I got this book for the jokes. It wasn’t the wisest choice, but there is not much to choose from. Political jokes need, most of the time, context, otherwise they are not funny. I know enough about Communism, but local details may not be familiar to me.
At a concentration camp in Siberia, several inmates are talking with each other about why they are in the camp. One says, ‘I am here for saying that Karl Radek was a counter-revolutionary.’ The second says, ‘Isn’t that interesting? I am here for saying that he was not a counter-revolutionary.’ They turned to the third man and asked, ‘What are you here for?’ He answered: ‘I am Karl Radek.’

Ben Lewis researches Communist political jokes across the Soviet bloc. He seems serious about it. He mentions that there are different lines of thought. First comes the minimalist position that considers political jokes an expression of public opinion, nothing more, and that they had no effect on the system. The maximalists argue that the jokes brought down Communism, because ‘every joke is a tiny revolution’ (George Orwell). And then there are the denials that say joke-telling actually helped prolong Communism, because it was a way to blow off steam, and so it was advantageous to the system.
After the October Revolution, God sends three observers to Russia: St Luke, St George and St Peter. They send him three telegrams. ‘I’ve fallen into the hands of the Cheka – St Luke.’ ‘I’ve fallen into the hands of the Cheka – St George.’ ‘All’s well. Doing fine. Cheka Superintendent Petrov.’

Lewis is a maximalist. From the beginning he wants to prove that jokes were the reason Communism failed. As his research advances, he can’t prove that.
A dissident arrives at a remote village, to which he has been exiled. Everywhere seems deserted, but as he gets towards the centre of town he notices an overpowering horrible smell. In the main square he comes across a big crowd of people standing quietly in a lake of sewage coming up to their chins. Suddenly he falls in. He starts flailing his arms and shouting in disgust, ‘Yuk! I cannot stand this! How can you people just stand here not doing anything?’ They reply, ‘Shut up and keep still, you are making waves.’
He writes a history of Communism through jokes. He uses underground humour and official satire. He discovers, to his disappointment, that only 200,000 people were sent to the Gulag by Stalin for anti-Soviet propaganda (jokers), and even more disappointment that in other countries it was a few thousand or a few hundred. How can he prove this theory if ‘only’ 200,000 people were sent to the Gulag for jokes?
A clerk hears laughing behind the door of a courtroom. He opens the door. At the other end of the room, the judge is sitting on the podium convulsed in laughter. ‘What’s so funny?’ asks the clerk. ‘I just heard the funniest joke of my life,’ says the judge. ‘Tell it to me.’ ‘I can’t.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘I just sentenced someone to five years’ hard labour for doing that.’

Another one of his disappointments is when he is told that most jokes are recycled throughout history. He was aware that Communist jokes were re-adapted and re-used in different times with only minor alterations, some of them even coming from Nazi Germany or the 19th century, but somehow he didn’t consider the fact that they can date back to much earlier times, in many cases even impossible to date exactly.
A man was reported to have said: ‘That Nicholas is a moron!’ He was arrested by the policeman for insulting Tsar Nicolas II. ‘No, sir,’ said the man, ‘I did not mean our respected Emperor, but another Nicholas!’ ‘Don’t try to trick me,’ replied the policeman. ‘If you say “moron”, you obviously refer to our Tsar.’
Goebbels was touring German schools. At one, he asked the students to call out patriotic slogans. ‘Heil Hitler,’ shouted one child. ‘Very good,’ said Goebbels. ‘Deutschland über alles,’ another called out. ‘Excellent. How about a stronger slogan?’ A hand shot up, and Goebbels nodded. ‘Our people shall live for ever,’ the little boy said. ‘Wonderful,’ exclaimed Goebbels. ‘What is your name, young man?’ ‘Israel Goldberg.’
In the end he does not prove anything, and he reaches no conclusion. He has no method. He goes from place to place and talks to a few people and that’s it. As his quest progresses, he discovers that joke-telling become a part of daily life. People were not sentenced and deported for it anymore. The subjects changed and after the fall of Communism they disappeared completely.
He goes to a few former Communist countries, but not too many. The biggest contribution to his research comes from a Romanian statistician, who catalogued the jokes in the '80s and attempted a scientific statistical analysis.

Most of the time, Lewis collects jokes and re-tells them. The jokes are used to support the points and claims he is making. I was hoping for more jokes or, if not, a more serious/scientific research. I got neither. The entire corpus of Radio Yerevan corpus of Communist jokes is only briefly mentioned. He travelled to different countries, but he missed or ignored the jokes with local popular characters.

