I’m not the typical romance reader, but I have to say, some of the trademarks of the genre are present in this book in spades and made for the most rewarding reading experience.
Millie is a young professor at UC Santa Barbara, and her group of friends are all male professors. They have a wonderful social life together, but each is single and looking for a date to an upcoming event at the university, so they decide to try their hands at online dating. They create accounts with the same dating app and keep each other updated on their matches and the foibles of online dating.
Things are going as planned; however, Millie and Reid, one of the guy friends, spend the night together, and not only plan to keep it a secret from the rest of the group, they also promise to keep their friendship strictly platonic from then on.
There’s much more to the story, but just know Millie, under a pseudonym, and Reid end up matching on the app and practically fall for each other through their messages. Will the pair end up together, will they stay friends, or will their friendship fall apart?
Christina Lauren is a dynamic writing duo. They write silly banter amongst the friends that made me laugh and smile, and their characters are charmers. I loved each of them for different reasons, and as one of my good friends said, I’d love to see a follow-up for this friend group. There’s more story to tell here!
Millie is guarded, and it is understandable due to a tremendous loss in her life. Will she ever be able to let herself go and open up? Reid has a sensitive side that I found really alluring, and with that comes some hurt when he feels manipulated by the group. Will he be able to forgive? So many great dynamics, so much true friendship, so much love. If you are like me, and not the typical romance reader, don’t be thrown by the genre or the title. My Favorite Half-Night Stand is a stunning, witty story about friendship and letting yourself go to fall in love.

Lauren Clark wrote two novelsLaura McNeill/Lauren Clark is back with an exceptional new thriller! I read this with Berit and Mackenzie! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Lauren Clark wrote two novels, Center of Gravity and Sister Dear, published by Harper Collins under the name Laura McNeill. Both were two of the most tense, gripping domestic suspense books I’d read at the time, and since then, about two years, I’ve been eagerly awaiting a new book, and here it is!
Olivia is a teenager living in New Orleans with her single chef father, Theo, who is opening a new restaurant. Olivia unfortunately feels responsible for her mother’s death, and when her father is missing, and someone is in hot pursuit of her, she blames herself for that, too. Why is Olivia on the run? And who can be trusted?
The tension I felt once Olivia was running was palpable. I had the hardest time putting the book down, and that’s becoming unusual for me past a certain hour. 😂 Olivia was in danger, and I felt like I had to see her through it! But it kept going!
And then red herring after red herring was dangled. Who had come up with this scheme and why, and most importantly, where was Theo? Were Olivia’s wealthy grandparents responsible? Her politician uncle? Her dad’s rough, tough best friend? Her father’s new, secret girlfriend? I didn’t know which way was up, and the easy-flowing writing kept me flipping the pages quickly.
The World Breaks Everyone is another original and well-written thriller from Lauren Clark/Laura McNeill. The characters are well-developed, and I felt empathy towards the innocent ones, like Olivia, and anger and frustration towards some of the others for what transpired. If you love engaging domestic suspense, don’t miss out on Lauren’s books! I’m awaiting her next and am ecstatic to know she’s already at work!

Elizabeth Miles is a fascinating character, and she happens to be a con artist. Her only “friend” is Priscilla Knight, who has her own share of baggage.
On her second marriage, Priscilla’s husband has died in a suspicious accident. Truth be told, her first husband died in an “accident,” too.
Priscilla brought her own money into the second marriage thanks to the benefits from her first; however, all she owns is in jeopardy when a banker lets her know it’s been siphoned off. Priscilla turns to Elizabeth for help and in finding the truth.
Set in the 1920s, City of Secrets is the second installment in an engaging and well-written historical mystery series. I absolutely loved Elizabeth’s complex character. She is rough and unscrupulous, but she is warm and endearing at the same time. She is in a relationship with straight-laced Gideon, a lawyer who lives by the rules.
Every character is wonderful, the writing is smart, and I loved City of Secrets from start to finish. I’m reading book one now to get some backstory, and it’s only enriching the experience I had with book two. Well-done!

