Totally cute! Some people read trashy romance novels. I read manga that is for teenagers.

Originally posted here on Anime Radius and here on Yaoi Radius.

The first volume of Flower in a Storm was an introduction into the always hectic world of one Riko Kunimi, a high school girl who insists she's an average teen when in fact she has the physical skills and stamina of a fleet of ninjas. She never expects to fall in love, especially since her first true love dumped her for being so different. That's when young millionaire heir Ran Tachibana drops like a bomb into her life, telling her that she is now his. Naturally, Ran rebels against this crazy Casanova's advances time after time, always finding herself an unwilling participant in his daily adventures (which more than often involved dodging assassination attempts against his life). Somehow, without seeming rushed in her storytelling, manga-ka Takagi showed Riko slowly falling for Ran's charms in an actual believable way - and now with the second and final volume, we get to see if Riko will actually realize what her feelings mean in time for Ran to hear her. With more death threats and assassins than normal going after Ran, Riko might want to realize it a little sooner though . . .

Ran and Riko seem like an unlikely couple as ever. They are constantly fighting and getting into squabbles; Riko's physical strength and class difference makes her feel estranged from Ran's world and Ran's constant romantic (and yet oddly endearing) advances make him more than just a minor irritant in Riko's daily life. But as the story advances, we see that Ran and Riko is actually not only one of the oddest couples in modern shoujo history but a couple that, after volume two, makes a lot of sense. Riko is a girl struggling to accept herself as someone who is not seen as 'normal' by society; Ran is someone who falls in love with Riko at first sight and thinks her physical feats of strength are beautiful. He accepts and loves Riko for who she is and cannot help but pour his affections on her in the most dorky and extravagant ways. In turn, Riko grows fond of Ran's odd behavior and protective of him when he is threatened by assassins (which is a lot) and her affections soon grow to the point that the idea of living without Ran's vibrant present is too sad to bear. The story of their romance is a delight to read for all shoujo fans and I can't see anyone not falling in love with Riko and Ran by the end of this volume, especially after the short Bonus Storm' chapter, which is simply too darn cute for words.

The art isn't the great highlight of Flower in a Storm, although it can be very pretty at times and very effective during the more flashy scenes between Ran and Riko. What is this volume's greatest highlights are the action and the humor. There are guns and helicopters and explosions and motorcycles and ninjas and fist fights and lots of other exciting things, including a very dramatic life-and-death struggle involving Riko and Ran and the latest psychotic rich man trying to kill him this time. Plus, there's more of everyone's favorite arrogant ginger gunman - who still doesn't get a proper name, arrgh! Not only is this a shoujo brimming with excitement, it also contains much needed moments of levity (especially considering how the series dances dangerously close to a tragic romantic series in the vein of Sand Chronicles or We Were There). As usual, Ran's constant showering of outlandish gifts upon the unfortunate and unreceptive Riko is always a source for smiles while reading. Then there is the end of the Ran's Fiancee 'Arc' in which Riko takes down the malicious Rinko in her own typical reckless manner - and with a spectacular jump from a high-up open school window.

As the two volume Flower in a Storm winds to an end, I think many if not most of its fans will be pleased by the way it concludes. It is a perfect hybrid of romance and drama that is pretty astonishing to see in a series so short. Takagi really needs more of her manga available to the English language audience, if this is any testament to her skills as a shoujo manga-ka. This manga is one that definitely deserves a place on any fan's bookshelves.

This was a good volume!

I was a little bummed that it didn't have the same wild shenanigans as the previous volume, but I still enjoyed reading the sequel! We see a different side of Ran that gives him a lot more depth and also made my heart strings be pulled on a little bit.

And Riko! I LOVED seeing her finally come to terms with her feelings! I thought the ending was really fitting, but goodness I didn't expect to almost cry! Thankful for the bonus chapter because it helped stitched my heart together after that very compelling ending!

I'm still unsure why this series is 16+. It didn't seem like it and the only thing I can guess is that one of the characters in this volume has very low cut shirts and skirts? (She only makes an appearance in this volume.) She's the only thing I feel that is one step above 13+ manga so that's something to be aware of.

Overall, I really enjoyed this two-volume series! It was a lot of fun and just enjoyed myself (even if this volume was deeper than the first and not nearly as funny). Would definitely recommend to those who are just looking for a fun story without concern of how "realistic" scenes are and that gradually gets a little deeper.

Glad I read this!

This one was a bit more mild. Ran felt more realistic (slightly) and Riko starts to realize her feelings. Ran's father is something else!! And not in a good way. I kept hoping to get to know their classmates better or his guards/staff but that doesn't really happen. It is a very single direction series. A decent short series but nothing special in the end. I will be passing on both volumes to someone else. Fun for a one time read but not worth re-visiting.

