A New York-based screenwriter, Carl John Lee has written a bunch of movies you've either never seen, or would never admit to seeing.

Inspired by Roger Corman and the golden age of exploitation films, Lee probes deep into the filthy underbelly of America, contrasting his bleak worldview with dark humor.

He has three dogs, two cats, and not a shred of dignity.

And here I was thinking I didn’t like splatterpunk anymore!!

There were still things I didn’t like- this contained wayyyy too much smutty scenes for me, but I know it comes with the genre. And certain things that happened at the end I kinda mentally checked out from (I’ll include them in the TW’s below) but I’m a gore hound through and through, and I loved how inventive and graphic the gore was. My face was pretty much frozen in a 😨 the whole reading experience.

If you like David Sodergren’s books, I think you’ll like this!! Although again this has more sexual scenes

TWs, beware these themselves might be upsetting to read:

Gore, disemboweling, excrement, sex involving teenage aged characters, sexual violence/mutilation, pedophillia, graphic gore, body horror (including like every part of the body including eyes and teeth), homophobia/lesbophobia, self harming, suicide, and bullying.

The end sequence includes most of these, but also infanticide (it’s not as prolonged as everything else but it does happen and is upsetting), necrophillia, and cannibalism. Honestly there might be more I’m not thinking of, I was pretty numb by the end.

Awesome, classic horror concept! I had Caddyshack on in the background while I was reading this. When Ty Webb snorts the salt, I dropped my Kindle laughing. Luckily, it was fine and all was well. Ok, so back to the book…Carl John Lee writes some extremely fun stories. This took some notes from Carrie and Nightmare on Elm Street, along with maintaining the integrity of an old school horror movie. Lots of irrational and impulsive teenagers doing what they’re best at. You know…sex, bullying, and even the occasional comatose girl who can enter people’s minds and make them do horrible things. All pretty normal stuff. I think? But the author did a great job keeping the focus on a select few characters and not letting the faceless victims overtake the story, which is a common mistake horror authors make. You also really felt the struggle that Charlie went through. Was it wrong that Susan was hurting the people who hurt her? Was her budding romance with Lynette ok to do, with Susan still technically being alive? Lots of internal struggle going on, which gave Charlie some great depth. Oh, and there is a fair amount of lesbian sensuality and sexy time, too. So for anyone who has religious objections to things like that, I’d find another story. For the rest of us sinful degenerates, sit back and watch the magic as tongues and fingers disappear! The afterword also had me cracking up, so be sure to read that, too. Overall just a very enjoyable horror story that is sure to make your day.

If you’re in the mood for some splatterpunk, extreme-horror, goodness, then Psychic Teen Bloodbath is the story for you.
It can be summed up very well with this one quote from the introduction; ”filled to the brim with gore, intestinal drippings, feces, splattered flesh, sprayed guts, shattered heads... oh, and one of the sweetest love stories I think I've encountered in the annals of extreme horror.”
Carl John Lee’s horror stories read like movies, his work feels identical to a cinematic experience because he was a horror movie screenwriter and his books are based on old scripts that never got filmed. He’s definitely an indie horror author to look out for. Quite the genius of the genre who has flown under the radar!

Psychic Teen Bloodbath is part-gory revenge horror, part-queer love story.
Susan and Charlie are at their high school dance, but are being tormented by horrible bully Greta and her gang of cronies. This is set in the 70s and these bullies’ disgusting homophobia is rampant. Greta is targeting Susan extra hard with the bullying that particular night because both girls turned up to the dance wearing the same dress. Then a tragic “accident” befalls Susan. Charlie is convinced it was no accident and Greta & co are to blame. With Susan not longer at school, Charlie feels left alone with the bullies until she starts to get close to a new girl, Lynette.
Susan has been left in a coma since that night. Eleven months on, she cannot speak or move. Her eyes are fixed open, she cannot close them. Deep inside, she has gone mad, locked inside of her own body. And she wants revenge. But how will she be able to exact revenge?

