Nathan White is a fictional man I wouldn't call my book boyfriend, wouldn't simp over him and call him the "standard" because this man isn't a standard. He isn't. Truly. He is a lawless psychopathic megalomaniac and it's just so fascinating reading about him like he is a subject of a case study.
This fascination with a dark romance hero is what I find exhilarating. And it's been so long since I felt this way. The need to own this book is something I've not felt in a long time. I know I keep repeating this but fuck, I'm speechless.
Lawless God by Lola King is Haunting Adeline if it was better and had a plot. A heroine who isn't just "strong and fierce" who keeps fighting back. But a motherfucking queen who is known for her ruthlessness and someone who everyone is scared of.
Jesus christ. Nathan, this man. I have no words for his depravity. Rest assured every sexual activity between them was dub-con. But other things? Oh fuck me, there's unhinged and then there's Nathan who manipulates you but never hides the fact that he does. He will never lie. Everything he plans on doing, including the fact that Stockholm syndrome is his end goal, he'll put it all upfront.
All I can say is if you try to get mad at the heroine for giving in to him, she is already well aware of her masochist tendencies, yet at the same time you can't stay angry for long because that'd underestimating her. And underestimating Kayla King is something even Nathan White learns to never do.
Cue the laughter. Because that's something I never expected yet when I laughed out loud so many times whenever Kayla does something to Nathan it was beyond hilarious seeing it from Nathan's pov. Every time Nathan commands her to do something by saying "...like a good little wife" she manages to turn that task into a physical fight and it's so fun. Also every interaction of Nathan and Sam too!!! Not to mention the people she kills and threaten when she is possesive of Nate.
His antisocial behaviour disorder and his inability to understand people's emotions makes him study reading emotions like it's an academic course. And my god, everytime I try to hate him, he does something so unexpected WHILE remaining non-chalant about it, I just can't control my fascination.
All I know is when I get this urge to own a book, it's serious commitment. That means I want the characters to be with me and claim ownership of them and it's that feeling of strong desire and impulse that makes me put this book in my 'all-time-fav' shelf.
I fear I won't ever be able to do this book justice by putting it all in correct words. For now, I'll show you some scenes and quotes below which frankly? won't ever be enough.

I’ll recognize her tone of voice and the features on her face. It’ll make it simple to read her. She names it, and I can study it. She names it, and I can remember what it looks like on her. I can’t emphasize and feel bad or ever share her joy. I can only attempt to learn. Sometimes, I can link it to something I’ve been through, but that is a lot of work because I hardly ever feel much. But if I learn what everything looks like on her face, in her body, in her breathing. If I learn all her emotions by heart, there will be nothing she can hide from me. Utter control. What a fun game to play.

Just want to quantify it, 50% - half the book was full of Ruslan hurting Emma and till literally 51% he didn't get to know the truth. It took about 10% of groveling with little to no resistance from the heroine about forgiving him.
All that aside, the kidnapping was at such a convenient time, I was like "dramatic much?".

Okay if this was a story of unrequited love where only one person makes extreme efforts, trusts and builds a relationship while the one doesn't even trust him till the actual very end, this book did a phenomenal job writing the heroine to play part.
Because respect, trust, understanding and acceptance which should be the key parts of love, were only seen in the heroine when she was abusing it. But ofc she "loves" him or so she claims when she is about to kill him (a-gain).
Not to mention that last scene where he "has" to kill her was so cringe instead of it being impactful. Because it was the fakest interaction they've ever had. Throughout the whole book, they didn't talk to each other like this and suddenly they are? What's this Wattpad behaviour?
This was an extremely bad story where I didn't believe in their relationship, didn't see their love, only insta-unrequited- throughout-the-book-love from the hero and heavy dose of insta lust. Take out the romance and you got yourself a book to keep in your spank bank....more

Makes me wonder is there a book in existence by Rina Kent which is not connected to another one of her series?