A wall is put in place to separate Soviet-occupied from unoccupied Berlin. After ten years, the CIA discovers the wall is being breached.
Here’s where the “fun” stuff enters…Karen is a magician with the American Office of Magical Research and Deployment (you mean we don’t have one of those already?! We should!), and she is sent to assess the breach and see if it can be fixed. What she discovers instead is much more than she planned for.
A dab of politics, a background of history, and an alternate world, make Breach an original stand-out read. Magic is the winner in this forum and discovering just how so is yet another mesmerizing facet of this book.
Quirky and complex characters abound, along with smooth writing, solid plotting, adding up to a total escape of a read!
Disclosure to my sci fi and fantasy friends: remember I’m not a regular in either of these genres, but as a newbie, I definitely found this quite enjoyable!

Nikole is dating an actor, and they are on a date like any other with his buddies tagging along, except this time they are a Dodgers game. In front of a stadium filled with cheering fans, he proposes after only five months together.
And Nikole wants and needs to say no. In front of everyone.
Thank goodness for Carlos Ibarra who whisks her away from the cameras and supports her when she takes a few hits on social media . Carlos becomes Nik’s “just for fun” rebound relationship, but will they ever become more?
The Proposal is not one of my typical reads, but I read it at just the right time. I needed a feel-good, engaging, fun read, and this was most definitely it. Jasmine Guillory has an easy writing style, and I enjoyed Nikole’s story. One of the best parts is the cast of characters are diverse. We need more diverse (in every sense!) reads! Now I need to read The Wedding Date to see where these characters make cameos!

If you are an animal lover, read this book. Especially if you are a cat lover, don’t miss it! If you enjoy a sentimental, loving, perfectly told story, I implore you to read The Travelling Cat Chronicles!
From the beginning, when I read Nana’s voice, I knew the author, Hiro Arikawa, has been loved by a cat. We’ve all read the story about “man’s best friend,” the dog, but what about the love of a cat?
Nana is a stray cat living in a parking garage who slowly becomes affiliated with the owner of a van he sleeps on. The owner, Satoru, begins feeding him, and when Nana is hit by a car, he needs help. Satoru rescues him, and Nana becomes his cat. They live together happily for several years.
Much later, Satoru takes Nana on a road trip to see several of his childhood friends, and all the while Nana is wondering what is happening because it appears Satoru is searching for a new home for him.
The Travelling Cat Chronicles is storytelling perfection. Curl up with this book, and I promise you, you will devour it in one afternoon. It is heartfelt, poignant, endearing, and everything you could want in a book.
On a personal note, Nana loves his Satoru the way I believe my cat loves me, and to feel that devotion through Nana’s voice is one of the most masterful things I’ve read in a work of fiction.

Solace Island represents me stretching my reading chops. I really mean S-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g. But before I get started, I’ll let you know I enjoyed it!
Billed as romantic suspense, Solace Island is heavy on the romance side for about the first half, and by romance, I mean the racy kind. This is steamy! About halfway through, the suspense hits, and it’s off to the races through the ending.
Maggie is dumped at the altar and to find peace, she heads to her sister Eve’s house on Solace Island in Washington state. The two decide to open up a bakery together. Eve tries to set Maggie up with their handsome neighbor, Luke, also a baker, but Maggie is not interested, at least at first.
When Maggie is almost run over by a car, and Luke then saves her life by pushing her out of the way, the suspense heat is on. Maggie has a feeling that Luke is not who he seems to be. Some unknown threat is looming and stalking Maggie.
From Luke’s perspective, he wants to help Maggie and Eve and moves them into his state-of-the-art, highly secure home; however, he has secrets of his own.
Solace Island is one part steamy romance, one part riveting suspense. The setting of Solace Island won me over instantly. I’ve spent some time on the islands around Washington state, and Meg Tilley easily captured the serenity and beauty (as she should, since she is fortunate to live there!). The writing is smooth and easy-to-read enabling me to finish this book quickly. The ending is original and surprising, and all in all, I enjoyed this exciting, haunting, thrilling book, and I cannot wait for Eve’s story in book 2!

