In some ways, this was not an easy read. Achebe assumes that the reader has a certain amount of knowledge; for example, what raffia is. Though it did include a glossary in the back, it didn't include all the words I wondered about. Reading this book gave me an idea of what if must be like for people in countries very different from ours to try to read fiction written by American authors. Read it twice and talk about it with other people. After my first read I considered it benign and simplistic, but rereading it and reading some of Achebe's short storie has completely changed my opinion. Achebe is a writer of incredible humanity. He's an impassioned observer: he presents his stories in all of their nuanced and often contradictory reality. His work engages reality, urging understanding and compassion.

It is a story of a man from a Nigerian village at about the time of colonialization. A little slow starting, but well written and interesting story of their culture and challenges.
Actually I am going to re-read this. But since I last read it more than thirty years ago, I think I can count it as "to-read"