Stalin asks again: ‘Who coughed?’ One man raises his hand. ‘That’s a terrible cold you’ve got,’ says Stalin. ‘Take my car and go to hospital.’
Stalin is in his limo, alone with his driver. ‘Let me ask you a question,’ he says to the chauffeur. ‘Tell me honestly, have you become more or less happy since the Revolution?’ ‘In truth, less happy,’ says the driver. ‘Why is that?’ asks Stalin, his hackles raised. ‘Well, before the Revolution I had two suits. Now I only have one.’ ‘You should be pleased,’ says Stalin. ‘Don’t you know that in Africa they run around completely naked?’ ‘Really?’ the chauffeur replies. ‘So how long ago did they have their revolution?’
One day Stalin is in his office in the Kremlin and notices that there are mice in his study. He complains to President Kalinin about this. The President thinks for a moment and then suggests: ‘Why don’t you put up a sign reading “Collective Farm”? Half the mice will die of hunger and the other half will run away.’
This felt more like a book about another (academic) book. Like the adventures and musing of a social scientist in his research. Like a behind-the-scenes of a real book. Otherwise, what purpose do his long pages about his relationship serve?

I was disappointed. But at least I got to save some funny jokes.

Abia după ce am mers la cinema, m-am întrebat oare cum o fi cartea? Pentru că eram sigur că am văzut doar o posibilă viziune a felului în care arată povestea. Era prea suprarealistă și extravagantă, cu prea mult efort de imaginație personală a regizorului (Yorgos Lanthimos) ca să reprezinte singura interpretare/viziune posibilă.
De asemenea, filmul naște mai multe întrebări lăsate fără răspuns. Mesajul lui este foarte ambiguu. Și nu e genul de film ambiguu în sensul că te lasă liber să-ți alegi finalul, de exemplu, dar în sensul că mesajul lui este ascuns prea adânc și lasă (exagerat de) mult pe umerii spectatorului. Este un film feminist? Sau poate sexist? Dacă este feminist, de ce? Dacă nu este feminist, de ce unii spun că e? Și apoi mai apar și alte întrebări, care te fac să te simți inconfortabil la vizionare: de ce sexualizează un personaj care se presupune că are creierul unui copil de doi-trei ani? Cum ar trebui să te simți știind asta?
La ieșirea din sală eram confuz. Parcă fusese un film despre grooming și emancipare, despre eliberare și autoregăsire, despre spargerea unor norme sociale și clădirea lor pe alte baze. În același timp, parcă nu fusese despre niciunul din aceste lucruri cu adevărat, ci despre o perspectivă masculină – male gaze – asupra unor lucruri pe care bărbații le înțeleg mai greu (sau deloc).
Romanul este diferit. Nu e nici pe departe la fel de „ciudat”, de extravagant, de colorat, amuzant sau deplasat. Este o poveste destul de cuminte (cu mult sex sau „însoțire”, dar nu chiar ca motor principal al întregii povești), scrisă folosind diverse artificii narative pentru a-i da o notă de autenticitate documentară, chiar dacă e ficțiune pură. În film, al treilea act este modificat aproape total, iar celelalte păstrează doar niște repere generale, regizorul stabilind o cronologie diferită și o acțiune mult mai alertă. Deci lecturarea cărții nu a fost chiar o pierdere de timp.
Alasdair Gray, autorul, sau McCandless, naratorul, spune povestea Bellei Baxter, salvată de God(win) Baxter, care, datorită vârstei sale mintale fragede, nu știe de frică și inhibiții. Urmărim drumul ei de învățare – nu doar a propriului corp și a dorințelor sale sexuale – ci a lumii în toată complexitatea ei. Dacă la începutul drumului, lumea era un loc idilic, cu oameni, lucruri și intenții bune, la sfârșit lumea ajunge să fie una a nedreptăților, mizeriei, sărăciei. În călătoria inițiatică a Bellei, diferite tipuri de bărbați îi arată fațete diferite ale lumii în care trăiește. Nu am văzut prea mult feminism în roman. Sau cel puțin nu scrierea unui roman feminist a fost intenția principală. Normele sociale demodate, lipsa drepturilor pentru femei, nevoia de emancipare sunt teme recurente, dar parcă apar ca efecte ale personajelor inadaptate social și sărite de pe fix. (Poate subtilitatea a fost intențională). Totuși, autorul cărții este mult mai atent și empatic cu personajele sale decât autorul filmului, explicând și lucruri care în film par băgate sub preș, din cauza că sunt (probabil) prea delicate pentru nota în care e făcut filmul.
A fost o lectură ușoară, dar după care nu am rămas cu multe. Pe alocuri devine plictisitoare, chiar dacă autorul schimbă de multe ori registrul și tehnicile ca să te țină conectat și interesat.