I've read a lot of sex-to-love, fuck-buddies-to-lovers stories, and it's hardly ever that I see a well-constructed plot with proper character as well as story development for a romance. This was an extremely long book, sure. I even dropped it before 40%, but then picked it up again hours later, and this time I realized I was just lacking patience because to go from just being in a sexual, no-strings-attached contract to an actual, meaningful start of a relationship, you need hell of a substance. It doesn't happen magically overnight.
And there were lots of uniquely embedded ways that this buildup occurred. One such way was what I loved the most. It's the fact that Ruslan's (H) personality didn't do a complete 180 when he found the sex is amazing with the secretary. The changes in him, the emotional sparks inside him began igniting from the first time he saw her in her home, with the kids, something related to her personal life and from there on, more stuff began to happen which made him act in such unusual ways where he found himself not only getting deeply invested and involved into her life but actually being interested in something other than her, which was the kids, an extension of her.
I picked this book up from seeing a reel about the 2nd book of this duet and from that blurb, I was expecting a surprise pregnancy ending where she leaves after finding out he is the Bratva Pakhan so I was expecting to be disappointed in that regard, but actually, that didn't happen at all, the overall plot was just so meticulously woven that nothing went ridiculous or unnecessary....more

➺ Married heroine cheats on her husband. While that's not my cup of tea, I did anticipate something like this after reading the blurb. I've enjoyed novels where an amnesiac hero works to mend past marital infidelity, so the reversed role doesn't bother me. What did bother me, though, was the fact that she cheats on him again after the amnesia.
➺ Even if we let it all go. What I absolutely loathed here was the justifications of cheating. Oh it was subtle. Never explicitly stating that her involvement with Nathan (om) was due to her issues with Damien (H-the husband) during those moments. However, the extensive justifications characters employed to rationalize their cheating, coupled with the artful writing style that manipulated readers into siding with the heroine, were truly impressive. Trust me, had I approached this book thinking it was a typical contemporary romance, rather than picking it up as a romantic thriller/suspense, I might have fallen for the manipulation and maybe even loved it. But I wasn't in the mood to be swayed; I was fully immersed in thriller mode and left my empathy behind.
➺ The result of this was that the plot twist (especially the final one) didn't strike me as a mind-blowing twist of the century; it came across as a contrived plot device deliberately used to rationalize her cheating. And in the end, if you don't find the heroine likable, disapprove of her actions and character, there's the last chapter to level the playing field between her and her husband. This gives you the impression that her actions don't matter as much because her husband isn't squeaky clean either.
Someone needs to understand that two wrongs don't make a right. Just because both characters are flawed doesn't make the initial wrong acceptable. This is where I take issue with books centered around cheating. For example : revenge cheating is one thing, But if you cheat on your partner and then find out they cheated too (not the case here; Damien remained faithful throughout), it doesn't justify your cheating. Because you did it believing your partner was faithful. Another common theme I've noticed in these cheating heroine books is that they often stray due to feeling neglected. Here it's even more perplexing, considering it hasn't been long since the loss of their child – just five days ago. She can't remember her pregnancy or the accident that led to the loss, yet she's upset that her husband isn't openly grieving with her. I'm not one to pass judgment on the struggles of a fictional married couple, but what got to me was her contrasting understanding of Nathan's grief (who also lost his son -9yo maybe- a year ago) and her lack of understanding towards Damien's grief, which is fresh – it happened just 5 DAYS AGO!
➺I did not like the subtle way it was implied by sentences like these, that whatever led to her cheating with Nathan was due to the strain in her marriage and the challenges they were facing, which says a lot about your marriage, and don't get me started on how she blamed Damien for her about-to-happen cheating, Damien apologising for HER cheating:
"disappointed her husband wouldn’t share his grief with her the way Nathan has been."
"Inappropriate thoughts of Nathan fill her mind. She blocks them, forces her thoughts to her husband. She glances at her phone with disappointment. Damien never called. She rises from the bed."
and when she says stuff like this :
“I blame you, Damien. Whatever happens with Nathan, I blame you. You got us into this mess.” Had she known she had an affair with Nathan before Rebecca called about the assignment, she would have declined it on the spot. Fuck her job. Not when it interferes with her marriage.
then proceed to force her way to go with Nathan on his Alaska trip AFTER knowing she had a fling-affair with him before the accident. Her "reasons" seemed quite feeble to me, honestly...more

