When everyone was first pushing the Raven Cycle, I wasn't buying it. I was not interested at all. BOY, WAS I WRONG! I am so wrapped up in the characters and the magic. It's like an addictive tv show more than a series to me. The figurative language in this series is just 12/10, honestly. I'd find myself going back to reread a passage again and again because it was just so good. One other thing that I adored is that this felt like a continuation of the last book. There was enough connecting the two that I could just dive back in where I left off, rather than having to go all the way back to the start.
Also, this is the first time after my mini-slump that I sat down and read a TON. I read about 300 pages in a day with barely any interruption, so my experience with this book was heightened even more.
I cannot WAIT for Blue Lily, Lily Blue (though the title does seem a bit out of place). Also, Ronan's getting a trilogy?!? Not sure how I feel?!?

Since these are sequels i dont have a proper star rating review, but I think Sarah J. Maas' writing gets exponentially better every book. Queen of Shadows isnt necessarily my favourite (i dont even know which that would be), but I think it's certainly one of the, if not the, best so far.
Some scenes that stood out: (view spoiler)[My favourite scene was when Manon and Aelin fought. It was so intense and dramatic and said a lot about the characters. Then there was the part near the end when Lysandra is a ghost leopard and Nesryn saves her. I didn't think it was Nesryn at first, I thought it was Chaol or Aedion. It hit me during this part how feministic this series is. Yes, its about a female assassin. Yes, there's a clan of super-powerful witches. But that scene really made me realize that the girls in these books save each other. Kaltain slaying everybody also applies^^ I really liked the flashback scenes to Aelin's childhood. That may have been in HoF, but either way, those were interesting to read. THE CLIMACTIC FIGHT SCENE IN THE GLASS CASTLE AND THEN DORIAN BLOWS THE CASTLE APART AND AELIN SAVES THE PEOPLE BY MELTING THE GLASS INTO A WALL AROUND THE CASTLE THAT WAS SO COOL (hide spoiler)]
Some thoughts on the characters: (view spoiler)[ Aelin was a bad-a, as always. I really liked how she was always Aelin in this book to show how she'd grown into being Aelin again. Aedion is so great, he needs more screen time! When he's imprisoned and he's trying to "kill himself" I was dying along with him. Rowan is so suave. I don't understand why so many people don't ship him and Aelin more. Yeah, Chaol is the better person, but does she deserve him? Haven't they grown apart? They don't fit each other anymore like Rowan and Aelin do. (I'm just glad I don't have to share Chaol anymore XD) I just really enjoyed reading from him. Chaol was barely in this book and i cri evritim Demon!Dorian was so stressful i stg at first I didn't realize we were reading from him and when I did I think I hyperventilated. Lysandra was a BOSS. I'm glad Aelin has another girl friend. Nesryn... who even is she? She's in like two scenes and all of a sudden I'm supposed to ship her with Chaol? Nah, honey, that's not how that works. Elide is going to be such a cool character to read from in Empire of Storms. Honestly so pumped for her character to develop. (At first I didn't realize she was who she was. That was a really great "oh yeah" moment) Kaltain was intense and a half! When she killed all the demons, demon witchlings and captive witches and sacrificed herself, ooh. AND MANON. MAH HOMEGIRL. SHE IS THE GREATEST PERSON EVER I WANT TO COSPLAY AS HER SO BADLY. HER JUST SLAYING ALL THESE DEMONS TO GET ELIDE OUT OF THERE WAS SO SATISFYING. AS WAS MY FAV SCENE WHEN SHE FIGHTS AELIN IN THE TEMPLE. HER DEVELOPMENT. UGH. (hide spoiler)]

While I did not like this as much as I did Since You've Been Gone, it's a close second. (There's a cameo of Emily and Dawn in this book, ahhh!) I liked Emily better as a protagonist because I related to her more and I liked the playlists as well, but there were a couple of things I liked in this one better. The absent dad coming back into her life, the fluctation of the friend group. Oh, and Clark is pretty close to my ideal guy. Overall, this was a fun read, and I didn't expect (haha) to like it as much as I did! I have Since You've Been Gone on my to-buy list, and I just might add this to it, too....more

