The Cartwells #1

A Game of Hearts

Rate this book
If you can't join them... beat them.

Marigold Cartwell has only one goal: to defeat her long-time rival on the archery field. She knows she can outshoot irritating, cynical Tristan Gates, but the local bowmen’s society—the one he belongs to—refuses to allow women to compete. Spurred on by their rejection, Marigold decides to start a new society. Naturally, it has only one rule: no men.

Tristan Gates is used to Marigold Cartwell always getting her way, so he is far from surprised when she forms her own society. He knows how relentless she can be, something he learned firsthand facing her at the targets. But Tristan has enough worries of his own, what with his bachelor uncle falling in love with a fortune hunter. He has no time to entertain Marigold’s ambitions.

However, after a visit to the seashore ends in disaster—and scandal—Marigold and Tristan soon realize how little they know about each other. The strained tension between them quickly turns to simmering attraction, but an important archery competition looms ahead. Lines are drawn all around them, with Marigold and Tristan on opposite sides, and neither can afford to lose. Yet winning might be the very thing to tear them apart.

This is absolutely the best thing that Joanna Barker has ever written.

This is a TRUE enemies/rivals to lovers with a sweet slow burn realization that was oh so wonderful and completely realistic and believable. Enemies to lovers is rarely believable for me but this was right on target.

Marigold is determined to win...especially if that means beating her long time nemesis...Tristan. Marigold is also a thorn in Tristans side. Unfortunately for them, they are always forced together due to family ties and a love for the sport of archery.

I absolutely loved the push and pull of Tristan and Marigold. They genuinely have this "I can't stand you" attitude towards one another and so you really aren't quite sure how this relationship is going to grow into love. Their barbed remarks and quick wit in roasting one another is delightfully entertaining. I loved how it took drastic measures in order for them to see one another in a different light.

I cannot forget the wonderful family and friend dynamic to this story as well that also added wonderful depth. I am all about women making a stand for equality and Marigold was a force to reckon with and I adored how Tristan plays a part in that.

I would 100% go into this blind. I loved being surprised by every page and seeing them grow together as two people who might actually be able to make this work. The chemistry was off the charts..the first kiss scene is a scene to top all first kiss scenes and now I will accept NOTHING less. This is exactly what I crave in a sweeter historical romance --- all the fire and heat while still staying true to the genre.

This will absolutely be one of my favorite historical romance of the year....if not THE favorite. I will be pushing this on everyone and gifting it all year long because I need everyone to experience the magic of this book.

I am so proud of Joanna and her indie debut...I didn't know much I missed her books until I read this one BUT shes back...and she's better than ever!! Is it too early for a re-read? Asking for a friend.

4.5 stars, personally.

(here's a TikTok I made about this book--it was that good. 😌)

In the words of Princess Mia, “shut up” but I’d like to modify it and say “shut up, that was so cute!!?”

I had the highest hopes for this book. Yes, I had heard good things about it, but it was truly because it was a clean regency featuring archery that had my hopes so high. It felt appropriate to finally read this book after the Olympic archery events and just made me so much more excited to read it. Perfect timing with the highest excitement levels, if I say so myself. I’m honestly trying to talk myself of the ledge of going out and buying a bow, currently.

There’s something about that tagline in the cover “If you can’t join them…beat them.” that honestly I just feel to the deepest part of my bones and I’m not even that competitive. It just gets me going and I’m ready to win. 👀

For the very first bit in the beginning, they were petty towards the other—but it’s years of their juvenile rivalry, so I really can’t blame them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ they straight up antagonize the other and I have to say I enjoyed nearly every single bit of it. There’s banter and some of their comments missed the mark (pun intended) and felt a little juvenile, but a lot of them had me cracking up out loud. She has her moments where she’s an impossible little twerp, but there’s good in her heart if you dig down deep. As the book progresses, I enjoyed it more and more.

I’m not an enemies-to-lovers girlie, I just am not. But this book made me question that for a hot second.

