Prepare for exercising your facial muscles. There will be frowns, grimaces and eye-rolling. But this book has a lot of positive reviews, so I guess others experienced something else. I just didn’t like the plot, with a woman trapped in the basement and a husband who wants to kill her, trying to convince his wife this is the rational thing to do. Not for me, unfortunately.

Okay, the whole idea of this novel is ludicrous, soooooooooo I should have known it would be whack!

I chose this Kindle Unlimited because it was a very short read (around 200 pages). I will say the pace was quick and headed straight into "train wreck" territory!

If you are looking for an afternoon distraction and don't mind an OTT plot, this one was readable.

This was my first reading experience with Kiersten Modglin. I thought the quality of her writing was top notch, and this was a fun plot to work with. She was able to keep this nonstop uneasy atmosphere, seasoned with a bit of impending doom. And there was a lot of disastrous happenings throughout, so that aspect of the story did not disappoint. The characters could have used some additional depth, but I think that may just be a personal preference. I think that the author really kept a lot of Andi and Spencer's backgrounds brief, to really drive home the entire concept that they had a 'perfect' little life together, and then all of a sudden it wasn't. Now my other critique is that I felt the story became a bit too complicated for itself. The initial concept, by itself, was more than enough material to work with, and I felt the entire angle with Kaylee came across as just a bit too much. Not that I think any of it wasn't written very well, which it all was, however I just like a bit more simplicity when it comes to an already established and self-sufficient premise like this. But overall, I enjoyed my time with this story and look forward to seeing more of Kiersten Modglin's offerings.

Genre ~ domestic thriller

Page Count ~ 204
Audio length ~ 4 hours 32 minutes
Narrators ~ Natalie Naudus, Scott Brick, Jesse Vilinsky ~ happy with their performance

Andi comes home early and Spencer is telling her not to go in the basement. What do you do when someone tells you not to do something? Well my nosy butt would probably crack my head falling down the stairs because I couldn't get down there fast enough to see what's happening.

Was there a twist? Sure was, but it has to do with my spoiler above, so look at your own risk. Also, I'm pretty sure I would not help my hub commit a crime like that after I found out he was cheating on me...maybe if he wasn't, who knows, jk I don't plan to commit any crimes.
Andi makes some terrible choices from the beginning until the very end, but it's for her kids blah blah. And it wasn't very motherly of Heidi to not just hightail it to the police!!

Regarding my spoiler again ~ I wonder if I would feel differently if this was not my daughters age, or if I was not a mother at all? IDK, but at this point in my life I am just not the target audience for that crap. Can we give him a little slack because of where they met and the assumptions made? That'd be a big fat negative from me.

Luckily I was able to listen at 3x speed. It was super quick and fast paced, but not one character was likable, wait, maybe Andi's kids since they weren't a big part of the story. What was up with that ending, ugh!

Andi Edwards comes home one day to discover her husband Spencer has a shocking secret in their basement. Will she trust the man she loves? I enjoyed this fast-paced suspense story, even if it was a bit unpleasant at times. Spencer was a total creep. And I didn’t care for Andi, sticking by her man, no matter what. There weren’t many likable characters in this book, except Andi’s friend, Jo. But I still found it an interesting, and captivating read.

Kiersten Modglin’s books are always fast paced and full of twists and turns and this was no exception. I will admit I was struggling a little in the beginning to really care about any of the characters, but as secrets were revealed I found the one I could root for. This book was so quick and exciting with twists I can’t even really talk much about the plot without giving everything away. If you are looking for a quick read that will keep you on the edge of your seat with the suspense pick this one up, you won’t be disappointed.

This isn't my first ride on the Kiersten Modglin crazy train. I expected the plot to be over the top and it didn't disappoint. I thought I knew exactly where the story was going, but the final twist was jaw-dropping. The ending bumped my rating from two to three stars. The plot was fast-paced and entertaining. The narration added intensity and a sense of foreboding. Thank you, NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for my audiobook. ⭐⭐⭐

3.5★ Another super bingy read, coming in at just over 5 hours on audio. It had a lot of the usual KMod vibes, but just didn’t keep my attention the same way her previous books have. The pacing felt a bit uneven and the overall story felt like one she’s done before. That said, if you are in need of a good, quick popcorn thriller, I’d say to give this a try.

Thank you Dreamscape Media for the advanced listening copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book was a fine lesson in trying not to lie or at least do not bringing that lie home with you!.

Andi comes home one day from her teaching job to find a big surprise in her basement. Her husband, Spencer, who she is devoted to, has brought something home which he doesn't want her to know about, and yet she does.

It's a big revelation and as she tries to cope with its significance, she learns more about what a cad her beloved husband and what will be the repercussions if the big lie gets out.