Or if you, like me, have read some books on Russian interference from others (Belton, Pomeranstev, Aro, Higgins etc.) this will provide few additional insights.
Harding focuses on a few case studies (Skripal poisoning, Trump-Russia collusion, Brexit, hacking sports organisations, hacking of the DNC etc.) and the main actors behind them. His primary concerns are how Russia influenced the election of Trump, how it was involved in swaying the British public in favour of Brexit, and how it will not stop. By reading, it becomes clear (and depressing) that the Western public is not prepared to face Russian interference, because it uses democracy and the liberties we enjoy against us, and how ill-equipped are governments to limit/stop this interference.
The most worrying fact is that even though what Russia is doing is visible, documented and clear, politicians are still actively seeking it and benefiting from it. If you set Trump aside, who is clearly unfit to hold public office, especially the highest public office in the most powerful country in the world, motivated by greed, business interests, and vanity, and from whom you do not expect any kind of moral and ethical considerations, another worrying example from the book is Boris Johnson. Even if he personally came across as flamboyant and eccentric; nevertheless, you were holding the British government as a whole to a higher standard. It was not the case. A day after his election, Johnson was celebrating with two Russians: Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev, father and son, owners of the Evening Standard, which played a part in his and his party's success. Johnson also withheld reports on Russian interference from the public. We all knew that Brexit was a dirty affair (since we learned about Cambridge Analytica), but somehow we hoped that it was a one-off, and in its aftermath leaders will behave rationally, not that they will be so brazen as to taunt us with their Russian connections and disregard to public opinion and public interest.

Acum câteva zile mi-a venit notificarea de la un anticariat și am decis să-l citesc imediat pentru că subiectul este incitant și ofertant: Procesele de la Moscova (acele show trials) din perioada 1936-1938, când au avut loc epurările din rândurile partidului.
Așadar, Rubașov este un revoluționar care și-a dedicat viața cauzei comuniste și partidului. A participat la Revoluție. A condus oști. A fost agent sub acoperire în diverse țări europene, unde ba a organizat, ba a dezbinat cauza muncitorilor locali, în funcție de nevoile partidului. A fost prins în străinătate, închis, torturat. La întoarcerea acasă, în loc să stea să se recupereze, el pleacă din nou, într-o nouă misiune. Mai târziu, acasă, devine responsabil pentru o importantă industrie. Încă de la început a făcut parte din cercul intim al Numărului 1 (Stalin). Este o persoană cunoscută în țara lui. Este respectat. Apare în fotografii care decorează birourile nomenclaturii.
Rubașov este un personaj fictiv, un personaj compozit menit să ilustreze tipologia celor judecați și condamnați în Procesele de la Moscova.
După ce este arestat și închis într-o aripă destinată „politicilor”, este supus unor interogatorii. Mai întâi de un fost camarad, care încearcă să-l ia cu binișorul, cunoscându-i caracterul, apoi de un ofițer din garda tânără, născut după Revoluție, care e adeptul unor metode de tortură fizică, considerând că „totul este o chestiune de constituție”, adică de toleranță la durere și suferință.
Aceste interogatorii duc la discuții ample despre politică, filosofie, moralitate, tiranie, vinovăție, moarte etc. Toate aceste teme se întrepătrund, fiecare parte folosindu-le pentru a-și argumenta poziția sau.
Transformarea lui Rubașov este interesantă și este ceea ce trebuie urmărit și ceea ce vrea autorul să urmărim.