4 gruesome stars 🔪💀

Thanks Peter for bringing this one to my attention, the type of book that I never read. There were moments early on and towards the middle that were creepy, but also clever and entertaining. But by the end, a total shitshow. There is a reason I don't read this.

Uncle Carl returns with his 5th release and 2nd of 2022!

I don’t know how I’ve struck gold here, but for some reason Carl and I have really hit it off and it’s always pleasant to get emails from him every few weeks. Coincidentally, I’m writing this review on the one year release-aversary of my novel Incarnate, which Carl kindly did the cover art for.

A month or so back, I get an email from Carl with the subject line “Advance Copy of The Ballad of Sh1tty Pants Joe” but the 1 was an I – don’t think for one second Carl has lost his edge. I chuckled and opened and it found a digital copy of his newest attached, kindly created by his son. He gave me a brief summary and finished it by saying this – “I go places in this one even people wouldn’t like Uncle Carl would!”

Good grief was he right.

What I liked: If you’ve read any of Carl John Lee’s work, you’ll know what you’re in for – only this one goes full Spinal Tap and turns the extreme knob up to eleven. If you require Trigger Warnings, Uncle Carl has provided them, and boy are there plenty here.

The novel opens with Charlie and Susan, two teen girls secretly in love, surrounded by a town and school full of homophobic jerks. At the big dance, they sneak away, only for a horrible attack to happen and Susan ends up in a coma, totally paralyzed. But her mind still works, and after a year of struggling, she’s finally found the ability to use and a control others.

It’s with that stepping stone that Lee really begins to unleash bloody torment on all who wronged her and Charlie, even as Charlie struggles to comprehend and understand what is going on.

This will remind readers of Carrie but also of the extreme horror reads from back in the 70’s where characters were belittled, bullied and beaten for being ‘different.’ Lee does a solid job of doling out revenge, while making the main characters sympathetic and strong.

Of course, it all comes to a tremendous and stomach-churning finale. In the afterword, Lee notes that he tried at one point to present this as a film option but the budget would be astronomical due to the amount of special effects that would be required for the gore. I completely understand.

What I didn’t like: This is a weird one, because every single character that Lee creates for the reader to hate ends up getting eviscerated at some point, so while normally those characters would be a negative for some readers, it gets resolved throughout.

I will say again – there are Trigger Warnings listed and this is a novel where you would be best served to take a glance at them before diving in. Nothing is safe and some truly horrible events occur within.

Why you should buy this: Well, by this point, Carl John Lee should really have a subscription service, because if you’ve read any of his work and loved it, you know you’ll be getting this one and diving in. For new readers, I think this is a perfect spot to jump in and be introduced to Uncle Carl’s deft prose and deranged paintings. And as always, the Author’s Note/Afterword at the end is hilariously ridiculous and makes me hope some day we’ll get an autobiography from him.

PSYCHIC TEENAGE BLOODBATH [2022] By Carl John Lee
My Review 4.5 Stars

This short novel designated by Amazon as “Occult Horror” was published by Carl John Lee in the Fall of 2022 and has not enjoyed the readership and exposure it deserves in my opinion. However, it was gratifying to see that on Goodreads over 3000 members want to read it. Personally, I was not familiar with Carl John Lee albeit I have heard his name before. This was the first novel I have read by Lee. It was the designated Group Read for one of my favorite book clubs for the month of May. There is a terrific Foreword by the Splatterpunk Queen Judith Sonnet. Her admiration for Lee oozes off the pages. I could relate to her words of praise after reading the excellent selection of extreme horror that is “Psychic Teenage Bloodbath”.

I found it interesting that the first 25% of the novel reads like a tender, well written YA lesbian love story extolling the angst of girls loving girls in the bigoted high schools of America in 1978. It is the night of the Prom and Charlie ingeniously arranges for the love of her life, Susan, to accompany her to the roof where they could have privacy and dance together while watching the stars and hearing the music from below.