They’ve been antagonizing each other for 12 years. The banter and wit volleying back-and-forth, it was like I was watching a metronome with great joy and attention.

I’m starting to think that a Cave of Feelings scene might be required for an enemies-to-lovers story. However, that said, this is probably the first Cave of Feelings scene I’ve read that I didn’t hate or roll my eyes so hard that they nearly got stuck. It worked perfectly into the story and their characters, built up to be a defining moment in their relationship. 👏🏻

Usually with this trope, I’m like “yeah right, they hate each other’s guys but they’re going to fall in love. Pssh. Okay. Fiction. 🙄” Oh, but not with this book. I was giddy and giggly as I saw the romance train coming down the tracks. He hard it so bad for her by the end—I kid you not, I was squeeing in utter delight. Is this why other readers like this trope? If so, I can understand now. I’m eating my words over here. 🏳

✨ Tropes ✨
No spice
regency
enemies to more
banter & wit
archery & competitions
summer aesthetics
forced proximity & ****spoilers****
kisses in the rain
Princess Diaries 2 vibes, okay??
He has it so bad for her by the end—I’m weak 😭

Micro-trope - they’re enemies but when someone is talking smack about her, he defends her in front of a group of people when she’s not there

I honestly would give this book 5 stars. It felt like a 5 star book to me. I am torn because some of the romance gave me butterflies which I usually try to avoid as that’s the warning that it was a bit too much romance for my tastes. So we’re going to compromise with a 4.5 rating.

I can’t wait to read the second book in the series which is about her good friend and her older brother—I am here for it!!

I’ve come to realize that I do not enjoy enemies who are enemies for the sole purpose of being enemies.

So instead of calling this enemies to lovers I’d maybe say children to (sort of) adults? These two were ‘enemies’ because they acted like eleven year olds for most of the book. I half expected them to pull each other’s hair. I didn’t understand why they were enemies and their romance was far-fetched.

The writing felt a little too contemporary and straightforward, especially since it was in first person, which is not my favorite thing in historical romance.

Maybe it’s because my previous book was amazing, the bar was too high and this one didn’t quite measure up.

Bookish friends, I hope you’re all happy with your smug smiles knowing I had no idea what was about to hit me. For that last half, I turned as feral romance reader as one can get without waking up the household with giddy squealing. It was a close call.

Everything I love about historical romance right here but within such a refreshing scenario of cliffside archery tournaments. The rivals rivaled, the banter bantered, the arbitrary societal strictures that would have completely accidental, innocent near-death experiences turned into total reputation annihilation…did their thing. Such a new favorite I self-sabotaged and absolutely slept too long on.

But we’ll start with our hero, of course. We have ourselves a delectably layered one. Mr. Tristan Gates, all capable, self-assured, commanding presence, an orphan/adopted heir turned ambitious self-made man that would rather wittle his own bow with a pen knife, and possibly even poke himself with it, than attend a social function. He’s a young’un but really he’s one of those where we’re just waiting for his age to catch up with his personality. And that is of a stoic, awkward grump with a protective streak that will just devastate you with how matter-of-fact he is with the “If this is important to you, it is to me” wielding. Seeing him fall was the absolute best because of the “The harder they fall” of it all. As Disney’s Belle admired, “And now he’s dear and so unsure” as his POV turns into a self-deprecating, self-sacrificing goner. I mean, thank goodness my kids sleep with white noise machines.

And Tristan may be a lot more than just a grump, but Miss Marigold Cartwell is not exactly sunshine either. She’s like a, both literal and figurative, straight-shooting, sardonic gale. In his own famous last words: “I did not fear a challenge, and Marigold was the very definition of the word.”
Again, one of my favorite aspects of historical: it’s not just about joining a dumb boys-only archery club. Even within her privilege, highly competent, ambitious, if not impetuous, women like Mari had very little of individual satisfaction and control, much less seeing their reaching to having it “all” fulfilled. I loved how this worked within those context limitations while still pushing just enough. A girl could and can have her sports club, her supportive community, her due recognition, her loving family, AND her rival-turned-ally-turned-champion-turned-love. Add swoon-your-bonnet-off gestures and kisses. Can’t forget those. Won’t forget those.