Mă așteptam la un studiu istoric, care să întoarcă pe toate fețele campania Aliaților de bombardamente strategice, cu accent pe Dresda, ca fiind cel mai vizibil capitol, despre care s-a vorbit cel mai mult. Nu a fost așa. Am citit o poveste, ca un roman construit atent prin tehnici literare. Are multe personaje, multe fire narative, multiple perspective. Nu ar fi neapărat un lucru rău – faptul că bombardarea Dresdei este adusă publicului într-un mod mai ușor de digerat –, dar ceea ce-și propune (sau nu-și propune autorul), precum și felul în care o face sunt problematice.
Sunt aproape 500 de pagini prin care autorul rescrie mărturii. Identifică oameni care au scris despre zilele de 13-15 februarie 1945 (dar și cele ulterioare) în jurnale, memorii, interviuri mai târzii și le fură poveștile. Citează extrem de rar (unele citări sunt foarte penibile, două-trei cuvinte care nu aduc nimic în plus, parcă doar de dragul de a pune și niște ghilimele pe undeva). O istorie bazată pe memorii și surse orale ar trebui să se axeze mai mult pe ceea ce spun oamenii, pentru autenticitate, în schimb autorul rescrie tot ce i se pare relevant, împletind lucrurile știute cu speculații și propria imaginație. Ne bazăm pe imaginația lui pentru a ne spune ce (probabil) simțeau unii sau alții în diferite momente și la ce (probabil) se gândeau în anumite momente, când vedeam anumite lucruri.
Personajele sunt diverse. Avem oameni din Dresda, de diferite vârste, din diferite pături sociale, atât nemți, cât și evrei. Avem piloți britanici și americani. Avem chiar și prizonieri de război în Dresda. Autorul se oprește câte un pic peste fiecare, schimbând după câteva paragrafe sau pagini perspectiva, sărind în altă parte.
În primele 200 de pagini, McKay ne desenează o imagine idilică și idealizată a Dresdei dinainte de bombardamente. Ne povestește cum a înflorit aici arta plastică și muzică. Cum oamenii colecționau porțelanuri. Cum își petreceau timpul liber și ce credeau străinii despre Dresda, care era, după spusele lui, un fel de leagăn al culturii europene. Nu neg că așa stăteau lucrurile, chiar sunt sigur că așa arăta Dresda în deceniile premergătoare războiului, dar faptul că autorul se axează atât de mult pe acest aspect mi se pare exagerat și, deși el nu o spune explicit, devine clar în care tabără se află (a fost bombardamentul asupra Dresdei crimă de război sau o acțiune necesară). Chiar începe să fie plictisitor de la un punct.
Urmează cam 150 de pagini despre bombardamente, deși primele vreo 50 încearcă să ne introducă în atmosfera acelor clipe înainte să sune alarma. Personajele fug dintr-o parte în alta. Vedem bombardamentele – sau mai degrabă urmările lor – prin ochii lor. Ce gândesc, unde merg, ce stricăciuni văd, ce decid să facă în momentele de groază. A treia parte este despre ce a urmat: refugiați, reconstrucție, dezbateri asupra legalității (doar menționate), memorie etc.
Pentru o carte atât de consistentă, abordarea mi se pare superficială. Autorul nu intră aproape deloc în dezbaterile filosofice, legale, morale. Le menționează, într-adevăr, dar observăm că dezvoltarea argumentelor părților nu este deloc scopul lui.
Campania de bombardamente a Aliaților a stârnit multe controverse și în timpul războiului, dar și după. La sfârșitul războiului, s-a și evitat să se vorbească despre ea. Dar la momentul desfășurării ei, existau argumente puternice care au motivat-o. Dacă la început, bombardierele se concentrau asupra obiectivelor strategice, la un moment dat s-au luat în considerare și obiective civile – o bombardare nediscriminatorie – pentru slăbirea moralului. Dezbaterile morale și etice care au urmat sunt din cauza faptului că efectele nu au putut fi măsurate. În cazul bombelor atomice, de exemplu, care au folosit un argument similar, s-a văzut că au pus punct războiului din Pacific (la momentul respectiv, americanii estimau că și-au salvat sute de mii de soldați, care ar fi participat la o invazie convențională a Japoniei). În cazul Dresdei (dar și a altor orașe, pentru că au existat orașe germane bombardate cu o rată a distrugerii mai mare și mai tragică), nu s-au văzut efecte imediate. Păcat că această carte nu intră în aceste dezbateri, ci doar re-povestește niște mărturii.

Evoluția ei nu este liniară, în sensul în care suntem noi obișnuiți, în baza a ceea ce știm despre specia umană. Ci sare etape sau unele vin înaintea altora (radioul apare înainte roții, de exemplu). Ne dă un pic peste cap preconcepțiile. Apar și considerații filosofice, religioase, antropologice. Chiar interesant.
Cealaltă vine din ruinele rasei umane, care a fost deja de câteva ori foarte aproape de dispariție. Și aici e interesant să vezi cum se dezvoltă societatea umană și decade, ca într-o curbă sinusoidală.
Nu a fost o lectură rea. Deși există și o continuare, romanul poate fi citit și de sine stătător.

He started identifying arms and weapons used in Syria, documenting use of arms from former Yugoslavia, Russian cluster munitions and, eventually, chemical weapons. His blog started getting some traction and Higgins started to get invited to write for some respectable publishers and to appear on TV. This part of the story reminded me of projects like ISW, Ukraine Weapons Tracker, OSINTtechnical and the likes, which I started following after the Russian invasion in Ukraine, not knowing that similar projects where established a decade before when other conflicts were taking place.
Higgins then details some big investigations that made Bellingcat what it is today. From a small group of self-taught passionate internet users, it became a serious investigative platform that connects people throughout the world, breaking news before mainstream media and before law-enforcement. I first came to know of them after the downing of the MH17 by Russian-backed separatists in Eastern Ukraine and started following them more closely after they identified the GRU officers from the Skripal case. They did and do, to this day, a remarkable job. I appreciate that they publish their tools, guides, and spread their methodology so that other passionate people can begin investigating issues that they care about.
They give me some hope, or at least Higgins, the way he writes, makes me hopeful that the fight with disinformation is not lost. Truth still matters....more

