The story moves through London, Berlin, France and the US. Stead does such a great job of describing these places you can almost imagine yourself there with Sam. What struck me most was the humor in the novel there were a few times I laughed out loud.

It is easy to see why this book won the 2010 T.A.G. Hungerford Award. This is a mystery novel first and foremost with a touch of romance thrown in. You cannot help believe that the characters that are written on the page are real and their stories cannot help but touch you at times. This book is both funny and insightful and never losses track of what it is trying to achieve creating believable characters for us to enjoy. The story revolves around Annie a student of anthropology from the city. As we and Annie get to know the towns folk Annie becomes a little obsessed with trying to uncover the mystery of the child’s disappearance and to decipher the towns wild ideas about what actually happened. All the while finding herself drawn to Mick Hooper. You find yourself delighting in the charters in this story and waiting to her the story being told through their eyes. This book is a little hard to put down once you start reading the characters have such pull that you cannot help but want to read on and find out how the story unfolds.
