Like the kid in “The Sixth Sense” she sees dead people. She doesn’t necessarily want to see dead people, but it’s this ability that offers this girl, from the wrong side of the tracks, a future at Yale University. Full of her own secrets, secret societies and secrets of the dead this is a book with a lot of groundwork to lay. It makes the first half, if not more, vey slow. But after sticking with the story, I can’t fault the slow start. After reached the sweet spot, that made this book an unstoppable read, I could understand and appreciate all the groundwork. I wouldn’t call it a slow burn and it’s not a boring build that would knock my rating down from being a five star, as the slow start did for another 2019 favorite - The River by Peter Heller. It’s all part of a total package yielding a book that I loved. I urge all who would want to put it down to o stick with it. It’s all worthy in the end....more

As a funny for listening every time the character said fat ex police I thought he was going to say FedEx probably because I work for FedEx. I liked the fat ex policeman Bill Hodges. And most people he meets seem to like him too. But not Mr Mercedes, a killer given this moniker after mowing down many people waiting in line for a chance to get jobs in a stolen Mercedes. The book is a cat and mouse type tale as Mr Mercedes toys with Bill and in turn Bill tries to capture Mr Mercedes....more

The tale of the “Ugly Stepsister” involves a bet between characters Fate and Chance for the redemption of Isabelle after her stepsister’s marriage to the Prince.
There is magic in this sad, hard world. A magic stronger than fate, stronger than chance. And it is seen in the unlikeliest of places. By a hearth at night, as a girl leaves a bit of cheese for a hungry mouse.
So where will the magic happen for Isabelle, the ugly stepsister? Read this gem and bask in all the wisdom that abounds. A great story of girl power.

As a reader (or in my case a listener) we have a front row seat to a retelling of Min (short for Minerva) and Ed’s relationship from beginning to the end as Min writes her breakup letter while going through saved mementos she’s returning to Ed. Told with simplicity and a voice of honesty as she goes through memories of her first love. In most cases, we all have been there, but as Min writes this wonderful “why we broke up” letter I know I wish I could have penned a letter like hers, after my first breakup. More power to you Min! What a cute quirky character you are....more

I was quickly sucked into this fast paced story of deception. Told with alternating narrators we meet an unidentified character called “the Other “. Later on, when we think it’s all tied up with a bow - we realize what a great magician Sibel Hodge really is. That’s how good magicians work, their craft— while they have us look left, they are tricking us while we look away. Nothing short of 5 magical stars....more

I may take a while to mellow with the story before jumping into the next one in the series. The writing is good and the characters are worth getting to know - or as I move forward in the series getting to know them better. There is magic, and death and mystery and a hint of love for the character Blue. But for blue it has been foretold that her kiss will kill her one true love. But wait, doesn't love conquer all? I guess I will have to read on to find out....more

The writing was superb. The chapters were long and it took me longer to read it than I would have liked. Each time I started a chapter I was hooked. Maurice, the main character’s motivation for his life stems his childhood. But there are always two sides to interactions with others. And our memories of our life events are not always the same for others that we share the memory with. We don’t know another’s motives and motivations. What shapes the life of one might hardly hold a memory for another. I liked getting to know the people and events that shaped Maurice’s life....more
