes and Radio City Music Hall, I had no idea the dancers literately worked, ate, were measured for their costumes, had access to medical treatment and could sleep in the building if needed.

The narrative looks at people's idea's in the 1950's, the main character Marion's father didn't think dancing was respectable profession, when in fact it took a lot of dedication, training, skill and he should have been proud of his daughter. The friendship and bond formed between the dancers and it was a prestigious sisterhood. Five stars from me, using the new concept of psychological profiling made the story really interesting and one of the best books I have read this year.

The latest in a series of novels by Fiona Davis that are set in New York City, it focuses on Radio City Music Hall and the Rocketts in the 1950s. Touching on themes of feminism, corporate greed, mental illness and the beginnings of criminal profiling, the novel weaves them together into a very satisfying story.

The Spectacular tells the story of Marion, a lifelong dancer and dance teacher who is offered a spot as a Rockett despite the fact that her family and boyfriend disapprove of her decision. Marion is torn between her families wishes and her desire to live her own life. Meeting new friends, including a shy but interesting young man, Marion feels she is where she belongs.
Based on a true story, Marion also gets caught up in the search for a person who has planted bombs throughout the city and who sends letters blaming the company Marion’s father works for. The conclusion well done if a little unrealistic in parts but still rounds out the story nicely.

Fiona Davis has a wonderful way of bringing the history and landmarks of New York City to life, along with an engaging story and interesting characters. One of her best novels yet.- Jennifer C.

Loved this book. I learned so much from the author about Radio City Music Hall, where I worked for years. I had no idea about the bomber in NYC either. Davis's descriptions of the culture, scenery, and actions was superb. Glad to read this one! Note somehow my original reviewed was erased and I accidentally overwrote it with one from another book. So I fixed it short-term til I have time to come back and write a better one.

4.5 stars. This is my first Fiona Davis and I plan to read more as this was excellent!! Set in 1956 NYC, this follows our main protagonist 19-year-old Marion Brooks as she follows her dream of auditioning for the Radio City Rockettes.. and to her surprise is hired to join the troupe. This little gem focuses on family, friendship, mysteries and murder with dangerous situations revolving around the “Big Apple Bomber.” I learned interesting facts about the mad bomber whom I had never known existed before reading this book. A fascinating story, would recommend!! — Pub. 6/13/23

Historical fiction is becoming my jam! This was truly spectacular. Our main character, Marion, decides to audition for the Rockettes on a whim. When she makes the cut, her father is infuriated. It’s the 1950s; Marion is meant to marry, have children, and keep house. Marion’s new occupation also puts a rift in her relationship with her sister, Judy, but she is able to convince her sister to attend a show. This is where our story really begins…

While The Spectacular is about Marion’s refusal to conform to her father’s wishes and societal norms, Davis also incorporates the true story of the "Mad Bomber” of New York, the first case that used criminal profiling. The Mad Bomber held the entire city in fear for sixteen years before he was identified… WOW! It was amazing to watch Marion become wrapped up in the case and begin her own quest to solve it.

If a book makes me stay up past my bedtime, that means it’s really good. I could not put this book down. I loved the little tidbits of history Davis provided, ranging from the Rockettes’ good luck traditions before a show to how mentally ill patients were perceived and treated in the fifties. It was my first from this author and such an excellent read. Davis did not “kick out” with this one, and this reader gives her a standing ovation.

I enjoyed this and found the story entertaining and well written. However, I felt there was too much modern subjects and themes that wouldn’t have been so easily accepted back then. I also wish there would have been a greater focus on the Rockettes.

While it is mentioned in the author’s note at the end, I’m surprised the synopsis didn’t include the fact that the “Big Apple Bomber” is the fictionalized version of the “Mad Bomber” who terrorized New York in the 1940s and 1950s. His letters and psychological profile in the book are written almost verbatim to the real life ones.

"I wish I had taken a moment… back when I was dancing, to stop and appreciate what it felt like to leave my leg effortlessly high, what it was like when my limbs and mind were rich with music, and my body snapped into place."