I absolutely hate single parent if the ex is still in the picture. I love single dad/mom and this was so good because Rosie is a mom of a cute little toddler I adore. But this pet peve of mine makes me skeptical and anxious about reading it further. I don't enjoy the constant comparison to the ex, knowing that he will eventually become a source of conflict and likely be portrayed as the bad guy. It's also predictable that the main character will be shown as a better parent compared to the actual parent, with the child obviously favoring the main character.
While these elements don't completely ruin the story, they make it lack uniqueness and become boring. It's clear that the father of the child is a terrible person, and the way things are going, he seems even worse. He shouldn't be allowed to have the child, not even for a few hours. However, it bothers me that the heroine, as much as I love her, simply accepts his cruel words and doesn't stand up for herself or consider keeping him away from her child. I can't bear to witness that fictional toddler being hurt and let down by his father's actions.
The problem I have with this is that in the single parent trope, these situations don't feel genuine like a typical drama involving OM/OW would. They come across as nothing more than a plot device to establish the main character's superiority by demeaning the secondary character. As a reader, I didn't feel like the ex was written with the intention of creating a genuine third-party conflict (although I'm not a big fan of those either), but rather to show how good of a dad, boyfriend, lover the main character is and how much better he is than the actual father.
I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if it focused solely on Adam and Rosie without any other secondary characters with evil intentions. I absolutely love Adam's friends and the hockey players, they are hilarious and my favorite part of the story.
The hidden identity trope is one of my favorites, and I was really excited to read this book. However, I should have known that in a 450+ page contemporary romance, there would be more than just one unnecessary conflict. After reading a few reviews that confirmed my doubts about the ex/father creating more problems, and the heroine even considering breaking up with Adam over it, I've decided not to continue reading this book.

This statement by the FMC made this story sound promising for me and made me excited to read this:
“The man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with won’t need a break from me. He’ll know from the moment I enter his life that I’m worth keeping. That’s the type of man I deserve to be with and I’m not going to settle for anything less.”
Now, let's examine what went wrong:
(1) A decade ago, when H was 18, he broke up with her and shattered her heart under the pressure of football and college, not of his own accord, but due to his father's influence. Initially, this reason seemed believable, and I refrained from blaming H excessively or thinking he deserved to grovel. However, as the story progressed, I became infuriated that he hadn't bothered to contact, check in, or even mention her throughout the past ten years.
(2) Ten years later, she has become the CEO of a cosmetic company and has not remained celibate, although she hasn't been seriously committed to anyone. We get one chapter about him before the accident, and the h is never mentioned. Moreover, it's explicitly stated that his greatest love is football, and he wouldn't give it up for anything.
(3) Then comes the accident, head injury, and now he remembers everything, including the h as his "wife". His mother calls the h, who hasn't been in contact with him for a decade, but she drops everything and rushes to the hospital because he woke up asking for his "wife".
(4) Lasey, the h's best friend, stands out as my favorite character in the story. She is so furious at the h for leaving NYC and going all the way to Arizona for the guy who broke her heart. Lasey goes on a rampage about this, and I love her for it. I wish she were the FMC. However, the brain-dead h dismisses Lasey's valid anger, thinking she needs anger management due to her temper, unable to see that Lasey is right.
(5) At 31%, she is already contemplating being involved with him and playing along with the charade of being his wife to help him. By 35%, love confessions are already being exchanged. I wasn't surprised to see yet another heroine succumb to the man who broke her heart after just a few intimate moments. The oxytocin was so high, she said "I love you" and is ready for forever when a chapter ago, she was ready to help him but keep her walls up to shield her heart.
"He has no idea how easily my body could betray me if I was alone with him again."
(6) At 38%, she already trusts him completely. This trust was shattered ten years ago when he left her for football. Apparently, all it takes is a couple of orgasms and a head injury-induced amnesia for her to forgive him, forget everything he did, and trust him again.
(7) Why is Ms. CEO of a company without any notice has gone for a week long vacation and is so okay with not using her phones because the H said so? Doesn't she have work to do or was that all for one chapter to show "how much she has accomplished"...more