I took off a star only because it was a difficult read. I had to sit in silence to read it, and still I was slow. (Also there was one phrase about rape that has been haunting me since i read it and its honestly terrifying) It was not an exceedingly enjoyable book, but it was so important. Both The Wicked Will Rise and Yellow Brick War were about half the size of the original, so right off the bat I wasn't pleased. Let's get into what I did and didn't like about this book. (Don't worry, the former won't be long.)
There was like one line that I liked in this book that gave me hope for it.
Suddenly, I thought of my mom. Magic for me was as destructive as pills had been for her. The same addiction - and the same results. I'd fallen in love with the power the way she'd fallen in love with oblivion. I'd hated her for what her addiction had done to her - to us - but was I really any different?
This little bit of moral ambiguity was great. I thought it would be more of a focus, maybe the thought would cross Amy's mind whenever she did something crazy. But nope, not really.
This novel was exactly 270 pages long. For the story Paige was trying to tell, I feel like the novel should have been extended. It's almost as if she wrote this as a first draft and never went back to double check that the pacing was right. (Also, there were two different times where there were two periods in a row like this: word.. Next sentence. So I might not be too far off!)
The dialogue from the characters did not seem consistent or realistic. Not much to say here, but too many lines seemed out of place, and way too many made the characters seem whiny and juvenile.
Some of these characters have what I call "Clara Oswald Syndrome". If you watch Doctor Who, you might know what I'm talking about. A character changes from story to story to better fit the plot, without keeping a steady character. Like Nox, the biggest example of this in this series. He starts off as a standoffish "bad boy" character, and then as soon as Amy gets moony-eyed over him, he turns into a gushy mess. Madison and Dustin, total jerks in the first book, have left no traces of that since they had their baby. That's almost excusable, but it's not very realistic to just be 100% nice to somebody out of the blue. And then Amy pretty much says 8 pages in that she needs to have a man to be happy. She's meant to be a strong female character and then this crap why
What even is magic anymore?!? There is a character that COMES BACK FROM THE DEAD just because the author felt like it. No explanation other than "idk but im pretty hard to kill m8 dwi". There were a couple of magic-related things introduced in this book with no rhyme or reason. There's a new villain introduced and it's only said that "whoops hes evil dunno if u know bout him but he baaad dont listen to him but sometimes do idk". Utterly frustrating.
I'm just glad it took me less than 24 hours to read this. Plus, I had an excuse to listen to my new Wicked soundtrack. I would not recommend reading any further than the first book, and I have no intention of reading her new series (which I was under the impression had mermaids in it I'm not sure), Stealing Snow.

There wasn't a time where i thought things were happening just cause or a character was being annoying for the sake of something plot related. Aliens. I loved the whole alien aspect of this. It was reminiscent of Slaughterhouse-Five, one of my favourite books of all time. LGBTQ+ represented without being the plot or focus of the book, or being the defining characteristic of characters. The blunt way of speaking. The whole first and last chapters are just "we dont matter. nothing matters." I finished this book in two or three sittings. It's the first book I've read in a long time that I wasn't focused on how many pages I had left, I was just dragged into the story. I read around 230 pages in a sitting without pushing myself to read faster or being worried that I wouldn't finish it before I wanted to. I could have finished this in one sitting if I hadn't needed to come inside for dinner.
Love, love, LOVED this book. 12/10, would reccommend. I want to own this book so badly....more

Everyone's nightmares plagued them, which was nice to be seen dealt with well. Not to mention the messages about abusive relationships were on point! My points of suggestion would be that some of the lesser characters felt flat. I wanted so much more from Cassian and Azriel, not that they were the flattest, but that there was a bigger difference between what was meant to happen and what happened in actuality than other characters. I am so happy I'm caught up! Empire of Storms came out today, so I have some more reading to do. TIME TO BINGE...more

Victoria Schwab has quickly become one of my favourite authors. So, when I heard about This Savage Song only about two months in advance, I was surprised, but even more zazzed.

In the United States, the federal government has fallen apart and now dissolved. It's no longer the fifty states, but now the Ten Territories. The worst for crime is Verity, where are story takes place. But something strange has happened there... once a crime has been committed, the sin becomes an entity, one of three monsters, who feed as the rhyme above suggest: the Corsai, made from bad but nonlethal crimes, eat you alive; the Malchai, made from murder, drink your blood like a vampire; the Sunai, made from crimes that are unspeakably terrible, namely homicides, play a song and steal sinner's souls. V-City, the capital of Verity, has been split between two warring families and their followers. The North Side belongs to Harker and his armies of Corsai and Malchai. People in this half pay to be protected, or to have the illusion that they are. His daughter, Kate, is our female protagonist and has just come back to V-City after purposely getting expelled from school after school, trying to get back. The South side is run by Henry Flynn, who has the Sunai on his side. Problem is, there's only three of them. He and his wife have taken them in as his children. There's Ilsa (my FAV), Leo and August, our male protagonist. At the very beginning of this book, his "father" has finally granted his wish to help with the fight against the North by sending him to the school Kate is now attending to spy.
I'm just going to go through what I liked and what I didn't reallllyyy quickly. This is really a 4.5, because Victoria Schwab has a way of writing things that are just so dang enjoyable.
The characters in Schwab's books always drive the story, and I love that so much. I've had quite a few books lately where they're really flat. I could tell that they were what they were solely for the sake of the story, so they were just 2-D. I haven't found that to be the case with Schwab. I'm not going to touch on this too much, but our main characters and the other Sunai (though we don't see them NEARLY as much as I wish we would have; Ilsa is my fav) really seem to be their own people, strong-willed and hardened by reality.
The world was fantastically creative and unique. I mean DUH. MONSTERS. Caused by CRIME. Come ON.
The world is revealed bit by bit, rather than being slapped in the face with information. I hate in books where you get hit over the head with exposition, rather than eased in. The beginning was a smidge confusing, but I think it was worth it.
The themes of belonging and loyalty and being human really resonated with me. Like, just read this quote.
"It hurts," he whispered. "What does?" asked Kate. "Being. Not being. Giving in. Holding out. No matter what I do, it hurts." Kate tipped her head back against the tub. "That's life, August," she said. "You wanted to feel alive, right? It doesn't matter if you're monster or human. Living hurts."
When you can easily put together thoughts on things like existence, it's really super cool and I love it.
I feel like the world wasn't expanded on enough in this installment. There were a few loose ends that just bothered me. There was certainly more room to explain some aspects of the world, but they were missed. This is a little similar to how I felt about The Archived. Maybe it's just her YA books? Not sure. It's a little worrying that this is going to be a duology. I was excited at first, but now I'm wondering if everything that needs to be touched on will be.
Overall, this was SO enjoyable. I will keep an eye out for the second book. In the mean time, I have Death on the Nile and Winger to read. On with #BookTubeAThon2016 !...more