So, what we thought is a thing of the past is not back in our lives: fascism. Instead of fighting it, we are hoping it will go away. People look at fascism now like they did after WW2, as a failed movement. They try today to analyse it using the same frameworks they did 50-60-70 years ago. But fascism now is very much different because the world we live in has changed. We have technology, the internet, rights, freedoms, an economic model that is dying, divided societies. Paul Mason is trying to tell us what to do. But before he does that, he tells us how to recognise fascism and how it came to be in the interwar period.
How to we recognise fascism? The fascist mythology nowadays, according to Mason, is spread through five key narratives: the great replacement theory (which wraps together racism, anti-feminism and hostility to the left: the left is promoting immigration and feminism, immigration leads to ‘genocide’ of the white race, feminists contribute to it by refusing to have children); liberalism is the enemy (this includes disdain to liberal democracy which promotes rights, immigration, which makes it hard to expel the ‘invaders’, meaning that democracy is bad and must be replaced); ‘cultural Marxist’ is destroying the West because it promotes free speech, homosexuality, immigration, women’s rights and so on; spread these ideas in the networks populated by people angry with their own lives, easily manipulated and converted; and wait for Day X, a catastrophe that will purify society and traditional gender roles (this day will come after multiple crises that will trigger a decisive phase: a civil war, an insurrection etc).
Why is this mythology spreading? Because society now faces multiple crises, which interact in unexpected ways. We have an economic model that no longer works, evaporating support for democracy, a crisis of technological control, meaning that some states and businesses are using information networks to suppress the truth and deter rational thinking, we have a post-Covid world and, looming above it all, a coming climate catastrophe.
People can’t understand the world they live in anymore. Before 2008, people could buy a house, pay their mortgage in three years, have a decent wage and a nice life. They had a predictable, secure life. Now, the same things are almost unaffordable. They have no one to blame, because those who control aspects of their lives are unreachable; they can’t protest their corporation, can’t yell at some multi-billion company for increasing their rent, can’t stop using Google or Facebook when they spread lies, so they take out their anger on groups that are reachable: women, minorities, immigrants. They feel that these groups, who are now becoming free, are the reason for the decline in their living standards. For Mason, fascism now is a fear of freedom driven by a glimpse of freedom, by which he means that fascists fear the freedom of others. But they also fear their own freedom, showing that most fascists would welcome a strongman leader or an authoritarian regime.
From the dawn of capitalism to the mid-1980s, workers’ lives were dominated by a single economic relationship – that with their boss. Today there are multiple relationships of exploitation which overlap and collide. As a result, it has become much harder to identify who is exploiting us. The top 0.1 per cent in every country are part of a globalized, super-rich stratum whose wealth is based primarily on rent-seeking and finance – and most of our lives do not bring us into any form of contact with them.
Instead it has become easier to identify somebody lower down the ladder as responsible for your own poverty and powerlessness: the buy-to-let landlord, the staff at the benefits office, the call centre worker at your bank; the person in the queue at the doctor’s surgery who speaks a foreign language; the security guard at the supermarket telling you to wear a face mask.
The answer to what we should do to stop the spread of fascism is simple: we should act and not stay idle. It won’t go away just by hoping it would. Fascists are active, vocal, so we should be too. We should take it to the streets and to the internet to show that we disagree, that we are not complacent. Online, we should fight the anonymous disinformation, hate speech and calls for crime and genocide. In the streets, if necessary, we should literally fight the fascists.
We live in atomized societies. We have different interests, principles, values. It is hard for large numbers of people to coagulate around a common goal but we should try. We should also pressure our politicians to do so. In the 1930s, different parties could not find common ground to cooperate. They were too stuck in their ways and their ideologies. But against fascism, cooperation is worthy, because if we/they fail to come together, we can lose everything.
The book is more detailed than that. The chapters on history, on the rise of Mussolini and Hitler, are very clear and well-structured. From there, it is easier to come to the present and understand the similarities, and, more importantly, the differences between then and now.

Dennis Deletant, pe care nu am avut ocazia să-l citesc până acum (shame on me, I guess), dar care pare un nene drăguț și un bun specialist, își scrie bine amintirile legate de România. Nici prea complicat, nici prea simplu. Dar nu întotdeauna reușește să se despartă de stilul academic, didactic. Povestește niște întâmplări foarte interesante, deși cu un aer de nepăsare, parcă nu ar fi fost mare lucru. Pe unele insistă nițel mai mult, dovadă că l-au impresionat. Anume acestea ar putea părea banale, dar nu sunt prin sensul pe care le atribuie autorul. Are amintiri legate de România ceaușistă, Securitate, călătoriile lui prin țară și contactele lui în acea perioadă, are și amintiri despre perioada de după Revoluție, în România și în Moldova, după declararea independenței. Are și umor. Insistă pe unele personaje mai răsunătoare cu care a interacționat și cărora le desenează niște nuanțe în portretele deja existente. Ultimul capitol, o părere personală despre ce este și ce a ajuns România, mi s-a părut cel mai bun. E un fel de eseu, o sinteză scurtă, o radiografie a României și a ce nu merge bine.

