That I appreciate what Murphy went through and think this book is valuable for a "boots on the ground" perspective of what it's like to be a soldier. That said, it wasn't particularly informative about the war other than "it's hell", something I certainly expected. I imagine that as a war hero and people back home imagining how glorious it all was, that he just wanted to get some things off his back....more

I think this works well as perhaps a bedtime story. The continuing adventures of characters we know and love. But it moves so slowly! Case in point: our heroes are going to school and learning how to be a dog master, or an archer, or to sneak. That's great but this is book three and they started journeying to this place in book one!
So if you're captivated by the characters then I think this book series will be excellent. But the plot takes quite a while to build up and meanders quite a bit before it gets on its way....more

The opening lines paint a picture in scents and I was immediately hooked on the theme. I knew this was going to be a unique book. The lead protagonist is grotesque and one pities him for his very difficult beginnings and admires his incredible abilities. Amazing book....more

I hunted around and apparently Christie thought it was one of her worst books so I don't feel bad for agreeing. Still, Christie's worst books are better than many authors's best!...more

He is a reasonable voice that counters what he sees as a bias that is not backed up by data. Some of his writing may come off as reactionary but I think he is trying to counterbalance the pendulum that has swung too far in one direction.
Some of his arguments might be questioned. Some undoubtedly are worth considering. And all of them are thought-provoking and hopefully can lead to useful discussion rather than shutting it down based on ideology. ...more