It's a case of who do you trust or do you just walk away and try to forget, give up your comfortable life, or become a party to Spencer's plan?

I enjoyed this book that I was able to listen to. It was fast paced and held my attention right up to the very end with its conclusion.

Thanks you to Kiersten Modglin, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for the ability to listen to this story which already published in early Ma.

Andi arrives home and does not know where her husband Spencer is. When she does see him, he looks more than a bit disheveled. Then she hears something in the basement and he gives her an edict: “Don’t go down there”. That’s fine by Andi, because the basement is her least favorite part of their house. But at least she wants answers from Spencer. In fact, she deserves an answer from him and she wants it immediately.

Most people act on their gut instinct. Andi sensed something was wrong almost from the moment she walked in the door, and after going room by room looking for Spencer, and then for him to tell her to not go in the basement, the question is, will she listen to her husband or how far will she go when it comes to finding out for herself what is really going on? Having always been one to catastrophize, Andi expects the worst.

In this exciting domestic thriller by Kiersten Modglin, the twists are many. They are shocking. They are compelling. It was impossible not to connect with Andi as she struggled to deal with what was facing her. I was fully drawn into the story and literally stayed in my seat and kept tapping the screen of my Kindle until I got to the shocking ending. In fact, if you pick up this latest book by this amazing author, make sure that you have a few hours in your schedule clear because you will not want to put this book down either.

Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I am so conflicted as I write this review. When I read the synopsis for DON’T GO DOWN THERE, I was super excited to start reading it, as I am any of her books. But after finishing it, I felt there was something missing. I really, really love Kiersten Modglin books— they draw you in from the beginning, hold tight throughout, and leave you wondering how you didn’t see those twists coming. And the ride to get there is normally fraught with suspense and edge-of-your-seat vibes. But this book did not quite hit the mark for me, sadly.

For starters, the book seemed too short. When the end did come, I thought I must have missed something. There wasn’t as much character development as I would have expected, and I didn’t feel as invested in our main characters’ lives as I usually do. And try as I might, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around why Andi kept making the decisions she did once she discovered what was in the basement, especially in light of Spencer’s ever-growing suspicious behavior.

Still, I was entertained and read it in one sitting. The book kept me quickly turning the pages because I really wanted to know how it would all end. The ending just came a little too quickly, and wasn’t as satisfying as I hoped it would be. But if you enjoy her books, definitely add this to your TBR list. It may not be my favorite of hers, but I still love her writing, her imagination, and her twists! I’ll keep reading for sure!! :)

Don't Go Down There just wasn't my favorite Kiersten Modglin book. It had a wonderful premise and storyline, but it just didn't make it there for me.

I loved the idea of a woman finding her husband's mistress trapped in their basement and trying to decide what to do from there.

The characters fell flat, in my opinion, and just didn't have the development I've come to expect.

Still, though, I can't wait to see if the next Kiersten Modglin book reaches the 5-star point for me.

~ Quick Summary ~

Andi discovers her husband’s chilling secret in the basement and she needs to decide whether to help protect her family or let Spencer pay for his sins and destroy their lives.

~ Pick this up if you enjoy/don’t mind the following ~

📖 Quick and easy read (169 pages)

🤯 You’re in it for the twist and turns only

🤼 Unlikeable characters

⛔ No character development

~ Thoughts ~

Considering Andi was painted as a very normal suburban and devoted wife, I couldn’t believe her actions.

This is personal preference but this book was too short. It felt like the first and last third of the story was missing. I wish there was more around the development of the characters themselves because the build up could have helped make Andi’s actions more believable. And the ending felt abrupt as we don’t know what happens to the characters next.

Thanks to Dreamscape and Netgalley for the Audio ARC.

Public safety alert: Before you pick this book up, you might need a neck brace and know reading this book will result in stiff muscles as this is a roller coaster of a ride! Juicy, misleading, and full of lies and deceit, what more can you want in a domestic thriller. My head is still spinning from that ending, which I would have never expected it!

Short but good suspense.
Andy, Spencers wife, arrives home to hear something in the basement.
Not something but someone.
Spencer tells Andy it's a woman. A woman he'd been having an affair with, and he can't let her out of the basement after she threatened to expose him.
The story gets more twisted from there. Lots of coincidences . Too many if you ask me.
The ending was quite shocking with what's revealed.

First, this book requires a degree of suspension of disbelief. If you don't go along with the initial premise, you're going to have a bad time. Thankfully I was looking to be entertained and was willing to go along for the ride.

The fun of this book comes from asking the question… what would you do in this woman's shoes? I enjoyed mulling over the situation, even though it was a touch ridiculous.

I felt the story was well plotted in a small novella package. I enjoyed getting pulled along on this narrative and would recommend it to readers looking for a fun time.