The happiest moment of both their young lives is callously ruined when they are accidentally spotted through the skylight from below on the main floor of the stadium. The story is emotionally touching and infuriating to the reader when Charlie leaves Susan unattended to go downstairs and get them punch, but is intercepted by the freaky Mr. Carradine. The time gap allowed a quartet of mean-spirited bullies to assault and humiliate Susan where she waited for Charlie, the girl she loved to return. The group berated, humiliated, and ultimately assaulted Susan which led to her plummeting from the roof of the schoolhouse. Susan was grievously injured and put in an irreversible coma, and the reader grieves along with our protagonist young Charlie, who has lost her first love to the cruelty and bias of her schoolmates.

The reader knows going in that psychic phenomena will play a major role in the remainder of the novel. It has been 11 months and attending classes at the high school have been horrendous for Charlie. The bigotry and the cruelty are manifested on a day-to-day basis and she is praying for the last day of her Senior Year to finally show on the calendar. She dutifully visits the comatose Susan, talks to her and reads to her. Then one day fate throws her a welcome curve ball. Charlie meets a transfer student who was physically injured by her fellow students and whose parents have transferred her to Charlie’s High School to finish out the year to get her High School Diploma. They become friends and then the physical attraction between them cannot be denied.

It starts insidiously but then like a snowball rolling down a hill, shortly the psychic energy of the comatose Susan will be bringing Hell when she manifests her powers. The extreme horror is exactly that, and underlying the vengeful spirit of Susan, Charlie tries to just make it to graduation. She is “in love” with the new girl at this point, and the new girl does not believe that the comatose ex-girlfriend is responsible for the extreme violence and chaos…until she does.

I honestly thought that this novel was out of this world. The latter part of the book was incessant psychic warfare at warp speed. That is the only reason I deducted half a point. I loved the narrative once it slowed and levelled out toward the finish. I loved the twist at the end.

I also read the afterword by the author Carl John Lee. He sounds colorful. The novel I just read was originally supposed to be a screen script for a horror movie (which explains the frantic chaos of blood and bodily fluids splashing in every direction at the end of the novel).

EXCITING EXAMPLE OF SPLATTERPUNK THAT WAS ORIGINALLY DESTINED FOR THE BIG SCREEN

Wow.. literally jaw dropping in parts. But I must say it definitely satisfied that little demented part of me. Very well written and could certainly tell that the writer was a screen writer cause it was wrote out just like a movie.
There were parts that I personally did not care for which is why it’s 3 stars for me instead of 4. But this was a good gory gory read!

I didn't really like this book much...but I didn't hate it! It started off really good with Susan's "accident" and I settled into the book quickly...but when the psychic revenge started...it all turned a little silly and over the top for me...with exploding arses and all the hospital mayhem and carnage,I saw the point to the story but it just didn't do it for me.There were gory moments that were well detailed and the ending left me guessing...as it did for Charlie...I've read better from this author!
I did like that the "Trigger Warnings" were listed on the very "last" page....that made me laugh!!😂😃😆😁🤣

Wow. Wowwowwowwowwowwowwow! I'm a big fan of Uncle Carl, having really enjoyed all of his previous books. Psychic Teenage Bloodbath, however, blows even those out of the water! Fellow extreme horror writer Judith Sonnet told me how great this book was when I discussed Carl John Lee with her on twitter - and she isn't exaggerating when she tells us "you ain't ready for this" in the forward she wrote for this book.

Uncle Carl wrote splatter/exploitation horror screenplays back in the 70s and it really shows in his writing. Psychic Teenage Bloodbath comprises of all of the very best things we love about that sub-genre and if a horror director doesn't immediately buy the rights to make this into a movie, I'll find a way to do it myself!

The kills are brutal, creative and gory. There are some genuinely funny moments, some very satisfying revenge and even a beautiful queer love story at the center (we love some good representation!) that makes you really care about the protagonists.

One of my favourite reads this year. If you have an interest at all in the genre, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

In a word: cartoonish. I liked the premise, but felt the execution was lacking, and not exactly subtle, though I think that comes with the extreme horror/splatterpunk territory. As a horror fan, I’m glad I tried it, but if this is as character-driven as the genre gets, I think I’ll probably stick with my normie horror, thank you very much.