Um...what the heck happened here? Yet again, the art is super pretty, but the story is really, really choppy and things just happen way too quickly to make much sense. I liked the characters, but I feel like the story definitely needed another two or three volumes to really work well--there just wasn't nearly enough depth to Ran and Riko's relationship, and then the whole weird terrorist kidnapping plotline came out of nowhere, and the ending is really unclear. I'd be interested to see what Takagi could do with a longer series though; hopefully the next one will be a little more fully realized.

**Contains Spoilers**

The second volume begins with the revelation of Ran's fiancee chosen by his family, not him. Riko gets jealous and realises her feelings towards Ran though she has no intention of confessing to him because of his ego and his lovey-dovey nature. Slowly, Riko begins to treasure the things Ran does for her. They spend Christmas together and that chapter (chapter 6) was my favourite, how she told him her feelings and Ran fell unconscious because of his damn fever and didn't remember anything after he got up ~ why does this always happen?! Nevertheless, it was cute! <3

The assassin and Chiaki - both the character introductions were damn funny and fitted well ~ Loved it! Chiaki tells Ran how being Riko being his life partner would bring hurt, pain and criticisms to Riko, Ran asks frankly from Riko to go away as this is the last chance he is giving her and she decides to stay . Kawaiiiiii!

Loved the twist how Ran was kidnapped and his father gave up search on him but Riko and Ran's friends along with the assassin (which was VERY surprising but endearing when found out that Ran's father had hired him to help them out), they rescue Ran.

The extra story at the end was very boring. I didn't like it but I am not decreasing the rating just because of that because it's not even related to Riko and Ran. The last scene where Ran and Riko in their groom and bridal dresses respectively are running and escaping from the assassin was an excellent ending - couldn't have been better for the couple! XD

Riko Kunimi is a girl with superhuman strength, desperately trying to seem as normal as possible. She wants a normal high school experience but when Ran Tachibana, one of the richest and most powerful teenager in Japan, falls in love with her in first sight, Riko's life turns chaotic as they date. The more time Riko spends with Ran, the more aware she becomes of the differences between them and she can't help but wonder if they'll last.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Book 2 is a little bit more serious as Riko processes the differences between the two but it's still a fun read.
The pacing was a little off near the end, I think it was because Takagi was trying to wrap things up quickly. The little epilogue near the end was cute.

this was fine at best. there was one (1) cute moment (the christmas party scene) but other than that, it was just mediocre writing and bland artwork. while I appreciate that this is just a two volume series, it also didn't leave room for much depth in the characters/plot and ultimately that brought down the quality of the story.

however, I loved that the ending could've gone a very traditional route, but instead totally flipped it around and did the exact opposite.

This was a cute conclusion for the "Flower in a Storm" series! The illustrations were beautiful, and the crazy action was present yet again, from the very first page onwards. I enjoyed this series! It was a quick and cute little series. I also very much enjoyed the short story bonus chapters included at the very end of the manga, too. All in all, this is a unique two volume manga series that anyone who is a fan of silly high school romances would enjoy!

The story felt rushed to completion, and then seemed unbelievable just to have "high stakes". Yes, unbelievable even in this story of stretching the imagination. I wanted to like it more but I felt in the two short volumes I never really got to know the characters enough to care about the end that they gave.

The series is too short for the characters and plot to be well-defined. The "hero" refuses to take no for an answer and the "heroine," despite her supernatural strength, spends the whole series crying. I was hoping for a Hana Yori Dango series, but just spent the whole time thinking, "Really?!"

The first volume is fun but the second meh. The plot is kinda repetitive. Would be good if the author make it into a long series which tells more in depth about every character. I think Ran’s parents are so interesting & I would like to know they story and how they met

There was absolutely no time to become invested in this romance. The characters moved too fast with one another and the plot just kept jumping around illogically.

A cute and happy ending. I wish the story itself had been a little bit longer because I would have liked to see the characters fleshed out a little bit more. But not bad overall.

This was more entertaining to me than the first volume, because the romance was not so one-sided. The ending is a little insane???

Once again, I liked the bonus story more than the series itself.

Impressions:
The somewhat wacky adventures of Riko and Ran made me smile. The guy is a complete show off! He appears everyday for class on board of an helicopter as if it's a perfectly normal way of coming...

It's a character in the line of King Tamaki in "Ouran High School Host Club ... A handsome, spoiled, manipulative and very intelligent brat. But the exuberance part hides a faithful and lonely boy on whom the person he cares about can always counted on. Ran is also similar in some aspects to Kei Takishima (and Hikari spirit ran in Riko too!) in the manga "Special A S.A Class"

Like Kei, Ran must support significant professional responsibilities by being the heir of a very prestigious family. So many people try to harm him too.
I enjoyed that the story is always conducted in a tone of humor and grotesque scenes with many car chases and assassination attempts. It's lively!