Usually, I'm not a fan of the fake marriage/relationship trope because it often involves MCs being oblivious to their feelings and refusing to acknowledge them, which drags the story unnecessarily. (you can see why i haven't read TLH & TSLD )
Fortunately, this one wasn't anything like that and once they admit their unabashed lust for each other, the build-up for hot spicy scenes incessantly occurred. Enough to get both the MCs and the reader all hot and bothered.
I even loved that there was never a question for the hero to even think of being unfaithful to the heroine even when it was just a fake marriage as though it was an unspoken fact. They were both on the same page throughout the book individually, I never once questioned their growing love. Additionally, I have a soft spot for the boss-employee enemies-to-lovers trope, so I was naturally inclined to pick up this book.
The reason I'm deducting one star is because the book promised a lot of spice with incredible dirty talk between the main characters. I expected a higher level of explicit content, but unfortunately, it fell short in that aspect. Apart from one sex scene and an oral encounter, there wasn't as much explicit content as I had hoped for and it was all FTB right at the promising moment.
If it weren't for the fact that I still enjoyed the journey and found this to be an entertaining story within a trope I don't typically enjoy, I would have given it 3 stars. Moreover, it managed to pull me out of my reading slump, so it definitely deserves a solid 4-star rating....more

With a Vi Keeland book in hand, I don't feel the need to dive into the blurb or sift through reviews beforehand. Regardless of the plot, I can always count on her work to be light-hearted, fast-paced, and devoid of unnecessary delays when it comes to the main characters' initial encounter. Her stories never fail to make me burst into laughter and provide the perfect escape when I'm in the mood for something entertaining yet not overly heavy or cringe-inducing. True to form, this story wasted no time in introducing us to Beck Cross and Nora right from the very first page.
Their first and many conversations (banter and bickering more like it) never ceased to make me laugh. Their arguments were foreplay for both of them. The fact that they never hid their lust from each other while also maintaining the no-acting-on-it policy was delightful to witness. When they did get together for their casual no-strings-attached relationship, it was unexpectedly delicious because i was not expecting this level of dirty-talk as well as kinkiness from Vi Keeland.
From the start, Beck wasn't entirely enthusiastic about their relationship being solely based on sex. If Nora had been looking for something serious and wasn't hell bent on it being casual, he would've no issues being serious with her. This aspect of their dynamic, seen through Beck's perspective, remained consistent throughout the story, which I found refreshing. It wasn't a typical casual-turned-forever story where its sex till 90% then out of the blue with minimal character development and relationship growth, they fall in love and head to the hea. No, this story was all about showing, not just telling.

Yet, throughout their journey, Beck's personality surprised me. Despite his initial portrayal as a rich, handsome, and delightfully crude billionaire "alpha" male, he exhibited undeniable sweetness, care, and love like a cinnamon roll with a pleasant twist.

OMG I cannot believe there's a series equally as fun and dark as the Queens & Monsters series by J.T. Geissinger which is my fav dark/sweet romance ever. And I'm constantly looking for books to give me the same exact vibes as that one.
From the heroines to the heroes, from the plot to the character development, everything is perfection and therefore the best.