If you’re a bit of a gore hound, and find yourself agreeing with author Carl John Lee, who is of the opinion that the more “main character[s]… saved by the memory of a really great ass”, the better, then Psychic Teenage Bloodbath might be the pick for you.

You guys know I’m not one for histrionics *pause for laughter* but I’m putting out an APB for everyone to go read this book asap. I’m crowning Psychic Teenage Bloodbath with the title, “favorite horror movie that they never made,” which is a travesty really. From the first chapter, I felt like I was watching this as a vivid movie-in-my-head, up until that satisfyingly grandiose, bloody ending.

Quick synopsis: Some homophobic bullies cause Susan’s girlfriend Charlie to have a tragic accident at their prom, landing her in a coma. Months later, Susan attempts to pick up the pieces & get through the rest of senior year with the bullies still going unpunished for their transgressions. Little do they know that Charlie’s mind is not only active but getting stronger by the day, as she gets “psyched up” on the new playing field where she’s in control & able to finally get her bloody revenge.

This felt like the lesbi-heroine Carrie ending that we deserved. If they ever kickstarted this to be made into a movie I would slap my money down immediately. Until then, I just found out the sequel comes out in December, so I’m excited for that! I got so much joy from this, I’m glad to have become a new fan of Carl John Lee. I look forward to reading more of his work & recommend all horror-lovers to do the same.

Awful. Absolutely awful

I got this through the abominable Bookclub which normally send some pretty good reads. I noted the extreme horror aspect, read the trigger warnings and thought I could handle it (hell-I’ve seen stuff like a Serbian film and the original martyrs. Although gore isn’t my favourite genre of horror, I can handle it)

I started off really enjoying the book-some pretty inventive deaths (and one which had a touch of the chuck palahniuk about it in his short story “guts”). Then we got to the titular blood bath

The infanticide- totally unnecessary but I was expecting it.
The numerous penis mutilating deaths… right ok, gross but can handle it
The guy who is basically having sex with all the corpses for no good reason that I could see…. The straw that broke the camel’s back.

I DNF’d it even though I was so close to the end. Realised I don’t need to read it. It’s a shame as it did pique my interest and I started off enjoying it… but just no

Maybe I’m not cut out for extreme horror (although I’ve not had a problem before) or maybe all of this was just a bit unnecessary.

Would not recommend

This started off stronger than it ended for me. While I mostly enjoyed this, it was kind of a mediocre read for me. The gore was there, the pacing was good. Again, I found Lee’s writing style to be enjoyable but I think the general storyline is what I wasn’t meshing with. I found Susan going to the lengths she did didn’t match the character we’re originally introduced to and there wasn’t really a good enough reason for her spirit going completely wacko, crazy killer.

With that being said, if you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced extreme horror book, this is a solid choice I think you will enjoy. I’ll probably still check out the sequel that’s coming out soon, I just won’t be in a huge rush is all.

God, this was awful. This book is more smutty than extreme horror - sure, there's some necrophilia and violence that might disturb the average reader, but this is by no means splatterpunk.

Safe to say, this is the last time I trust TikTok recommendations. The writing is so poor, and as a gay woman, the unnecessary sex scenes made me cringe so hard. The male gaze scared me more than all the gore this book is supossed to contain. The girls return home after witnessing a brutal murder, and one of them begins to "lick the cleft of her buttocks, teasing her with playful bites".

"God, where did you learn to do that? That thing with your tongue?"

"Gonna eat you, gonna eat you all up, gonna eat your tits, your fucking tits," he murmured, the deranged ramblings of a lunatic in a psych ward."

"The flesh parted like the expectant lips of a lover."

The characters were severly underdeveloped, especially the bullies, and the ending was obvious from miles away.

My god, this was fucked up—the rampant homophobia and bullying was heartbreaking.

I went into this pretty blind (i.e., I only read the synopsis), and this had many things that I typically don’t enjoy. For instance, revenge-type stories, the supernatural element, and, most particularly, horror books set in the 70s, 80s, 90s. (Too many authors equate nostalgia with originality).

