I'm not convinced that we have much opportunity to figure out most of what's going, but it's delightful watching the complex mess unravel.

Like the previous Sharon McCone novel, this one stays close to home, but this time around it's a much more nuanced story about a very minor supporting character. The result is much better (and even shocking by the time we get to the end).

We also get a very good description of Kauai. It's obvious that Muller has been there more than once. Sometimes her descriptions of how the island is put together are a bit awkward, and she overuses Hawaiian terms, but overall, this novel gives a strong impressions of (Kauaian) place. ...more

Quite simply: a brilliant book.

Michener's ability to tell a massive, generational story spanning a thousand years is awe-inspiring. I missed not heari Quite simply: a brilliant book.

Michener's ability to tell a massive, generational story spanning a thousand years is awe-inspiring. I missed not hearing about the years between the landing of the Polynesians and the missionaries, but this was otherwise an amazing look at the panoply of Hawaiian history. (My other niggle: I wish that Michener had used real names rather than turning everyone into fictional characters.) And it's also an amazing look at the falseness and trueness of history as time goes by.

However, what's amazing is that he simultaneously gives us the vivid and evocative stories of dozens of well-drawn characters, all of whom we come to care about. And he also manages to give us a variety of points of view, not just the "American" one.

And beyond that all, Michener's writing is just amazing. So carefully crafted, so wonderfully polished, with such precisely selected words. It's a joy to read, even before you get to its content.

I will definitely be reading more of Michener's work, and especially his epics of this scale. ...more