When we have such a tense “Will they get the words out?” build up to a resolution so fabulously full-circle, the squealing turns to cheering. I do love a couple you know will be lovingly bickering, one-upping and wagering into the here after. So happy I could stave off my stubborn ways enough to finally read this love story perfection.

Conter notes: Kissing Only. Mention of parent-loss grief.

I cannot say enough good things about this book! Honestly amazing! The writing is incredible. My favorite part would have to be the character development throughout the book. Character development is something I look forward to and this book did not disappoint. her story flowed, her descriptions were wonderfully visual (always appreciated by this reader), and she also beautifully captures the grief one can feel after the death of their parents. I thought the argument between the main characters will be too much, but I was wrong, and even better, her bickering with Tristan left me craving for more.

Marigold and Tristan are the best archers in town, they are rivals, and dislike each other since they were children, she's fierce, whip-smart, and wants to compete(team Marigold

I just want to make note of a fresh take on enemies to lovers this book conveys. The main characters have known each other since childhood and Tristen has a bit of a social awkwardness to Marigolds extrovert. Ahhhh the ending was just right! I give the book a 4.5* and round up as I thought the bickering went on just a tad too long but otherwise, I enjoyed the book. This is a clean romance but a slow build.

This book is absolutely adorable - I loved every single minute. It was charming and sweet and terribly swoon-worthy, and I really loved watching the story unfold. I'm such a sucker for enemies/rivals-to-lovers, and this one had me utterly entranced. I loved Tristan and Marigold - complete opposites yet they just worked. They had amazing chemistry right off the bat, and their witty back-and-forth had me in total stitches. Their romance developed so sweetly and at the perfect pace; it felt completely believable and I loved their interactions as they grew to know each other beyond competitions. They had so many sweet moments that had my romantic heart all aflutter. I really loved them individually, too, which made their romance that much better. They each had great character development that helped endear them to each other and to the reader. The plot was so unique and I loved the little twists. And the epilogue... y'all.♡

I can definitely see myself re-reading this again in the future, and I really hope we get a second book about a certain older brother and her best friend...

When I saw that this book had a decent number of reviews and still claimed a 4.92 star rating, I was surprised and intrigued. And now that I’ve finished it, I can understand why. This book had me grinning (there are truly some lines that made me laugh) and stilled into silence and just moved by the beautiful themes and tender moments. It’s a proud 4.75 ⭐️ from me! ☺️

Charming!

This was such a fun, much needed, escape! I thought Ms. Barker crafted a unique regency storyline with a fun enemies-to-lovers plot which was handled very well, the story was engaging and kept me turning the pages. Marigold and Tristan had fun banter and chemistry throughout. I'm glad I just jumped in without reading anything about the book, made it much more fun to be caught up in the story not knowing how it would unfold. Definitely one I would recommend to any regency fan!

Thank you to the author for an audiobook copy.
Reread Feb. 2023: Loved my reread!! Great audiobook. I do wish with dual POV there would have been dual narrators, but the narrator did a good job with all of the different voices for characters.

Thank you to the author for an eARC.

I AM A PUDDLE.

OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH.

That should be this review: NO NOTES.

I’ll drop a bit more though. I could not get enough of Marigold and Tristan. Marigold has some of the best type of character development that had me easily won over to her side as the book progressed. Add in a broody grump with a cinnamon roll soul in Tristan and these two reluctant lovers ARE A MATCH.

There were so many good moments. I would love to list them, but I also think you should go into reading this without those hints. Tristan and Marigold end up in some dicey situations that lead to their own consequences. And while not their initial choice, learning to communicate was something they both needed that really made my heart soar.

