After a near fatal accident, Edgar's therapist encourages him to do something he enjoys (which is painting). He goes to Duma Key FL and begins painting brilliant and disturbing work. Soon he finds there is much more going on along Duma Key.

A slow building, suspenseful story with a couple interesting core characters.

In his book "On Writing," Stephen King wrote that he doesn't plot out his stories. He "excavates" them like fossils. He writes out his stories and sees where they take him.

I might be being too critical, but it seems like he tied together a lot of plot points in a sort of ham-handed fashion just to resolve the book.

I enjoyed reading it. It was a definite page-turner. The first third of the book was character development. It took a little while for things to start boiling.

I'd recommend it for fans

A good return to the paranormal for Mr. King. Like a few of his books this one could be pared down a bit. But then the characters would not be as rich and true to life. He builds a world full of real people, then as he says, he lets the monsters out. A good read!

It's hard to categorize Stephen King these days. "Horror writer" just does not cover it, particularly with a novel like "Duma Key". The horror element is almost secondary in this surprising effort. Certainly, King's well-trained creep factor is evident of course, but it is the tale of a man rebuilding the remnants of a destroyed life which truly drives the story here. Things that go bump in the night may make for a fun read, but things that go bump in life make for a far more interesting one. ...more

I really like the characters in this book. They are what made the book great and memorable. Yes, there was too much talking and not enough creepiness at the end but the characters of Edgar, Jack, Miss Eastlake and Wireman, especially Wireman, are going to stick with me for a long time to come. The book also has one of my new favorite sayings "Do the day and let the day do you" Wireman circa 2006 or thereabouts. ...more

Well, I just finished this chunkster of a tale; this was a re-introduction to Mr. King's work, as I haven't read anything by him in a few years. His writing ability STILL enthralls me, and I was with him all the way up until the next-to-last page - no spoilers here, but suffice it to say, I was saddened by the (needless) ending.

It was good to get back to an 'ol favorite tho, and I plan to re-visit him again soon.
