Plot-wise, from the first chapter to the last - from the first character introduced to the last - Mr. Mercedes is choke-full of outdated tropes. In fact, at a more meta-level, Stephen King writing a book full of outdated tropes is in itself a trope (I am intentionally avoiding saying cliched).
The writing, in parts, is worse than anything Dan Brown has ever written.
Did I still finish the book, and will I still try to read the other two books of the trilogy? Probably. It's Stephen King after all.