Disclaimer I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

The twists this woman writes never stop shocking me! You will not be able to guess what happens or be able to put this one down! It is dark and sucks you in from the beginning and doesn’t let up. I loved Andi’s character and debating her decisions with her. Excuse me while I scrape my jaw off the floor 🤯

What a read. Like seriously how does this author blow me away every time I read one of her stories.

Spencer and Andi are happily married and have everything they want.. or have they?? A secret in the basement changes everything.

This is a must read as it’s so good. In fact go read everything by this author as you won’t be disappointed.

So you come home one evening and your dusty ass husband has a random woman bound and gagged in your basement & you don’t gtfo and call the cops?
“But I love him” - no ma’am. He’s right over here, officer.
Also, I could see the ✨amazing plot twist✨ from a mile away.

I truly cannot understand the five star reviews. Has no one ever watched an episode of Forensic Files? Barney Fife would be the only cop of the planet who would believe Andi's explanation of what happened in the basement. Who is going to stand there and be repeatedly stabbed if you have a gun in your hand?? And who is going to lose their moral compass and go along with murder and body disposal after you find out your seemingly perfect husband is an adulterer and has no qualms about killing someone in cold blood?? I'm glad the book was short so I only wasted 169 pages of my life reading this ridiculous book.

This will be even trickier than usual to review and I say that every single time I write a KMod review, but it’s true! The whole plot is based on what is in the basement and it’s obviously a must to keep that a secret. But it’s a really good secret and what is down there has the power to change Andi and Spencer’s lives forever. There were some really solid and surprising twists here, especially as things escalated and got closer to the end. I didn’t see them coming and that’s always so fun as an avid thriller reader. If you like juicy and fast paced domestic thrillers this was a good one!

Well, I have a new favorite Kiersten Modglin book. From the first chapter, she had me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn’t put the book down until I knew what happened. Modglin is the Queen of Suspense, and she definitely brought her A-game with this one!

I loved Andi’s character and found her thought process and decisions totally relatable. I thought I knew what was happening throughout the book, but boy was I wrong. There were some great twists thrown into this story, but that ending totally got me. I did not see that coming at all!

I don’t want to say much more because I think you’re best going in knowing as little as possible. Thank you to Kiersten Modglin for an advanced copy and including me on your review team. All opinions are my own.

Synopsis:
Andi comes home earlier than she expected to. But she is not alone in the house. Noises come from the basement. It’s her husband coming out in a hurry. What is he hiding down there?

My opinion:
This was a really short listen, so I don’t want to go into detail because I’d spoil everything.
The narration was pretty solid. I did enjoy the female narrator. The male counterpart was ok. I listened double speed and everything was still easy to understand.
The story starts out with a bang and progresses really fast.
It’s kind of far fetched and unrealistic, but it was entertaining. A light popcorn thriller. I could not concentrate on reading, so I this was the perfect option for the time being.

This is quick audio story with very good narration. It held my attention and surprised me on a few occasions.

Why is it that whenever I read KMod I’m always feeling like she should contract as a Lifetime movie script writer?! 🎥 The best way I can describe these type of popcorn thriller stories are really like a good LMN movie: guilty pleasure vibes, mindless escapism with a few eye roll situations but still oddly satisfying despite the superficial nature of the story.

Enjoy the binge!🍿

Andi sees on their location sharing app that her workaholic husband is home in the middle of the day. Worried that he may be sick, or misbehaving, she goes home to check up on him.

With the house completely quiet, her mind is doing jumping jacks thinking up scenarios but nothing could prepare her for what Spencer has in the basement. He says it's an accident. He says it was all one big mistake. Don't go down there!

We all like to think we'd do the right thing but what if doing so risked everything we held dear? Can anyone become a monster?

This got batty with the quickness and as usual, I love K.Mod for that! This is her most ruthless and deliciously devious marriage drama since The Arrangement series. More please!

I read it in one evening and feel like I highlighted half of the book. It has some thought-provoking underlying themes the further into it you get.

Spencer and Andi are married with kids. It's been a happy life up until now . . . Spencer has a woman tied up in their basement. He claims she came over threatening to tell Andi of their affair. He wanted to protect his wife, so in a panic, he tied her up. But what is really going on and what will Andi do?

This was a short read but packed with many punches. What is a woman's role in her marriage, as a woman, when her husband hurts another woman? Some shocking twists and a satisfying end.

“Can you just tell me this much… Will you ever forgive me?”

Because of how rapidly the pages turned and how suspenseful it was, I finished it in one sitting. I honestly did not anticipate that outcome at all. 😮 The plot was superbly written, and the characters had depth. You will love this book, which I highly suggest to all thriller enthusiasts.