I know I will be in the minority with this review, but that's okay because (repeat after me) not every book is for every person. But here's a little about what worked and didn't work for me in The Spectacular by Fiona Davis.

The historical fiction + mystery mash-up was well executed and added just the appropriate amount of suspense to the story, keeping me interested. I know Fiona Davis bases her books on real-life events, so I had to stop looking up specific circumstances in the book as I didn't want to spoil them for myself.

Unfortunately, the writing style felt abrupt and unnatural in places which caused me to see the MC, Marion, in a more juvenile light, distracting me from the story. The writing felt completely different from Davis' other novels. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The book's first quarter was just meh for me as I struggled with Marion's father and his control over her life (but then again, it is set in the 1950s). I enjoyed the middle half of the book as this is when the mystery element is introduced. Unfortunately, the last quarter did not work for me. When we reached the story's apex and what would've been a perfect conclusion, there were 50ish pages left, and this last section added nothing further to the book. It caused me to drop from a solid 4 ⭐️ down to a 3 ⭐️ as I thought the author was trying to do too much with the story.

🫤 Pacing was okay
💃 Behind the scenes look at the Rockettes
✍🏼 Short & unnatural writing

Again, not every book is for every reader, so I encourage you to check out The Spectacular. But if you're looking for a Fiona Davis title, I highly recommend The Chelsea Girls!

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Really Was Happy to Read Fiona Davis’ new book. This is set in 1956, and 19 year old Marion longs to be a dancer and not so restricted by the expectations of her time period. Her father absolutely expects her to get married to her boyfriend and forget her silly hobby of being a dancer. Marion decides to try out for the Rockettes and is really surprised when she is accepted as a new girl. Her Dad and Boyfriend both are not pleased. Her father so much, he won’t even allow her to live in his house. Still, Marion is ambitious, and is determined to make a life she enjoys in NYC and work at Radio City Music Hall.

She meets a young Resident, Peter who is working at Creedmore Psychiatric Hospital. He works with mostly schizophrenic patients and is upset that primarily he is just told to heavily medicate them. He is extremely good at profiling people. It ends up there is a bomber who has been setting off explosives in Iconic Places, including Radio City Music Hall for 16 years. Marion has information about the bomber, but the police treat her as just an uninformed woman. She finally asks Peter for help to profile this Mad Man and hopes to stop anymore violence.

I really liked reading about The Rockettes and how hard each worked to make their performance look effortless. It was also great to see Marion break out and live the life she wants. There is a Boarding House for Performers that she stays at with another Rockette, Bunny as her Roommate. She starts to learn about life and decide what works for her. This was difficult to do in 1956, as it is considered trashy or at best frivolous to be an actress, dancer, or in the arts.

The bombing was a side part that added interest since Fiona Davis based this on an actual man, called the Mad Bomber who detonated over 30 bombs around City Landmarks.

I rated this 4* as I thought the ending went on a little too long. The story had basically been wrapped up, yet continued a bit more than needed. There was a dual timeline, most set in 1956 and some in 1992. I think perhaps it would have worked better with just the one timeline. All said though, I did enjoy the book and recommend it.

This book IS Spectacular! Fiona Davis has done it again and actually made history come to life. Her beautiful and exciting stories bring color to real events and her plots include drama and interest even when the focus is something I have not had any interest in! Fiona always highlights the issues that women faced (and face) in an interesting way. I truly loved this book and am ready to visit Radio City immediately!

The Spectacular refers to the Radio City Rockettes program at Christmas and in 1956 Marion Brooks has auditioned. Marion is on the cusp of adulthood and about to become engaged and give up her beloved dancing. and her safe homelife. However, when she is chosen for the troupe she cannot believe her luck, nor can she share the news with her family. In the background, there is a terrorist, in NYC called the Big Apple Bomber. The bomber closes in on Radio City all the while Marion is trying to make a choice on dancing or following her father's wish to be married. Read on to find out what happens next, you won't be sorry! If you like history, dance, glamourous New York or just love the story of a woman bucking tradition, The Spectacular is for you!

