Not enough interactions with the secondary characters. The way characters talk now comes off as juvenile in my opinion. The sex is... fine. I skimmed a lot while reading this. Honestly this should have been part of the previous book. A trilogy would have been better...more

I thought about giving it 3 stars because I didn't like it as much as the first one in romance or politics. The latter actually makes up 80% of the book and while I loooove political drama, there were points where it dragged the story.
I'm maintain the 4 stars because I love spaceship action and also the neuromodifications/"magic" system was a great element of the story. I was also not in love with the MCs as I was in Winter's Orbit. I couldn't find a reason why I should root for them to get together.
All in all, I am still very much intrigued by this author and I will continue to keep an eye out for her books. ...more

Two can play that game....more

So I wasn’t going to read this because up until now I HATED Nesta. However, I was in the mood for sexy times and considering the hype surrounding this, my hand was basically forced.
Thankfully, Nesta was not a bitch in this one. She was only behaving like a toddler and I’m great with kids. As a result, I was able to ignore her until she finally became a human being.
I really liked the friendship between Nesta and the other two girls. I honestly didn’t expect something like that to be included and it was nicely developed so points for that!
The sex was…fine. I would have preferred if Cassian didn’t dirty talk like Rhysand did (I actually didn’t want any dirty talk from him at all). Still, I was entertained and I managed to scratch successfully the porn itch.
Other than that, up to the middle of the book I didn’t care at all about the (minimal) plot so I was just keep going thanks to the smutt but then curiously after the middle I started ignoring those scenes because I wanted to go back and see the girls developing their bond. Can you tell the friendship took me by surprise?
Last but not least, I don’t know if Nesta’s “journey” to self-healing was good or not so I can’t help those of you who look forward to this element. Frankly I didn’t care enough to even pay attention. I was just glad she wasn’t a bitch.
Anyway, I guess if you like Cassian and want to see what the future brings for the ACOTAR gang you should continue. I think had the others (Feyre, Rhysand, Amren etc) not been included, the story wouldn’t have worked AT ALL for me.
I got what I expected from the author more or less. ...more

I’m aware that it’s been some time since I finished this but I am experiencing the opposite of a severe reading slump and I couldn’t let reviews stand between me and that newly found exhilaration.
As you can see from my rating I found it to be mediocre. We are no longer following the characters from A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. In fact, they aren’t even in the story apart from some random mentions from the new characters.
It is still very much a slice of life story but note that it’s no longer a space opera. We follow two timelines, one from Pepper when she was a little girl and one from Sidra as she tries to get used to her new body. Both take place in a planet so there are no fun spaceship stuff.
I think you’ll like this a lot if identity exploration and finding one’s purpose in life are elements that you enjoy. If you don’t care about those things then it’s not for you just like it wasn’t for me.
What I loved in the first book was the attention that was given to the friendships, the sense of belonging to a found family as well as getting to know all the different alien species that exist and hopping from planet to planet.
A Closed and Common Orbit is the exact opposite of that. The focus is on the individuals, their inner struggles and information about life outside the place they reside in is minimal.
On the other hand I know people who absolutely loved it and I think it’s because they could relate to the characters, so if you can do that then you’ll love this.
Personally I didn’t relate and I didn’t find them interesting enough to care about their journey. I will read the third book though....more