Also, the family????? On BOTH sides were loving and kind. Supportive and compassionate. I loved the parents, the siblings, the uncle. All of them. It was very refreshing to have this kind of support and it made the whole book.

All of the archery stuff was super cool to learn about too. I love archery and it was a unique dynamic to add into a regency romance. It’s the kind of thing I love about Barker’s books. They feel inventive to the genre and this is without a doubt my new favorite of hers.

Overall audience notes:
- Regency Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of parents (recounted), misogyny

This regency romance is swoony, clever, witty, and downright addicting.

This is a fresh and unique take on enemies to lovers and it completely drew me in within just a few pages and did not let me go until the very end.

Tristan and Marigold are fierce and determined rivals on the archery field and can barely tolerate each other's presence.

What occurs over the course of a few hundred pages is one of the most genuine romances I have ever read. The characters didn't just magically skip ahead to the HEA but the slow-burn tension as they slowly evolved from being true enemies to begrudging friends to something so much more was as dreamy as it was satisfying and it made this my favorite Joanna book ever.

The flirty dialogue and banter, on and off the archery field, was perfection, and holy hannah, that first kiss was one for the ages. And we won't even talk about the plot twists because you just need to go discover this stunning book for yourself.

If you have never read a Joanna Barker book, now is a perfect time, my friends. This is one you definitely do not want to miss!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

This was very charming! A sweet romance between two archery rivals. Marigold and Tristan had a beautiful slow burn romance with simmering chemistry.

I loved the fresh take on rivals to lovers here and especially liked the use of archery competitions and Marigold forming her own archery society after the male led one declines her entry because she's a woman.

This also had interesting family dynamics and side characters with great writing.

A fresh, charming, sweet and swoony take on historical romance and I adored it.

ANY😭THING😍 TO🥹 WIN👏🏻!!!!

Infinite stars, you guys. Just all of them.

I’m completely blown away by this book. Joanna Barker made my heart her target practice with this book and shot me right up with her arrows! 🎯💘🏹
This was just EVERYTHING I could want in an enemies to lovers Regency Romance!

Marigold and Tristan were such fantastic and relatable characters. I loved both of their POVs so much! I especially related to Tristan and some of his Darcy like tendencies when it came to socializing. 😂
@beccas_bibliophilia called them Arch(er)enemies to lovers and it’s the best thing I’ve ever heard. That’s 100% what they are! 👏🏻😍

The romance was of course… perfection.
The way they slowly come to know and understand each other better was done so beautifully. The tropes and circumstances that happen to make them come together was just insanely good. Even a trope I, for some reason, had no idea was even in this book!
I loved the healthy communication between them and how they changed for the better in the course of their relationship too!

The other part was the family relationships in this book! Absolutely stellar!!! They were so sweet and heartwarming to read. I feel like those close family dynamics can be more rare to come across sometimes.

I loved the competitions, the balls, the Lady Archers, the twists and turns, the kisses (some of the best kisses ever!), the epilogue… It was all just magical!
I can’t wait to read it again!

Also, can we get another book? Maybe one for Cora and a certain someone??? 🙏🏻🥺

Extra things I LOVED:

The banter! 😍
The cave in!
The billiards game
Tristan Trying
THE ROSE WITH THE BLUE RIBBON
Their talk at the Ball
THE BOW
Training the Ladies
Roving
The cliff scene pt. 1
The rain and the willow tree
The Lady Patroness’s Meeting
BEAUTIFUL POETIC IRONY
The cliff scene pt. 2
THE EPILOGUE

*Thank you so much, Joanna, for my eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own and genuine!*

Does anybody else see archery and immediately think about Chris Pine teaching Anne Hathaway how to shoot a flaming arrow through a small golden hoop or am I just really showing my age here?