No, this novel was about a person's perception of people; how we romanticize the dead and how we can jump to conclusions in blind rage. This was a great human study. The middle was a little slow, but the last 60 pages or so made up for it, with action, suspense and a clean ending. I enjoyed it, but I feel like I forced myself to read it, so that took a little away from it....more

What a great book to kick off #Booktubeathon2016 ! There were a 2 lesbian, 2 gay and 4 interratial relationships, so I was pretty happy with that. There also seemed to be a lot of these characters with dead/dying parents or siblings. Even one of the main characters was dying! What's up with that? I'm going to rate all of these stories individually. I rated a good portion of them based on how I liked them compared to others.
1. Head, Scales, Tongue, Tail by Leigh Bardugo *** I have read only Shadow and Bone by her. I thought this was a cute little story to start the book off. Gracie lives in a small town that gets tourists in the summer. After she thinks she sees a sea monster in the local lake, she meets Eli, an oddball of a guy who turns up every summer. While this story was very predictable, it was still cute. Some things could have been expanded on, but hey, its a 30 page short story for teenagers.
2. The End of Love by Nina LaCour*** I have read none of her books, but I do intend on reading either Everything Leads to You or The Disenchantments in the future. Flora's parents are going through a divorce, and she is sick of having to be around either of them while they move on with their lives, so she decides to go to summer school, deciding on geometry, even though she is proficient in it. In the class she meets up with some old acquaintances, including Mimi, the girl who made her realize she is lesbian. This story is very relatable (especially with my household right now), but I took of points because it wasn't super memorable. I am not turned off of her writing though. I'll definitely check her out in the future.
3. Last Stand at the Cinegore by Libba Bray***** I have started The Diviners but had to put it down because I was very busy at the time. Kevin is a huge old horror movie geek. He works at the local old horror movie cinema, the Cinegore, with his gay best friend, Dave, and Dani, the girl he has a crush on. The story takes place on the last day the Cinegore is open before it is knocked down to build condos and a Starbucks, so they put on a supposedly "haunted" film for the old place's last hurrah. This story was my favourite! It's everything I want - cute, nerdy, hilarious. This should be a full length book!
4. Sick Pleasures by Francesca Lia Block* I have never heard of Block before reading this anthology. Our main character, I, goes dancing with her friends M, L, and J, when she meets A, a boy that changes her life. This was my least favourite. Frankly, this story was just boring, instalovey, and a bit pretentious. I have heard of another book where the characters are named with letters (WHICH I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS CALLED AND I'M MAD) and I was surprised when this story did it too, hoping it would be as good as I've heard the other was, but no such luck.
5. In Ninety Minutes, Turn North by Stephanie Perkins***** I have read Anna and the French Kiss,Lola and the Boy Next Door, Isla and the Happily Ever After and My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories by Stephanie Perkins. She's right under Rainbow Rowell and tied with Jenny Han for my favourite sweet contemporary authors. This is a continuation from her other story in My True Love Gave To Me. Marigold did move to Atlanta for animation, but North broke up with her right before the move. It's been months since they've talked, but now Marigold has found a way to "rescue" him and help him go to college. Stephanie Perkins has this way of making you physically hurt with cuteness. It doesn't help that North is just about my ideal guy. Lemme check.... yep, pretty much. I actually live in North Carolina, where Perkins' two stories take place, so that's cool for me.
6. Souvenirs by Tim Federle*** I'd never heard of this author before, but oh mY GOD HE WAS IN TUCK EVERLASTING?!? Matty is working at a second-rate amusement park when he falls for Kieth, a theatre guy who works a show next to his souvenir stand. When they hook up and since they know they won't be together when the summer ends, they decide on a "breakup day", which is the day this story takes place. I wasn't a super huge fan of this romance, but it seems Matty wasn't either, so I have a higher appreciation for it. It wasn't any think super memorable, but Matty was so freaking relatable. Maybe I'd have liked it more if it didn't come right after Stephanie Perkins' story.