Începe cu niște povestiri anecdotice cu personaje aproape exotice: Aliona, o tânără în căutarea unui forbs (afacerist în topul Forbes) care s-o ia drept amantă și care merge la cursurile unei „academii” de vânătoare de averi; Vitali, un gangster din Vladivostok care face filme amatoricești despre gangsteri, aproape autobiografice, difuzate de televiziunile locale de frica amenințărilor, venit la Moscova, unde se dă la fund trăind în mașină; Benedict, un consultant care încearcă să-și ofere serviciile în Rusia anilor '90 și care nu învăță nici după mulți ani că lucrurile nu funcționează cum crede el. Trece apoi la povești mai sumbre, chiar tragice: despre o tânără antreprenoare care a nimerit în mijlocul unor răfuieli între servicii; despre un tip care încearcă să salveze de la demolare clădiri vechi; un afacerist care dă petreceri extravagante; despre fotomodele care s-au sinucis după ce au urmat cursurile unui guru (fondator de sectă). Toate acestea sunt împletite cu contextualizări, prezentări și meditații mai largi despre modul în care merg lucrurile în Rusia și cum gândesc rușii, în special cei care au știut sau caută să se descurce.
Fiind producător la postul de divertisment THT (mă gândesc cu duioșie la prostiile pe care le vedeam cu drag la acest post, în copilărie, și cu amuzament la documentarele despre care spune Pomerantsev că le-a făcut, parcă dintr-un alt univers decât grila obișnuită a THT), venit de la Londra, lucru mai important decât orice altceva din CV-ul lui și care îi deschidea multe uși, a văzut multe. Moscova descrisă de el este o insulă. Ne spune chiar autorul că într-un fel arată lucrurile în Moscova, altfel în restul țării. Despre asta am citit și la Ben Judah, în Fragile Empire, fiind unul din puținii care au intuit această diferență și care au încercat să o studieze mai bine, de asta nici nu m-a mirat să citesc la final că Judah a fost editorul lui Pomerantsev pentru această carte.
Moscova e un oraș care-i atrage pe toți: afaceriști, gangsteri, birocrați, artiști, parveniți, fete ușoare, adolescente naive, toți ridicați dintr-o mentalitate sovietică, încă existentă, departe de a dispărea, pentru că nici nu se dorește acest lucru, în care fiecare spune una și face alta, în care fiecare trebuie să vorbească mai multe limbi (nu străine, ci valorice), natural, fără să se prefacă și fără să le pară că se prefac, adoptând două sau mai multe sisteme de valori în același timp. Moscova e locul în care se înghesuie toate gusturile și lipsa lor, toate extravaganțele, toate stilurile arhitecturale, toate modurile de gândire, toată bogăția petro-oligarhilor, corupția, crima și decadența. Ca să împrumut o metaforă a autorului, Moscova – și Rusia de astăzi în general, din perspectiva mentalității colective –, este o oglindă stricată a Occidentului, un sistem de valori pe invers.
Din experiențele autorului, vedem și felul în care funcționează controlul politic asupra societății. Rusia e ca un reality-show regizat. Cineva la Kremlin vine și dă săptămânal indicații marilor televiziuni. Săptămâna asta unii lovesc în cineva, alții în altcineva, cuvintele cheie vor fi următoarele, Putin trebuie să fie văzut așa etc. Nimic nu e adevărat, totul este un spectacol, o simulare în care cineva are puterea de a schimba percepții cu un simplu pocnit din degete. Actori și figurați există oriunde. Nici divertismentul nu scapă. Oamenii nu au nevoie de adevăr pentru că adevărul e urât și deprimant, dar și incomod pentru cel de la putere.
Este o carte care merită citită. Are în ea ridicol, dramatic, tragic, filozofic. Anecdote, povești, monologuri, reportaje.
Nu mi-a plăcut doar că de multe ori autorul pare să evite să dea nume, chiar dacă e vorba de Putin sau alți politicieni, deși alteori oferă aceste nume. Nu am înțeles de ce.
For the longest time I believed I have read this novel as a kid. There is just so much Crusoe in popular culture, that it altered my memory. I did have a translated copy, but now I think that that was a retold version for a younger audience. It came as a surprise to me, while reading, that this is my first time doing so, for I love Robinsonades and survival novels/movies.
There are so many ways to interpret Defoe’s novel that I don’t know where to begin. Robinson Crusoe starts off as a self-discovery text, becomes a survival novel, a religious one, ends up an adventure. My first priority was the aspect of survival on an uninhabited island. Crusoe as a castaway having to fend off for himself was why I wanted to read it and why I read this kind of novels in the first place. In a way, the experience was disappointing. 28 years on an island and never to completely venture inside the island or on the other side is just wrong. Such a rich island, never to be fully taken advantage of. Of course, Crusoe was content with what he had. He only ate, hunted, grew, gathered what he needed. He was in perfect relation with nature. But I couldn’t imagine eating just goat, fowl (wild, not domesticated, for eggs at least), rice, barley, a turtle once in a while, milk, raisins (not fresh grapes, and not wine) and a few other fruits that he barely mentions. Given the resources at his disposal, he is satisfied with very little and I wonder how did he not get bored or sick with his lack of nutritional diversity. He is on an island and he rarely eats fish. There are many little details which bothered me. It’s safe to say that I have read better novels in this genre, inspired by Crusoe, where survival and adaptation to a new environment are better illustrated. 28 years of survival on an island should have offered more. Should have told us about the hardships of solitude (he’s had two dogs, parrots, and cats, but he doesn’t seem too fond of them, for he rarely mentions them and their importance), the psychological toll of always being alone, of madness, of need for human contact. 28 years should have offered us much much more than unspectacular time jumps.
I see Crusoe as a man living man’s natural history in a fishbowl. Locke would have been pleased to some extent to read Defoe. Crusoe, on his island, is a savage in a primitive natural state. He gathers, then hunts, then takes up agriculture and domestication of livestock. He builds a shelter. He starts making simple tools. Then manufactures more complex ones. (Crusoe was lucky. He salvaged a lot from the shipwreck. Still, he was highly unskilled, reduced to a primitive level.) He lives freely, with little to worry. There are no wild animals and no threats to his security so far. But he gets sick. He discovers God. He then discovers he may not be alone on the island. He begins to live in fear. For many years, he constantly looks over his shoulder. He has seen a footprint and he knows other men must be bad news. He then finds a companion. He rescues him because he needs him, life alone is hard to bear. There are two of them now and there are some basic rules. One rules and one is ruled. Had he stayed on the island he would have probably built a society. But he skips this step, he escapes (back) to civilization.
The religious part of the novel is a product of Crusoe 17th century Englishness. Enlightenment is in full force. Crusoe is undertaking a change spiritually. He is not religious but then finds deliverance by himself. His experiences are the ones that enlighten him, not anyone else. He gets sick in the first year and then he feels better. His life is spared so there must be a God. He never gets sick in the following 27 years, so he must have been right.
Another aspect of Crusoe’s Englishness is his imperialistic view on others. Joyce called Crusoe the embodiment of British imperialism (“the true prototype of the British colonist, as Friday is the symbol of the subject races”). Crusoe is the king, the governor of his island, his dominion, and Friday is always a creature, a savage, a slave, a subject, a servant, a cannibal. (I still can’t fathom that Crusoe, and Defoe respectively, believed that cannibals only eat other humans, and that they have never tasted anything else. I understand it still was a time of discoveries, but surely no one is that set in his beliefs, in his exceptionalism, to believe that.) Friday needs saving. He needs to be converted in a model Christian. If Crusoe found God by himself, Friday needs teaching. Crusoe undertakes now another role, that of a (European) missionary. He lingers if other cannibals should be pointed towards the right ways. There is some cultural relativism that he sees, but nevertheless he concludes that his way is the right way. His way is the absolute standard of morality.
The adventure in the end was meh. He had to get out, but not necessarily this way. I guess Defoe, as any other writer, wanted to appeal to all kinds of different readers so they would buy his book.
I won’t say Defoe is a great writer. He definitely had ideas, but his execution was hurried and full of inconsistencies. He didn’t seem to research much of what he was writing. He writes in a time where information travels by word of mouth, but still, just hearing something is not enough to use it. The island is carefully set in the Caribbean, but somehow there are penguins there. The chronology of Crusoe’s stay on the island is full of errors. Although Crusoe specifies multiple times that his calculations are off only by one day, his memories are off by years in some instances.
Reading this in its original English was a gruesome experience. I should have stuck with a translated, modern version....more

