I love historical fiction and even more when I don't know about the person the story is about. Lady Dorothy Stafford was one of Queen Elizabeth I ladies and her life was ordinary but then again not. She was determined to make the best she could with what life had dealt her, making her an early widow with children and no money. She was tenacious about not getting married again and having to rely upon a man. Dorothy Stafford became a loyal and high ranking confidante in Elizabeth's court.

It's hard to imagine a more exciting place for a woman to be than in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. We are allowed to watch through the eyes of Lady Dorothy Stafford, a widow when she becomes a lady-in-waiting in order to support her family. This book is set in the years 1558-1575 which were tumultuous and exciting for Elizabeth. She was relentlessly pressured to marry and provide an heir by the male advisors who surrounded her.

I was unaware of the existence of Lady Dorothy Stafford, who eventually became Mistress of the Robes, making her a powerful woman at court. It's interesting that she was a young widow with children but chose not to remarry, a rarity in those times but perfect to use for this story. For both Dorothy & Elizabeth, it's clear that they saw marriage as a loss, not a gain and both were masterful in avoiding it. Anne Bailey is brilliant at bringing to life the stories of women who lived long ago but deserve to be remembered. Whenever she publishes a new book, I know I am in for a delicious read. I highly recommend this Tudor treat!
