- Penelope Douglas is certainly a very brave author.
- Her writing style is also exceptional.
- Those sex scenes were so vividly written I got extremely flustered and was annoyed I wasn't by myself in the house...
- Towards the end, I think she should have committed to the poly thing. The final love interest comes a bit out of nowhere.
- Hooked. I guess I don't need sleep.
- There was drama but somehow I expected even more drama.
- Don't read this unless you can leave behind your sensibilities and common sense. It is obvious that these characters are all walking red flags. Just don't date such people irl and enjoy getting out of your comfort zone here...more

1. The first half is really really good and the second half very dull 2. The men's worshiping of the two women became annoying. 3. I was very happy when Mina appeared and had an active role in what was going on. Then she was reduced to a crying baby and pampered constantly by Van Helsing. 4. It was definitely atmospheric and had so many horror elements. Definitely a book you read during the night. 5. Dracula should have had a bigger part in the later half of the book because he was a fantastic character. 6. The writing is relatively easy for a book written in the 1800s. 7. Should you decide to read this (or even if you don't) please take the time to research the actual story that inspired Stoker because his book is full of misinformation and he kind of butchered a country's actual history because he didn't bother to do the research.

I’m aware that it’s been some time since I finished this but I am experiencing the opposite of a severe reading slump and I couldn’t let reviews stand between me and that newly found exhilaration.
As you can see from my rating I found it to be mediocre. We are no longer following the characters from A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. In fact, they aren’t even in the story apart from some random mentions from the new characters.
It is still very much a slice of life story but note that it’s no longer a space opera. We follow two timelines, one from Pepper when she was a little girl and one from Sidra as she tries to get used to her new body. Both take place in a planet so there are no fun spaceship stuff.
I think you’ll like this a lot if identity exploration and finding one’s purpose in life are elements that you enjoy. If you don’t care about those things then it’s not for you just like it wasn’t for me.
What I loved in the first book was the attention that was given to the friendships, the sense of belonging to a found family as well as getting to know all the different alien species that exist and hopping from planet to planet.
A Closed and Common Orbit is the exact opposite of that. The focus is on the individuals, their inner struggles and information about life outside the place they reside in is minimal.
On the other hand I know people who absolutely loved it and I think it’s because they could relate to the characters, so if you can do that then you’ll love this.
Personally I didn’t relate and I didn’t find them interesting enough to care about their journey. I will read the third book though....more
So, unlikeable and whiny MC? Check. Yes it's his past that made him that way blah (No spoilers) Dnf at 53%
YAWWWWWWWN. What a snore-fest. I'll be brief.
So, unlikeable and whiny MC? Check. Yes it's his past that made him that way blah blah but if there is one thing I hate more than the tortured bad boy is the angsty soft boy. His behavior was garbage. I'm surpirsed his own mother talks to him much less his friends.
The secondary characters were 1 dimensional in the sense that ALL of them behave and talk the same way. The talk in an over the top manner (if there are actual 28-year olds out there who talk like that...wow) and they are annoying even when they seem helpful. Honestly it felt like they all were teenagers. It was funny at moments but then repetition took the stage and even that became stale.
Lastly, the dialog. It was so much! The sheer amount of it...headache inducing.
The only thing I liked was the love interest Oliver. He was a decent fellow who stood by and supported his beliefs concerning work and food.
I refuse to accept that 2021 started like this again.

I won't give an official rating because it might be better later on but up to the 31% that I managed to reach it was a 1 star for me. I found the characters to be zero-dimensional, the way people talk is extremely annoying and the girl on girl hate/name calling is severe. Also according to another review here there is rape later on so trigger warning for that.

If it wasn't Agatha herself and it has been written now I would have given it 2/5.
This was my first time reading this author and I decided to start with the book that apparently everyone loves and agrees is one of the best. However the truth is that apart from the poem with the 10 soldiers that die and become less with each verse (which also shows how the charcters are going to die) there was nothing that kept my interest.
I found it to be extremely DRY in everything. The writing style especially was so unimpressive. I like it when books are written in a direct and not flowery manner, but this was direct to the point that there was no essence to it.
Also I didn't give a crap for any of the characters and no one was of any interest to me. Not their lives or backstories or whatever. I just wanted them all to die already.
I will read another book of hers, specifically one in which you follow the detective because I like discovering clues and seeing the suspects through the eyes of someone who doesn't have all the facts.
.If this was made into a movie though, I believe I would absolutely love it. I can literally imagine how awesome it would be on the cinema with actual actors. . Scratch that there is a tv how!...more

Sadly it isn't for me. I'm not going to rate it because I didn't read far enough but the story progressed very fast without having some fluidity between each event. Honestly it read like a Wattpad story which isn't bad but it isn't what I was expecting from a published book. Give it a try if it sounds interesting though. I'm not a big fan of short story collections to begin with so take that as a factor....more

Surprisingly I loved this one more than Warbreaker.
The magic system is SO interesting. Elantris and Elantrian magic in general was by far my favourite element of the story. I wish Sanderson had written the second book already so we can explore more the magic and see what kind of limitations it has.
I liked all three main characters. He did better work in Mistborn but for a debut novel the characterization was well-done. I liked the couple and the redemption arc was nice.
Also, court and religious politics? YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU. I was 100% there for the smart outmaneuvering. Compared to his other books this one doesn't have as much action but for me plenty of political intrigue was enough to satisfy me.
I did think however that the ending was kind of fast. I wanted it to be drawn out more. Also in one character's POV we got info-dumping for the world and sometimes it slowed the pace but other than that I had no problems.
I recommend it for Sanderson fans and people who really like politics. Please don't start with Sanderson here. Believe me Mistborn era 1 or Warbreaker are the best options for that.

...more
