The story dipped for me in Iron Gold, I have to admit, but Dark Age was such a--to be broad--complete book. Complexity. Pierce has done his research ten times over. And the amount of action balanced by intrigue, duplicity, and heart, well... I was blown away. I could wax philosophical about it, but this is the kind of book that you do that over a glass of something strong with a friend. So I'll list a few things:
Redemption. Brave cowardice. Old friends. Joy of an enemy. Chosen family. Family. Sacrificial lions, there are no lambs anymore.
An absolutely great series. From a storytelling standpoint, you cannot make the goals and obstacles any more clear than Ed did throughout each book. AAn absolutely great series. I once heard (forgive me, I can't remember where or who) that every story has been told, it's a writer's job to tell it in a new way. I would say that is very appropriate for this book. Nona and her friends could be found at the same table as Frodo and the nine or Rand al'Thor and company.
A very good story exploring the subtleties of friendship, loyalty, courage, and love. Simple as that....more