✨ 𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 ✨ B̷O̷R̷R̷O̷W̷ B̷Y̷P̷A̷S̷S̷

anywhooooooo - I read this one on the recommendation of a ton of people through bookstagram and I am so happy to say that it did not disappoint! It has a lot of things going for it - good characters, an engaging plot, comeuppance of a stupid character (STUPID), sibling joviality, female archery clubs (!!) - but all of that aside, this was such an absolute FUN enemies to lovers / marriage of convenience / grump v sunshine romance and I was HERE for it.

It was so nice to see Tristan and Marigold spar prior to their hasty engagement (is it absolutely ridiculous that he had to propose to her under the circumstances he did? Yes. Is it probably fairly accurate for the time period? Also, unfortunately, yes.) But what was even better than their initial verbal sparring is watching them get to know one another, to not only see one another's faults but to look behind them and try to understand.

(It also really helped that the verbal sparring continues throughout, because a healthy relationship full of good natured ribbing is one of my absolute favorite things)

This is one that I would definitely recommend if you're looking for a Regency Romance (esp if you want closed door!). Now if you'll excuse me I either need to acquire the rest of Joanna Barker's books OR watch Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement and then acquire the rest of Joanna Barker's books.

Don't you just love a good enemies-to-lovers when the MCs actually both hate each other at the beginning? Especially when the author seamlessly transitions that hate to love? I can't imagine loving an enemy like that but maybe that's why these stories are so special.
Marigold and Tristan are rivals at sport and disdainful neighbors otherwise. She gets so much joy out of beating him at archery and he finds her to be an utter nuisance. Neither understands why everyone else doesn't agree. Well except a certain baron, but who cares about him? Marigold starts her own archery society and things come to a bit of a boil after she's trapped with Tristan. Alone. For hours. Say it isn't so!
I love Joanna's writing and find myself wrapped up in her regencies from the hook. This second half especially had my heart swelling like the Grinch because of a certain scene in the rain that was absolutely perfect in every way. And I really hope more in this setting are forthcoming. 🤞🤞
Thank you to the author for the #gifted copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Wonderful

This is my second book by the author. I absolutely enjoyed this one as much as the first, though it was different. Less angst. This is an enemies to lovers story - not my favorite trope - but it was done so well. Clean romance. It is also first person, which is very unusual for historical romance. One chapter will be from the perspective of Marigold, the heroine. The next chapter will be from the perspective of Tristan Gates, her nemesis and our hero. It was witty and emotionally engaging. I highly recommend! I usually rely on my local library, freebies, arcs, and gifts. This one was on sale for $0.99 so I decided to pick it up. I am ever so glad I did.

This was my surprise 'read' for December, 2023. Though archery is neither my favorite sport nor subject, I thoroughly enjoyed this slow-burn collision of opposites.

Tristan and Marigold had known each other since childhood and had managed to get on each other's last nerve more than once. Marigold loves people, the more the merrier. She also loves a bit of competition.

In turn, Tristan loves the quiet, order and daily events to move along smoothly. They are both archers and the best in their field. Naturally, this becomes a thorn in Marigold's side. The fun part is watching their relationship change. I will just say the word cave.

I don't want to say too much more but if you have been bored with the latest HRs, are looking for a different kind of romance and don't mind 'kisses only', consider reading A Game of Hearts.

My goodness, the rivalry between these two is intense! Especially on Marigold's side, perhaps because she feels she has more to prove. Tristan's demeanor is more annoyed and dismissive, which of course is infuriating to Marigold. I wondered how they would ever overcome it, but sure enough, the author skillfully maneuvered them into situations where their true personalities behind the walls are revealed, and they share moments of connection full of wit, humor, and emotion. Such a fun read! I loved the ladies of the neighborhood banding together with Marigold, and the lessons both she and Tristan learn about themselves and each other. The chemistry between them grows steadily stronger, and I loved their romance! It's one of my favorites of the year for sure, and one I will definitely be reading again for the sheer pleasure of it!

