i love this book so much, i could probably recite it to you with my eyes closed. this book, while not as complex compared to the later books on the series, is what started this whole thing off. the nostalgia feel mixed with world-building is what makes this book great for me.
violet, klaus, and yes, even sunny are great protagonists in terms of resourcefulness. i adored the simplicity in this book compared to the complexities to come. while i didn’t love justice strauss, i did love lemony snicket’s narrating style, which is ingenious and very insightful.
i enjoy the setting of olaf’s house, even though the baudelaire’s sure don’t, and everything is so well crafted. although this book is unfortunate, hence the name, it still charms with its characters, absurdity, and mystery.
once you start this series, you’ll get sucked into this mysterious world and read until the end ...more

starting of, i liked this book. i read it many, many years after everyone else was reading it (i didn’t read until 2021) but i had heard good things about it so i picked it up.
this was one of the books that, as everyone says, is total fluff but entertaining all the same. i read it during the summer and i didn’t mind the lack of educational value at all. it was entertaining and served its purpose. i have my problems with it, but we’ll get to that in a moment.
this book started off very slow for me. even after we meet edward, the pace was still very slow. not until 3/4 into the book was i really into it. vampire baseball was where it started to pick up. i am hoping this was a world-building book and there is more action in the next one.
i can’t lie though, i enjoyed that this book was more romance-focused! i enjoyed bella and edward’s conversations and i was thoroughly invested in this book. also, can i just take a minute to say, i am so pleasantly surprised that, while there was a heavy romance focus, it was entirely clean! kissing is as far as it goes in this book and i cannot tell you how appreciative of that i am in YA these days.
i did overall like twilight, even though it dragged out. i enjoyed Bella’s relationship with her dad and i liked edward as a character. i did feel bad for jacob at the end, though!
now, let’s talk about what I didn’t like: bella. bella as a main character, was not my favorite. she was annoying at times and i feel she wasn’t a strong female character. i have no problem with her being dull or average as that was, i think, a literary technique done most intentionally. i do, however, have a problem with her being pouty and whiny and falling for edward so. darn. fast.
seriously, it wasn’t insta-love, but when you’ve only known/liked a guy for a few weeks and you are already saying you’ll die if you’re apart and you’d sacrifice everything to be with him ...more

more like 4.5 stars. i really enjoyed the humor of this and i actually understood most of it but the whole “we, two young teenagers, just met and are in love so let’s kill ourselves” was a little much for me and just made me laugh.
ngl this was more of a comedy than a tragedy to me because of it but i really enjoyed the writing and the nurse gives me life ✨

this book is a staple for children’s classics. i haven’t met many people who haven’t read this book. i’m not big in animal novels, so this wasn’t my favorite of all time, but i did enjoy it for what it was and i’m glad i picked it up.
this book is a very fast, easy read and i recommend giving it a try if you haven’t already read it. even if you don’t like animal books, like me, i still say this book is worth a read.