Rosie and Laura are sisters andThe Night Before is one of most original thrillers I’ve read, bar none. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Full review for pub day today!
Rosie and Laura are sisters and total opposites in their personalities and ways of life. While Rosie has lived the expected life marrying her childhood sweetheart and having a child, Laura is single and has had a lifelong difficulty with anger. It was said as a child that she had fists for hands.
Laura experienced a trauma in her teen years that explains some of why her path has been a diversion from Rosie’s. But why does her life continue to tumble and fall apart every time she meets a new man?
Laura is staying with Rosie and her family when she goes on a blind date and does not return home. Rosie immediately starts looking for her, but knowing her sister’s past, she is desperate to find her. She questions whether her sister could have harmed the man she met on the date, or was Laura hurt this time. As the pieces of that puzzle are shown, it kept me guessing back and forth about Laura’s innocence or guilt.
Another original aspect of this story is the timelines. The story is told in the present day by Rosie as she searches for Laura, the night before (when Laura was on the date) by Laura herself, and in brief entries of conversations Laura had with her therapist in the past.
The Night Before had me riveted, glued to my book, confused by my own thoughts about Laura’s culpability (which I loved!), and questioning just how I felt about Laura and of what she is capable. I felt intense empathy for her knowing the trauma and life experiences she’s had.
Wendy Walker did an exceptional job conveying how two sisters growing up in the same household can have vastly different experiences shaping their entire lives. The Night Before receives my highest recommendation, and I predict it will be a top thriller for 2019!

What you absolutely need to know:
Clara is dating Luke, and he vanishes. Most everyone believes he has just walked out on her, but Clara thinks otherwise. The small clues he left behind point to a possible stalker.
Emma, Luke’s older sister, who also vanished, but twenty years earlier, is now present and attempting to help Clara find Luke. She won’t tell anyone where she’s been or even what happened.
Somehow Luke’s disappearance in the present, and Emma’s in the past, are connected. The convergence is masterful!
Camilla Way weaves a sticky spider web from the start. I was caught in the web, feeling its tension, due to the massively addictive plot line and exceptional pacing. I took a peek at Lies We Told much earlier than when I could actually read it, and I had the shakes putting it down. I needed to pick it back up and find out what happened. I don’t get the shakes often! 😂
Huge kudos to Way! I am on board for Watching Edie and any other book she writes!

A woman is accused of a murder she says she did not commit, while a journalist is grieving an enormous loss. These two join forces, but how and why?
If you are familiar with the Casey Anthony trial, this story will feel similar in some ways. That trial even plays a role in the book.
Mercer, the journalist, has lost her family in a tragic accident. She is having a very hard time (understandably so) when she is asked to write a book about the trial of Ashlyn Bryant, a hated woman, who may have murdered her own daughter, Tasha. Like most of America, Mercer finds Ashlyn despicable, and it’s easy to see why writing this novel would be hard for a grieving mother. Can Mercer write this book?
Ashlyn is one of those characters that makes your skin crawl at times. She is a compulsive liar and just thinking that she may be guilty makes it easy to judge her. It is uncanny how many lies she tells and how she begins to believe her own stories.
Trust Me had me doubting my feelings of Ashlyn’s guilt or innocence over and over again. In a book entitled “Trust Me,” just who can you trust?
The tension was paramount, the writing smooth…I loved to hate Ashlyn and felt compassion for Mercer’s character. Trust Me had me fully invested in demanding justice for Ashlyn’s daughter.

Joe happens upon his wife when she is supposed to be at work. He follows her into a hotel where he sees her in an argument with a friend of theirs, Ben.
That argument turns violent when Joe becomes involved, and Ben is knocked out cold. At the same time, Joe and Mel’s son, William, has an asthma attack and needs his father’s help.
Joe returns to the scene to check on Ben, but he has vanished. Who do you think will be blamed?
Joe is a character to love. He is a wonderful father and loving husband, and in a flash, his life falls apart when he is accused of wrongdoing. Lie after lie is batted around, and the author exposes the intrusive nature of technology these days and how the lack of privacy can tear lives apart.
I found Lies an entertaining, addictive, and fresh thriller. The ending was one I never saw coming, and the entire read kept me on the edge of my seat, especially with its current and relevant topics of hacking and overuse of social media. I wished I could read it all in one sitting, especially with the quick chapters and precise writing. Well-played, T.M. Logan! What’s next?