2.5⭐️ This didn’t work for me. I was ready to DNF at any moment during the first 40%, but kept going because there were so many fans of this story. Like the happy little boy said while digging through a mountain of manure, “There’s got to be a pony in here!”

It did get better, but I was never able to completely shake off the poor first impression Mari and Tristan’s sniping made on me. Then, there was the obsession with archery. So much talk—on and on and on. There should be a law banning hobbyist jargon such as bow and arrow (188 and 157 times, respectively) from historical romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love archery. Maybe it was the lack of poetry when describing the soaring trajectory and satisfying bite of the arrow deadly projectile sinking into the target that irked me.

Anyway, the couple’s growing romance did improve and the epilogue was doggone sweet.

"Anything to win."

Marigold is very competitive, especially in the game of archery but not all the men are tolerant of her presence which doesn't stop her, she is very determined to beat her arch-rival, Tristan. Marigold and Tristian don't really know each other, even though they have lived in the same neighborhood for ten years, but they do know that they don't like each other.

I really liked A Game of Hearts but there isn't a Joanna Barker book that I haven't liked. As for the characters, I liked that the chapters alternated between Marigold's and Tristan's POV, I didn't really like Marigold very much in the beginning but, my viewpoint was very much in line with how Tristan saw her in the beginning. This was a fun and enjoyable read.

I missed joining the launch group for this book and all the early reviews and praise of it had me seriously FOMOing so when it released on Monday I quickly got it from KU and started reading.

It quickly captured my interest and honestly - I don’t think I can say anything new that hasn’t already been said about this phenomenal book but I loved it! The rivals to lovers, the wit and banter and the slow burn romance! Plus the focus of archery and wagers! Seriously it’s perfect and I just want more of this book and series! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

The love story of these two arch(er)nemeses has me OBSESSED 🏹

I’m a big Joanna Barker fan, but this one might just take the cake.

Tristan and Marigold have the best kissing scene that Joanna has ever written, possibly the best one to ever exist.

Perfectly genuine. Swoon-worthy. Read it now.

“I know I was not your first choice, or even your hundredth. But you are mine, Marigold. My first and only choice. And I’ll choose you every day, without pause, for the rest of my life.”

YALL I LOVED IT. I’ve been wanting something with a fresh feel in the regency romance department and THIS WAS EXACTLY IT 🤩 This is also a book where the dual POV is done well! Each character felt soooo unique and real. I loved the side plots that happened, and the different turns the story took….ESPECIALLY A CERTAIN TWIST which is a trope that, if done well, is one of my favorites. AND IT WAS DONE WELL, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. IT WAS DONE WELL INDEED 👏🏼

Literally cannot say enough praise about this book. Definitely a new favorite, and honestly…I think it’s Joanna’s best book so far 🤩👏🏼

While I did receive an advanced copy from the author (thanks Joanna!), all thoughts are my honest opinions.

Read it for the:
- Rivals to lovers
- Grump/Sunshine
- romantic tension
- slow burn
- Well-paced relationship
- Endearing side-characters
- pride and prejudice 2005 vibes
- Archery

I'm gone for this book. Everyone needs to read it. Joanna Barker can do no wrong. That pretty much sums up my feelings, but if you need further convincing: keep reading below.

What I appreciated the most in this story (other than the amazing romance that developed between Tristian and Marigold, but more on that in a bit) was the character growth. Tristan and Marigold begin the story as rivals in every sense of the word. They came from two different households and had completely different viewpoints, personalities, and opinions. The only thing that could be counted as a similarity was their competitive natures and mutual respect for each other's skill in archery-and perhaps a bit of pride. But as the story progressed, it was truly amazing to see how they began to understand one another. Their interactions with each other affected how they moved and proceeded with the society they lived in. They found a level of humility and confidence in themselves. I loved both characters!

The romance between Tristian and Marigold was one with a solid base formed on a hard-won trust. I liked how they had to work from being rivals to becoming friends, more. The chemistry was real. There was an attraction that built steadily between them that had the sparks flying. Seriously, I could not wait for them to kiss, and when they did-the wait was worth it. Romantic tension at its finest.

