Perhaps it's a case of a book being over-hyped to the point where I experienced a sense of anticipation and expectation too great for realization but after reading "All the Light We Cannot See", I felt rather underwhelmed. It's a nice enough sorry, I suppose (although "nice" is probably the wrong choice of words for a sorry with Nazis) but certainly nothing particularly extraordinary. I found nothing about it interesting enough to make me care if I ever read anything else by the author. Not a ba ...more

A masterful work of art. Loved this book, did not want it to end. The language, the characters, the pace and plotting. This is the story of a blind French girl and orphan German boy during WWII. Their stories are interwoven in short chapters that propel the reader through the rise of Nazism to the fall of Paris and on a journey throughout Europe during the war. The story and characters immediately come to life, alternating between 1944 siege of St. Malo, France and the 10 years preceding it. A w ...more

A beautifully written and realized novel about a young blind French girl and a young German boy and their struggles to survive amidst the devastation of World War II. When Marie-Laure is 12, her and her father flee Paris and the Nazis to the Saint-Malo and the home of her reclusive uncle. Meanwhile, Werner, an orphan growing up in a poor mining town, gets noticed by the Nazis for his genius with radios. Their stories are linked in many ways and come together in a beautiful heart-rending story. H ...more

Parallel stories of two teenagers on opposite sides of the war. The story jumps forward and backward in time which made for a few moments of confusion. The writing was elegant. The ending not so much. It was as though the author couldn't figure out how and where to end the book so he added a few more scenes, and then a few more after that. At least one was disturbing and didn't really fit with the rest of the novel. ...more

I liked the descriptions of the war itself. Quite realistic. The story itself was okay. I thought it would be more about the diamond, but in the end that was only one part of many different stories. Would be interesting if this book turned into a movie. A good read nevertheless.