At its heart it is two things: a tribute to teachers and love for child.
Told in two storylines, past and present, the first takes place in Kiev in the 1980s around the time of the disaster at Chernobyl. Katya is a promising ballerina, and Sasha is a graduate student. The two are in love when tragedy strikes. They later have a child, Yuri, born with a health condition due to the after effects of the disaster.
The present storyline blends a dedicated, loving teacher, Maggie, into the present day with Katya, Sasha, and young Yuri. Requiring a teacher in the home due to his significant health needs, Yuri and Maggie take some time getting to know each other, but when they develop a bond, Maggie draws inspiration from Yuri’s wisdom and zest for life.
Easy-to-read, full of emotion, I was invested wholeheartedly in the characters of The Secret of Clouds. Maggie as a teacher epitomizes most of the teachers I know – selflessly giving their time and love to their students, advocating for their best interests.
You simply have to read the book to know where the title comes from, and the story behind the “Family Cloud.” The afterword is also not to be missed as Richman describes her inspiration for the book and her thankfulness for the teachers in her and her children’s lives. Overall, The Secret of Clouds was moving and insightful, and I’m grateful I read it.

I’m honored and humbled that Goodreads selected me to receive a book club kit and set of copies of One Day in December, graciously provided by the publisher, Broadway Books and Crown Publishing. I was fortunate to have local friends and online friends join me for this heartwarming read, the perfect story to enjoy this time of year, and quite uplifting in the end.
It’s close to the holidays, December 21 to be exact, when Laurie is bewildered and exhausted riding the bus home from work. She just so happens to make eye contact with a guy at the bus stop, and she has an instant connection, something she never believed in before. He tries to get on the bus, but it’s too late. The doors close, and off Laurie goes. She makes it her New Year’s Resolution to find the bus stop guy.
For a year, she searches for him at every bus stop and bar in London (amazing setting, by the way!). Never finding him, she attends a Christmas party where she is introduced to HIM as her best friend Sarah’s new boyfriend!
Ten years go by between these friends, and they experience their share of kindness, heartbreak, disconnects, and could there possibly be second chances?
I loved this story from start to finish. The formatting and timeline added interest and even more investment on my part. I found this a cozy, charming read, the characterization was warmhearted, and overall, it was a delicious escape, one where happiness is the ultimate goal. One Day in December is much more than the typical romance read, and that’s why it’s receiving universal love from readers across genres.
I hope I can speak for the group in saying that many found this book one of the their favorites of the year, if not their top favorite. We are all avid readers, so that’s saying something.
Thank you again to Broadway Books, Crown Publishing, and Goodreads for this special opportunity and for the free books. All opinions are my own.

Sarah is successful at work and with owning her business, but she has dark secrets of her own difficult upbringing. Shockingly, Sarah is a kidnapper.
When Sarah notices Emma in the airport, she finds it hard to look away. Amy is in rare form picking at Emma at every turn, overcorrecting her, and physically hurting her. Haven’t we all witnessed something like this at one time or another? What would do you do, if anything? Sarah does not take Emma at the airport, but she cannot get the child off her mind…and when a second opportunity presents itself, she takes Emma and runs.
The structure of the narrative is between past and present with the voices of Sarah, Amy, and later, Emma. Being privy to the thoughts from all narrators added to the empathy I felt for each character. There was not one right or wrong answer for me. There were shades of gray, and adults who grew up in challenging environments finding it hard to choose a different path in life. It is easy to judge Amy. All her faults are splattered all around her for the world to see, but when you look deeper into the narrative, she is a person out-of-control who cannot seem to stop the way her life is spinning. And while Sarah may look like the more caring type, she, too, has scars and is imperfect, and hello- she abducted a child!
I appreciated the discussion we had in our group because thoughts arose around the ethics of what happened. Who was right? Who was wrong? What is best for Emma, and who decides that? Not Her Daughter is definitely a book you will want to discuss. And beyond that, Frey writes with precise intention. The narrative flows with tension building, and the story could not have been more original. A mass of kidnapping stories are out there, but Not Her Daughter turns a new page.

