This book adamantly argues the gross and damning narrative of sensationalizing a serial killer. The cruelty of assigning immediate blame and burden to victims. The lack of expediency in prioritizing the safety of women. The lack of deference in a woman’s truth. The harshness of greed. The backstabbing for fame. But also … The unity in community. The power in being honest. The freedom in paving your own path outside of the delegation of family or fiancé. The purity of the memory of those you loved. And the peace in honoring them through justice, truth, perseverance, and brilliance. ...more

This had the right amount of action, sentimentality, introspection, backstory, and character-building!
The "crime" plot was a little meh/cliche/called-it... but overall, super into it and am going straight into book 2!
Here's the thing, if you love an atmospheric book with a lot of character introspection - then this is it. But if you wereMerpppp. This was tiresome.
Here's the thing, if you love an atmospheric book with a lot of character introspection - then this is it. But if you were looking for suspense and mystery, then girl, it's not here.
The repetitive narration of both Elvis and Maitte was a lot for me. Like, I amped this up to 2.5 speed for the majority of the listen. (And I'm notoriously a 1.25-1.5 speed listener.) With Maitte, it was a lot of owe is me, and with Elvis, it was a lot of "boost him up to see him not do much"... ...more

This was recommended by my dear friend Laura (laurasloaninglibrary on IG) and it did not disappoint! It’s a very fun and clever take on the Anna Delvey story, with subtle twists that made me wanna forego all adult responsibilities in order to finish.
I docked one star off because sometimes the parallels between this story and the Anna Delvey case were too on the nose; but overall, TERRIFIC ...more

Maybe it's because it was too fantastical... like if this were coined a "mafia romance" - fine, I'd be more willing to believe the plot. But it was just one Lifetime movie trope after another.

You have 8 primary characters. And each of them has their own backstories and motives. But there wasn't enough time or pull for me to get emotionally invested with any of them. And I think that was what was lacking - emotive characters.
Because here's the thing - this is a murder mystery. And I wanted to root for someone. And I had NO clue (pun intended) who to root for because I didn't get enough "time" with any given character to care about them. So then, when the end came about, I was like "Oh cool, okay, kinda called that."
I guess this would be better as a tv mini-series (which is ironic because it's about a tv series). But truly, because then I could at least interact with the body language of each character too. ...more