Now that I’m off my high horse, none of what I previously mentioned really matters because, overall, the story was mostly done well. The various sexual assaults felt random and unnecessary, but I understand how splatterpunk works. Which also means that there’s some humor in here, and some scenes had me audibly laughing at their absurdity (e.g., the lunchroom scene with Michelle 💩).

Highly recommend to anyone interested in extreme horror.

This is camp. It’s over the top and MAN is it gory. It’s a wild ride, and you can tell the author is a screenwriter. Did it change my life? No. Did I have a fun 2 hours reading it? I did.

This is the bloodiest Carrie-esque story I’ve ever read, but it was so over the top that it was pretty desensitizing at the end. I’ve never read a more accurately-titled book, though, so there are points to be awarded for hitting the nail on the head.

This is extreme horror. It’s splatterpunk body horror for the sake of being shocking, and it plays out like a nightmare across the back of your eyelids. It’s a wild time, and I chuckled to myself once or twice. I don’t know what that says about me…

DNF half way through, described as a bloodbath but most of it was just perverted and gross. I just didn't like how sexual the book was becoming as I wanted gore but instead was just reading fucked up sex stuff over and over with little to no actual plot behind it. Most characters aren't around long enough to be developed properly and the ones that are are pretty unlikable, like there's no explanation about how Susan goes from shy and sad to perverted and disgusting and just feels a bit under developed.
The other thing that kept nagging at me was the fact that this is a lesbian relationship written by a (from what I know) straight man. It shows. They're never just a couple hanging out together, there's always kissing or holding or talk of sex, the book is constantly bringing up boobs and underwear and it just really wasn't for me. I understand wanting to put a sex scene or two in your horror but this was just disgusting, and not in a good way.

So Carl used to write scripts for low budget indie films and I find that his books read like scripts, this would make a great, gory horror.

Susan has been in a coma for a year, she has lost her sanity but has learned she can access something that she can use to exact her revenge.

This is a pure blood soaked horror of brutal revenge and is not for those with a sensitive stomach, I loved it. Set in the 70’s this touches on the prejudices of the time especially towards the LGBT community. The main female characters are gay and closeted in their narrow minded community, but then outed. I am not your keeper but please check trigger warnings, this is not called an extreme novel for no reason, you have been warned. 5 stars ⭐️

This is my first Carl John Lee book and I loved it!! The plot was really fun, the book had likeable characters (and many unlikeable characters that all got what they deserved) and it was just generally a very fun read.

In my opinion, whilst it was extreme horror it was a little on the tamer side so if you’ve read a lot of extreme horror it’s not going to be anything particularly difficult to read. That being said, I’d still highly recommend it to people who like this subgenre, 5/5⭐️

As Judith Sonnet warns you in the foreword “You ain’t ready for this” and boy was she right! This book thrilled me and repulsed me at the same time. Theres high volumes of blood, filth and gore seeping through its pages all while following the sweetest of love stories! How the author manage to conquer that is pure sorcery!

I felt instantly attached to the story after being introduced to Susan and Charlie who are queer and deeply in love but seen as outcasts by their peers. The character development is exceptionally well written as they felt like real people I could connect with. Things take a wild turn after an incident with Susan left her in a coma and she starts to develop new skills of telekinesis. All the while Charlie meets a new love interest and has conflicting feelings between Susan and Lynette. Now, this is a story of REVENGE, bullies and a new girlfriend is enough to infuriate someone. What ensues is chaos of unimaginable horror! Susan was like a mix of Carrie and Freddy Krueger on steroids and as the title suggests, this turns into a bloodbath that takes it to new heights of depravity. I’m only knocking off a star because it’s my personal preference to not read graphic scenes of sex and sexual assault but overall I had such a blast reading this.

If you’re a fan of Lucio Fulci, this may be right up your alley as the gore and dark humor is highlighted in graphic detail. If you decide to pick this up, remember to have fun with it! Also keep in mind it’s an extreme horror novel and readers unfamiliar with the splatterpunk genre should proceed with caution. Read this if you enjoy books set in the 70s with themes of revenge and supernatural powers! There’s also a sequel to this that I’ll definitely be devouring as Carl John Lee aka “Uncle Carl” has gained a new fan.