Eu însă am ales să-l citesc pentru că în nota pentru Starea de asediu, Camus menționează că Jurnalul din anul ciumei ar fi trebuit să fie sursă de inspirație atunci când lui Jean-Louis Barrault i-a venit ideea unei piese de teatru despre mitul ciumei. În final, Camus nu s-a mai folosit de romanul (nu știu exact cum să-l clasific și se pare că nu sunt singurul) lui Defoe și nici de romanul propriu, ci a inventat ceva nou.
Pe scurt: epidemie, boală, moarte, panică, predicatori ai apocalipsei, optimiști, nepăsători, negaționiști, inconștienți, experți autoproclamați, pseudo-medici, leacuri minune, vrăjitorii, distanțare socială, frică, neîncredere, suspiciune, reguli, carantină, autoizolare, baricadare, lucrători esențiali, buletine săptămânale, străzi goale, oameni care nu pot sta în casă, exod din orașe, stoparea activității economice, șomaj, izolare internațională, oprirea comerțului, donații, empatie, crimă. Acestea și încă multe altele fac evidentă paralela cu pandemia.
Jurnalul este un text lung, cumva cronologic, cu multe digresiuni, despre ciuma londoneză din 1665 (cu un an înainte de marele incendiu din Londra... o serie de tragedii teribile), când a murit aproape un sfert din populația orașului. A fost publicat în 1722, când se auzea despre o altă ciumă în Europa. Comportamentul oamenilor nu s-a schimbat mult între timp.