I read The Night Olivia Fell with a group of5 “Trust Me, you absolutely cannot miss reading this book” stars to The Night Olivia Fell! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I read The Night Olivia Fell with a group of blogger friends, and we unanimously loved it! An emotional read perfect for groups, The Night Olivia Fell is definitely a book you will to discuss with friends!
My Thoughts:
The Night Olivia Fells opens with a scene of which no one wants to relate. Abi Knight receives a phone call that her teen daughter has been in a tragic accident and is in the hospital. Upon arriving, she learns that her daughter is not only brain dead, but also pregnant.
From there, the narrative shifts between Abi’s narrative, mostly in the present day with some flashbacks, and Olivia’s narrative in the months leading up to her fall, until the two narratives merge in a masterful way.
Abi believes from the start that Olivia’s fall is no accident. She sees bruises on her wrists, and she quickly learns no one is taking her seriously, including the police. Once the police finally do begin to investigate, the case never seems to be their priority, and Abi decides to take matters into her own hands.
What happened to Olivia that fateful night, and how will this tragic story end?
There are so many things I loved about The Night Olivia Fell, and the biggest is how grounded it is in reality with authentic emotions, relationship dynamics, and characters. And those characters…wow! Not one is simply good or bad; they are a nice mix of complexity that keeps you guessing, especially when it comes to pointing the finger at who might have harmed Olivia. The author kept a wide net cast when looking for the suspect. I would develop a theory, and then pan to the next potential perp as the story went along and red herrings were dangled.
The Night Olivia Fell is so much more than the typical suspense story. While it has all the paramount trademarks, including secrets, lies, and formidable tension, it is in a league of its own with its intensely relatable characterization and raw emotion. You will love Abi and Olivia, and you will most definitely want to wrap your arms around each of them together, as you read their story and accept their individual fates as mother and daughter.
I read this book as a group with Berit, Holly, Melisa, Mack, and Kendall, and this was the best kind of story to read together. We shared in the tension, the love for these characters, and the guessing game at just who was guilty at the center of it all.
Thank you to the author, Christina McDonald, for the complimentary physical copy. All opinions are my own.

Melody has a new cottage on Sunshine Beach in quaint, picturesque Sandcastle Bay. She lives close to her best friend, Tori, who was introduced during the first installment in the series. Melody’s life is pretty full and happy, but she finds herself missing having someone to share it with.
Enter Jamie. He and Melody work across the street from each other and are friends first, but their feelings begin to flourish. While it would not be fun to experience first-hand, the ongoing dating disasters of Melody and Jamie had me giggling at times. Through these trials, they have to decide if it’s worth it to be together, or should they remain friends.
The Cottage on Sunshine Beach is an uplifting, easy, funny, endearing, and warm-hearted read, just perfect for summer! What’s not to love? I am already excited to see who we meet in the next book! Highly recommended for rom com fans.

It is the 1800s in Boston, Massachusetts, some two hundred years after the Salem witch trials. One member of the Montrose family is a witch, but she has no knowledge of this.
There is a scandal that causes the Montrose family to flee from Boston to New Oldbury. Their new home is the gothic, eerie, but stately Willow Hall. It holds its own secrets within its walls. Will the Montroses be able to outrun their past, or is their family destined to be outcasts?
While there is a main character witch, The Witch of Willow Hall is not chock-filled with sorcery or witchcraft, so you should know that going in. What it is instead is an exceptionally atmospheric, well-told historical drama centered on family secrets, romance, betrayal, and tragedy.
I adored Lydia and found her story interesting and engaging. This is a slower-building story where not much happens until the end of the book, and that’s ok because the story is about the people, the Gothic feel of ominous foreboding, and the richly cinematic atmosphere.
Thank you to Harlequin for the physical copy. All opinions are my own. I was fortunate to read this atmospheric book with five beautiful friends. ♥️