Plot-wise- this was an entertaining read from start to finish! The politics of archery, family loyalties, and forming true friendships kept the pages turning. The side characters, even the villainous ones, were intriguing and layed. They added some interesting conflicting and supportive aspects that only added to Tristan and Marigold's story. Cora and Olivier were my favorites (unrequited love. Yes. I approve, and fully support their own story)! I loved the light-hearted tone of the book and that happy ending? Still not over it.

The writing and romance were just so good! A new favorite and re-read for sure.

Reread May 2024: I literally dream about Tristan and Marigold. I am obsessed with them.

Reread July 2023: ❤️ Anything to win ❤️

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)

Marigold Cartwell is one of the best archers there is, but she's never been allowed to join the men's only Sandcliffe Bowmen archery club. After losing once again to the Bowmen's top archer- Tristan Gates- she decides to start her own group just for women and secure a place for them in one of the biggest archery competitions. But the founder of the Bowmen will not be outdone by Marigold and forces her into a seemingly impossible bet that forces her to risk everything. And when she finds herself in a compromising position with Tristan, her social standing is also put in jeopardy. Now Marigold must partner with the man she always considered her rival. Can her heart and her reputation as an archer survive what lies ahead?

THE HYPE IS REAL!!!! I've held off on historical romance for awhile now, but when Bookstagram finally wore me down I knew this book needed to be at the top of my list. And I'm so glad I gave it a chance! From the very first chapter I was intrigued by the archery element and the rivalry between Marigold and Tristan. The chemistry between them was simmering beneath their teasing banter, and when the book hit the halfway point it exploded with a romance that won my heart. The second half was everything!!! Marigold was brave, determined, and fiery while Tristan was serious and reserved but delivered the best romantic gestures to show his love for Marigold. It was enemies to lovers and opposites attract at its finest. I especially appreciated the communication between these two. There were several times when miscommunication could have been an issue, but instead they confronted things head on and trusted one another. My only request? Can we pretty please get Cora's story next? I can't be the only one dying to know if she gets a certain someone's attention. Now, please excuse me while I add all of Joanna Barker's books to my TBR and daydream about Marigold and Tristan until the end of time 😍

I do want to support newish authors but this one was just so so. First person narration in historical romances is very difficult to pull off and dual first person narration more so. To remain linguistically authentic in both the external and internal dialogues takes quite a skillful writer who has intensively studied the language of the targeted time period. The language in this book feels relatively modern.

I also found myself not caring too much about the protagonists after a while. I just didn't get why Tristan was such a cynical and emotionally aloof person. Yes he was orphaned but he grew up in comfort under the watchful and doting eyes of his uncle. He was also petulant and insecure in his instant distrust of his uncle's new love interest. He didn't want to have to share his uncle. Really, child? Marigold too had it all and did not want for anything except to be allowed to compete with the men in archery. I really didn't understand her desperation to join the Baron's archery club even after she had formed her own, when the man himself was so detestable and bent on sabotaging her every step of the way. Why was she so desperate for the public recognition of her skills? It's hardly going to change the world. Just practise and enjoy the sport with friends and family. If she wanted a competition against her main rival, Tristan, she could challenge him privately anytime.

This was too NA for ancient me.

I had zero expectations going into this book and was so pleasantly surprised. Marigold and Tristan are amazing. Childhood rivals slow-burn with great banter. I will definitely read more books by this author, and so should you all

It left a happy smile on my lips…

From enemies to lovers, but what a brilliant way to make it so. Joanna Barker, Esther Hatch have easily become a favorite of mine.

I love how the sizzling moments of the story make my pulse trip, but it is still clean closed-door romance. Blast, I couldn’t stop since I started and I am already excited for the second book. If I didn’t enjoy writing my own books, I’d be happily reading for days and days. Sleep is overrated anyway. 😬
