I've had this on my To Read Pile for several years - it was one of The Hot Books in 2018. It sort of jumped off the library shelf into my hands this week. I think I'm in the mood for some good historical fiction and it's also a great example of "minor character elaboration" which is a genre I have come to appreciate over the years, with reimaginings of Macbeth and with books like The Red Tent.

Circe is a modernized retelling of the story of the sorceress from the Odyssey. Circe is a Titan, daughter of the sun god Helios. In the Odyssey, she was a minor character, here we hear her side of the story. And what a story it is. Madeline Miller is a brilliant author. Circe is a fully developed character who has done some pretty terrible things but underneath it all, she is an amazingly complex heroine with whom the reader can't fail to sympathize. Well this didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it might have. The best parts of the book are in the last 50 pages.

I would look at him and feel a love so sharp it seemed my flesh lay open.



Circe is the ugly duckling of her divine family; a union between the titan Helios and the nymph Perse that results in several children, 4 of them having pharmika, or magical powers. This book would fit comfortably on the same shelf as The Red Tent and Ahab’s Wife. Enjoyed it immensely and it whetted my thirst for knowledge of ancient times and places.