Picked it because it is marketed as Christie’s best novel and it is safe to say now I won’t read more Agatha Christie going forward, maybe just when I am in a pickle to choose something for another three-hour flight.
I don’t usually read books about Russia because I don’t need to actually, I have lived my life in its shadow, so there is little I have to discover abI don’t usually read books about Russia because I don’t need to actually, I have lived my life in its shadow, so there is little I have to discover about it. This one came recommended. It is impressive how an author so young, in his early twenties at the time the book was published, and so foreign, could understand Russia so well. The book is well-structured and well-researched, it is topical, but also chronological. It is ambitious, but it delivers what it promises. I would consider it more of an opinion book than a rigorously researched scientific one, but regardless as to how Judah comes to his conclusions, they are correct (as far as I can judge). He is very good at reading the mood inside Russia. He says he has travelled far and wide and has come in contact with thousands of Russians. It shows. Be they a thousand or a hundred Russians, he manages to understand what they think and what they want, ultimately reading between the lines, from what is not said at times, rather from they are comfortable saying.
I will not go into much detail, because Russia is both complicated and simple really. There is an authoritarian regime, with a president/dictator/tsar, a court and a clientele – a plutocracy perhaps –, detached from the people, their wants and needs, reliant on natural resources and the high prices of oil and gas. Although it keeps the illusion of democracy, with many gradually opening their eyes thanks to the internet and capitalism, it has the tools of silencing the voices of dissent. The more people try to speak, the tighter the grip gets. It seems as Russians are doomed to make the same mistakes, to live through the same cycles of history.
Judah analyses Putin’s rise to power up until 2012, when he came back after an intermezzo, and argues that, slow but steady, Russians are falling out of love with him. He does not say when their dissatisfaction will start boiling – he is very cautious in this regard, as time moves slower in Russia due to a number of factors. 10 years after the book was published, with a full-on illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine, the grip on power, on the resources and on the people seems strong still.
For those who want to understand how modern Russia came to be, how many Russias are inside its vastness, how every-day Russians live and think, this book is the right one. I will forgive Judah’s long metaphors and the descriptions of all the cafes he’s had conversations in (not at all times relevant) and will put them down to his young age....more

The author asks, somehow, how much free will can/should you give up for the good of the society? I don’t know. We are born in a society and we are conditioned by it, and as much as we might want complete freedom, we can’t live outside of society. We compromise on free will for our own good. Or so it should be.
Another main theme made me think about the merits of the behaviourist theory. I am not a psychologist and I don’t know much about it, but classical conditioning as a tool just seems evil. Here comes the question of free will vs. society once again.
In the end, I don’t exactly know what Burgess’ message was though. He went from telling me that behaviour is a product of environment, to saying that human nature is inescapable, just to end the book with the protagonist as a hopeful constructivist study-case.
Life and art, the interdependence between these two - another interesting idea. Art is a form of escape, it detaches us from life, but it also gives us life (?). It is a complicated relation, with art being responsible for both good and evil in people.
Many have focused on language. The slang the narrator uses didn’t impress me; it was just a nuisance. It irritated me much. Thank God or Bog that I know some Russian and could understand this horrorshow.
As just a story about a violent teen, this should be viewed as a product of its time. Alex today would probably be very different. ...more

He takes on popular culture, science-fiction, strategical analysis, academia etc. It seems that everyone, everywhere, misses the point when predicting how the next war will look. They tend to focus on some parts and ignore others. When looking at the next war, be it for strategic planning or fiction, somehow they are always stuck in the past, unable to see that the future might look different (even with all the necessary data available).