In 1956 19-year-old Marion Brooks is excited and flattered to be selected as one of the Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall’s glamorous precision-dancing troupe. Then one night a bomb explodes in the theater, the latest in a string of explosions around New York that have been going on for sixteen years in popular crowded spaces.

Fiona Davis has again created a world out of reach of most of us and peopled it with incredible characters including Radio City Music Hall. As well as showing us what a Rockette's life is like, we also learn how criminal profiling began to be used in identifying perpetrators. This story mostly takes place during 1956 but we're also afforded brief glimpses into Marion's life in 1992 as she's escorted to a Rockettes' 60th anniversary celebration. This is just an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. I was saddened to learn that Fiona Davis has been diagnosed with Parkinson's and I wish for a slow progression of the disease for her and look forward to many more books from her. All the stars!

Thanks to the London Public Library for the loan of this book.

This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, historical fiction novel which is based on actual events. It vividly depicts the glamour of the Rockettes in the 1950's, and has mystery, suspense, heartbreak, family drama, a touch of romance, and a satisfying conclusion. The author's notes are interesting and informative, and are truly appreciated. I listened to the audio version of this novel, and the narrators, Rachel L. Jacobs and Kimberly Farr, do an excellent job depicting the characters and their personalities.

2.5. While the story was interesting enough (especially because I love The Rockettes), and it was nice to read historical fiction about this era, save for one plot twist, this was a very predictable and unbelievable read with weak dialogue, and, unfortunately, there were many current day themes that should not be expected of that time period.

I enjoyed this - and will enjoy meeting online with the author in just a few days to discuss it. Fiona Davis largely uses a major New York City attraction as her setting, and this one is Radio City Music Hall, featuring the Rockettes. But intertwined, is the very real phenomena of a bomber who was setting off bombs in many locations at the time. The introduction at the time, of psychological profiling to catch criminals, is also featured in the book in the form of a love interest. Our heroine is a Rockette, and an early feminist one, who seeks to find her way, uncover the truth about her family, and catch a criminal. All in about 350 pages. It was actually a great ride, and I really enjoyed it.

The authors note was very helpful, as I wanted to know which parts of the story were historically true. But in the author's note, Fiona Davis shares with us that she has had a relatively recent diagnosis of Parkinsons. I wanted to say, Fiona, all blessings to you, and I too believe in your health and resilience. I have the feeling you are a lot like your characters and female heroines, and I have met quite a few. So I am sending you my love and positive energy, but also my total confidence in you.

I am new to discovering Fiona Davis, having only read The Magnolia Palace before her latest, The Spectacular. She is quickly becoming a fast favorite with 2 books I absolutely loved!

To those newbie readers of Davis, she's known for setting her books at a historical building in New York City. Readers will find themselves at Radio City Music Hall in The Spectacular, a place I have walked by and now wish I had purchased a ticket to see a show.

Synopsis: New York City, 1956: Nineteen-year-old Marion Brooks future is marrying and staying home to raise her children. It's the life of a proper lady and yet Marion finds herself feeling trapped. So when she comes across an opportunity to audition for the famous Radio City Rockettes, she jumps at the chance to exchange her predictable future for the dazzling life of a performer.

Meanwhile, the city is reeling from a string of bombings orchestrated by a person the press has nicknamed the “Big Apple Bomber,” who has been terrorizing the citizens of New York for 16 years by planting bombs in popular, crowded spaces.

I will start saying I love a good historical novel. I am always amazed about all the things I have never heard about. The Big Apple Bomber is definitely that for me! Who knew bombs were left in public places such as libraries, phone booths, offices, and theaters for over 16 years! This case also includes the use of criminal profiling in police work and led to the examination the role of severe mental illness plays a role for such crimes.