7. Inertia by Veronica Roth*** I have read the Divergent trilogy and Four: A Divergent Story Collection by Roth. In a near futute, Claire's ex-best friend is dying. Surprisingly, he invites her for a "Last Visitation", where the dying and those close to them revisit memories important to them to say their goodbyes. This was a great concept, but I didn't really connect to the characters very much. There must be some sort of pattern here because that just about sums up my feelings on Divergent (except my distance with these is replaced with anything from mild annoyance to hatred for Divergent characters by the end).
8. Love Is the Last Resort by Jon Skovron** I have never heard of this author before. Basically, a 3 couples are set up at a hotel where half of them work and half of them stay. At first, I really liked this one! I really liked the main girl, Lena, and I liked the whole "dear reader" thing, but after a while, the whole "OH FRANKLYN!" "OH ISABELLA!" crap got on my nerves. It sounded like an bad old movie. Plus, the two main characters knew each other for like 24 hours before they're already like madly in love with each other. Disappointing.
9. Good Luck and Farewell by Brandy Colbert*** I have never heard of this author before. Rashida, whose cousin Audrey (who practically raised her) is moving away with her girlfriend, Gillian. At their go-away party, Gillian gets drunk and Audrey and Gillian's foster brother take her to Audrey's apartment. I thought the topics talked about were very important and well-done, but it should have been expanded on. One problem with your love interests meeting in a short love story is instalove. This wasn't a bad case of it, but enough for me to point it out.
10. Brand New Attraction by Cassandra Clare* I have read all of the Shadowhunters books by this author (a total of 11 books thus far) excluding Lady Midnight, which I cannot read until next month. Basically Lulu works at her father's carnival, or at least it was his, until he just up and left. Her uncle and step-cousin come to help her out. The thing is, this dark carnival is more than it appears. This story was poorly put together. The characters seemed like they were straight out of a bad fanfiction. It just beat out Sick Pleasures as my least favourite because the demon thing was rad.
11. A Thousand Ways This Could All Go Wrong by Jennifer E. Smith**** I have heard of this author's novels, but have no intention of reading them. Annie has a crush on this boy, Griffin, from her Spanish class. When she sees him over summer, they agree to hang out, but when he comes to pick her up from her job as a camp counselor, an autistic boy, Noah, hasn't been picked up yet, so they stay and keep him company and wait for his mom. This was such an important lesson on mental disabilities. I honestly just loved this one a lot. Not much to say.
12. The Map of Tiny Perfect Things by Lev Grossman**** I have read only The Magicians by Grossman. Mark is stuck in time. August 4th has been repeating for what feels like forever, when he meets Margaret, who is stuck in Groundhog Day, too. They wander around town together when they start finding cool, everyday-miracles that they make a map to keep track of them all. This was such a great story! The time and sci-fi element of it was really cool and right up my alley. I was surprised, honestly, because I didn't like The Magicians all that much. Still, very good way to wrap up this anthology.

I don't read a whole lot of proper fantasy, so I'm not super accustomed to reading a series with an original religious background. the only example of that I can think of is the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, which is one of my favourites. also, it's been forever since I read the first one, so I had to reintroduce characters and plotlines to myself. I still don't remember who gwenyth is. the gift was also very vague, so it was sort of sudden when I realized it's just like That's So Raven powers. not a whole lot to say about this one, but I'm enjoying this against my better judgement! When I went to my new public library this week and found it was on the shelf, it was a no-brainer. I finished The Game of Love and Death in two days. It was short and sweet, just like expected. Love and Death were the most curious parts of the book for me, especially Love being characterized as a man and Death as a woman. It was fitting, once I really thought about it. While the two influence characters as you would imagine, they also defy those expectations. Love has the powers to drive people mad if need be, and Death is misunderstood and self-loathing. Henry and Flora were good characters. Nothing about them really irked me, but I believe they could have been more fleshed out than they were. While there are complaints that they did not have enough chemistry, etc, I just think of previous players in the Game, Romeo and Juliet. At least Henry and Flora knew each other for a few months. The themes of homosexuality and race were really the shining parts of the book and I wish they would have been played out more. Ethan was honestly ignored in the last part of the book, which was saddening. This was a cute book and I fully enjoyed the story and the prose.