Yet behind laughter facade, there are real values that are highlighted by the drawings of Tagaki Shiegeyoshi. Through Riko, a girl who wants to be "ordinary" and not be noticed, the author discusses tolerance and acceptance of differences.

Riko confessed once in the past to a guy and has been badly rejected because of her gift. She still suffers. So she has decided that to be happy she has to change and be normal. But Ran sees her as the incredible girl she is with her qualities and defects. So, thanks to his support, she starts to flourish. The perseverance of Ran is then rewarded.
The message is positive: never give up but always fight for what you really truly want…

Be and remain true to yourself are the subtle themes covered by drawings of outstretched hands. Ditto for the understanding of the importance of not being alone and shut on itself through scenes of solidarity and forgiveness are highlighted.
I liked the result even if it is true that sometimes the drawings are a bit light.

A two-volume manga very enjoyable

Reads R to L (Japanese Style). Love is like a storm. Final Volume Ran's romantic overtures are starting to work on Riko--but the ordinary life she's yearned for is not in the picture. A hotel heiress claiming to be Ran's fiancee is just the beginning of another dangerous storm of trouble...

This manga was amazing, touched my heart. I'm so jealous of Riko she has an amazing out of this world guy-even if its not real.a woman could dream right? The ending kind of confused me, but after some researching and putting the pieces together-I believe the ending was pretty cute.

kokonoe rinko was picked from Ran's parents to be Ran's candidate fiance. She is greedy for Ran's money so she'll go as far as to take Ran's document and copy his signature for the marriage document. No worries though, Riko saves the day and rips the document.
Riko goes to a party with Ran, and realizes that they come from two different worlds. She finds out his Christmas present to her is a ring, she accepts the ring. Her present she got for him was stepped on and broke, but she ended up putting it on Ran's Christmas tree.
Riko is seen as a burden to Ran's status, so that's a huge pressure on her, and Ran knows that one day he will have to let Riko go since he doesn't want her to burden everyone's thoughts and pressures.
Ran sacrifices himself up to the assasins, and Ra's father doesn't care about Ran enough to try to save him. Its up to Riko and the bodyguards to save Ran.
In the endRiko lets go of his hand cause she can't support 2 people, and She thinks he's dead but the next day he shows up, and they get married.

A nechápu, proč anglické vydání změnilo obrázek u druhého volumka. Ten v japonské verzi vypadal lépe. Obálky bych ale i přes tyto vady hodnotila spíše kladně.

This short series had a lot going for it: a stylish and gallant hero, a strong and no-nonsense heroine, and some of the prettiest art that I've seen in years. It's just too bad that the story was too disjointed for me to give it anything beyond a two-star rating.

I think it had a lot to do with the publication schedule for this particular series: LaLa DX is only published every other month, unlike its sister magazines which are published every month or even twice per month. The pacing and the continuous reintroduction of its central characters were affected by this. I never felt emotionally connected to either Ran or Riko; sure, if they were involved in an action scene, it looked amazing, but when they got to scenes that were supposed to have more gravitas, I wasn't interested.

Riko didn't seem interested either. All throughout the first volume and partway through the second, it was all that she could do to avoid Ran. Then, either the author realized that she was supposed to end her series so that's why we have a 180-degree change of heart. I, as the reader, am now supposed to believe that she is so attracted to Ran that she can't even enjoy a party without having him by her side the whole time? This behavior, from a girl who would jump off windows to escape him?

If you're the type who can turn your brain off for a couple of volumes, then maybe you'll be able to enjoy this series more than I did.

This has got to be the most romantic/funny manga book I've read. Its about this high school girl named Riku and she gets proposed to, by a new classmate named Ran. Crazy, rite? What kind of guy goes up to you and proposes to you? And it was in school! Anyways, (laughs) Ran is NOT taking no for answer. See, wat I mean by crazy? So bascically Riku is kinda stuck with him, but she develops feelings for him. And it turns out that he is the prince of The Imperial Family, but thats not why Riku loves Ran. Cuz, he is sweet, romantic, and well, a Lady Killer.(Laughs)Kidding, but is exquiste at being romantic and so sweet. But well, that is wat happens in the first book, just thought I'd give a lil flash back. But in the second book, it just basically tells you how much Riku and Ran love each other and that it takes more than saying "I love u" to your true love. It even goes to more dractic measures.Flower in a Storm

Again with the freaking unnecessary helplessness from Riko!!! Overall the story is one I loved reading, but the ending was really confusing. So they didn't get married in the end? Why not? I hope I'm not the only one who was confused by that. I feel like the ending was rushed and just stuck there to finish it. I love the artwork, but just a disappointing ending...

I expected much more from this volume, but maybe I wished for too much. I'll boost it up from the original three stars I was going to give to four, just because of how much I LOVED Ran's character and the artwork. I have mixed feelings about my overall love/hate for this book since there are parts I literally LOVED.
