I just read the ebook, but I immediately want a copy for my bookshelf! This is the quality stuff you force your friends to read and they thank you for it. 5/5 stars of soul food.
April 28, 2022: I finally bought and reread this gem, and it was just as beautiful as the first time. I am only now realizing that it’s been almost exactly a year since I first found and read it. Now I am going to do as I said in 2021 and force my mom to do the same. ...more
As soon as I let my dad know that I started this weird book found in our shared Audible account, he started gushing about his love for Yahtzee CroshawAs soon as I let my dad know that I started this weird book found in our shared Audible account, he started gushing about his love for Yahtzee Croshaw, and shortly after I found an email with one of his YouTube videos in my inbox. Soon I found out why. This book was not only genuinely, laugh-out-loud hilarious, but also had a thorough plot that I would have been invested in regardless. The writing was also fantastic and I kept noting some of the greatest similes I’ve ever heard. It had a good narrative flow, making it hard to put down, and I’d bet if this book was actually about zombies rather than flesh-eating strawberry jam it would be far more popular. But seriously, why would you not want to read about the jam instead? To make my personal experience more amazing, I had the pleasure of listening to the author himself narrate it, which added another dimension I’m not sure would exist on a written page. To hear the true interpretation and tone of each character (like only speaking monotone, or ending every sentence like a question?) made this far funnier than it would have been otherwise. I noticed the fantastic narration right from the start, before I realized who it even was. It was only when I thought “dang, this guy is good” and went to see who he was (and thus what other narrations he did) when I saw the name. I will definitely be reading more of his works now, but I am so impressed that I honestly don’t think this can be beat. ...more

I can’t believe it’s slipped past me this whole time. I never would have read it unless my best friend recommended it to me. I listened to the full cast production via audiobook and it definitely improved the experience. It’s hard for me to believe that this is the same man who wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray—but The Importance of Being Earnest will remain a favorite. ...more

I took a chance on this book because I’m one of the most squeamish people you’ll ever meet, so I really appreciate that it wasn’t too nitty gritty with medical details and remained largely focused on ethics! This will remain a favorite. ...more

That being said: everyone should read this book. It is essential knowledge and an honest, firsthand account of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. I never would have came across this book if it hadn’t been for my biology class about disease in modern society, and it has completely changed my worldview (I hope my professor liked my “tear-counts” in the notes I took). Seriously, I want to scream the name of this book from the mountaintops. It is a call for change. A call for action. If you are thinking about reading this book, just do it. ...more
What a fantastic read! This book has already been passed around between my best friend, me, and my sister (who is currently reading it), because it’s What a fantastic read! This book has already been passed around between my best friend, me, and my sister (who is currently reading it), because it’s a work of art that simply must be shared with others. Beyond any social or political commentary you could draw from it, which we did thoroughly enjoy, it is a cute little story developed through letters being sent back and forth. It’s very unique and I can only imagine how much time and effort the author put into the masterpiece that is Ella Minnow Pea; the entire concept is fascinating and developed so well. Letters of the alphabet being banned one by one, and because the book is written through letters, the alphabet slowly begins to disappear as you read it. Sometimes so subtle, you don’t even notice it, and then are astounded that there hasn’t been a single “D” in the last chapter at all. I have already used that letter six times in this review. The book is absolute genius. ...more

It is filled with hidden treasures and the story is woven together so beautifully and intricately. It took me quite some time to read, and normal circumstances I would say “I wish I had read this sooner,” but I’m glad I got to truly take my time savoring this story. Yes, it is one of the longest novels in history, thus it can certainly drag on at times, but the life lessons I have picked up from reading it are well worth the time and effort. I feel as if my very soul has been touched and I take pieces of this story with me everywhere I go- particularly the story of Jean Valjean, the bishop, and the candlestick. It is definitely awe inspiring in the musical, but I was overwhelmed to the point of tears reading the text. As a Christian I also love how God is written in almost as a character in the story, following wherever Valjean goes and how Hugo mentions Him ever so casually. It’s refreshing. There are so many things I could expand on but I will just say that Les Misérables lived up to all of my expectations and will remain one of my favorite books of all time- it is astounding.
PS- I had been simultaneously reading “52 Little Lessons from Les Miserables” by Bob Welch while also reading the classic. It made my experience so much better! What a touching little book filled with actual life lessons that Les Mis teaches us and how to apply them. It was kind of like a bible study/character analysis to go along with the original book. I bought myself a copy and then it was so wonderful that I had to give my best friend one for her birthday too. ...more