I loved having a backstage pass at Radio City and seeing the Rockettes through Marion’s eyes. It was fascinating to experience her joy of being on stage, the fear of disappointing her family and the new friendships of a young woman living independently during that period of time. Davis shares a compelling story showcasing the Rockette's grueling schedules and breathtaking performances. It all felt so vivid and alive!

With themes of conformity, societal expectations, and the pursuit of one’s dreams, The Spectacular is sure to resonate with readers. I also enjoyed watching Marion's growth. Her determination, drive, and ambition were inspiring.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton for this dazzling story of a kick-line dancer and her determination to uncover the truth of a decades old and continuing crime.

•Plot: 4/5 (a Rockette helps capture a rogue bomber)

•Characters: 2/5 (everybody is just a little boring and insufferable)

•Writing: 2/5 (a lot of “And then this” “Three weeks later” and the dialogue was SO stilted)

•Ending: 2/5 (the main character is 55 at the end of the book and the author acts like she’s an 80 year old)

If this book had strictly been about working as a Rockette in the ‘50s, it would have been at least four stars (I love stuff like that and have been watching Rockette videos on YouTube all day). But instead, we get this wild plot about a bomber and a power company. There was just too much and also not enough at the same time. It definitely could have been shortened by about 50 pages. Side note: if you have any great recommendations for books about performers in NYC during the 1920s-1950s, send them my way.

I love that Fiona Davis brings her stories to life within iconic NYC buildings, in this case it is Radio City Music Hall and the Rockettes.

NYC – 1956 - Marion Brooks at 19-yrs old is fired from her job as dance teacher and on a whim decides to try out for the famous Rockette dancers at Radio City Music Hall……to her great amazement she gets the job, h/ever, her controlling father is dead set against any such nonsense and has already planned her married life with the man he has chosen for her. When Marion goes against her father’s wishes he banishes her from their quiet suburban home.

Meanwhile it is during the reign of the “Big Apple Bomber” who operated throughout the city for several years without being caught. When the bomber hits Radio City during a performance of the Rockettes and someone Marion loves is killed and she gives a description of the man she saw in the audience who was the likely suspect she feels the police are not doing their job when they don’t take her seriously.

Having met the young Dr. Peter Griggs who is studying psychiatry she enlists his help to propose a ‘profile’ of the bomber, but the police are not interested, leaving Marion and Peter to go it alone.

There are many aspects to this story touching on the true story of the NYC “Mad Bomber” (George Metesky), and the history of the Rockettes and Radio City Music Hall. Dr. Peter Griggs is based on James A. Brussel considered the father of criminal profiling.

The ending is touching and exactly what I had hoped for – yes, I found “The Spectacular” spectacular.

So much to love within these pages: A story in NYC in the 50s, about a young woman seeking the freedom to choose a career over marriage who ends up as a Rockette during a (true) time in history when there was a bomber loose in the city for 16 years. She and a psychiatrist friend seek out to catch the guy, which results in the first incident of suspect profiling, ever -- also true but fictionalized a bit here.

These are all some of my favorite things! I fondly remember watching the Rockettes as a child and then having the opportunity to see a live show on a trip to the Big Apple. The descriptions of what these dancers endured was fascinating, as was the profiling of the bomber.

I highly recommend.

I was immersed in this story about 1950s New York, Radio City and the Rockettes from its first pages to the last. What an interesting tale Fiona Davis weaved with romance, mystery and all the glitz of Radio City Music Hall. I loved being transported to a bygone era and reliving it through Marion Brooks' eyes and experienced all her joys and heartbreaks with her in this expertly crafted story.

No one writes New York City like Fiona Davis; she eats, sleeps, and breathes it during her research and her books simply capture the essence of the city in whatever era she’s telling a story of so perfectly.

1956: a young woman is a dance instructor who soon becomes a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall at the same time a mad man is unleashing bombs across famous NYC buildings and eventually Marion’s life becomes changed forever by an incident with the bomber; setting up one hell of an interesting plot. With a small timeline running in 1992 as well, Fiona interweaves them beautifully, and I could not put it down.

I loved it!
