I listened to about 1/3 of the book and it had to be returned to the library - and I'm not interested in rechecking it out. I started reading this memoir ahead of an online bookclub author talk, but it’s just not for me. Who is this book for? Readers drawn to the 1960’s NYC art scene, especially poetry. I was somewhat interested in the author’s writing about her relationship with her parents - it’s a very GenX vibe and I like exploring generational themes. But I don’t enjoy poetry and don’t like New York-centric books, as in books that assume everyone thinks NYC is the center of the universe. Ugh.
DNFd at 25% and after scanning ahead. This dystopian novel was not for me. I love the genre, but I need it to be scientifically grounded. Land of MilkDNFd at 25% and after scanning ahead. This dystopian novel was not for me. I love the genre, but I need it to be scientifically grounded. Land of Milk and Honey skipped any science-based world building (the dystopia is created by a “smog” that came out of Iowa). The literary quality is high, but for dystopian fans that need more grounding in a scientific premise, that is not enough. I’m also not much of a foodie and that is a big focus of the book.
If you are a foodie and care more about the words and less about the scientific premise for your dystopian novels you will probably enjoy the book more than me - from looking through other reviews there seems to be a strong split opinion. WTF!? - I just felt tired thinking about slogging through a 20-hour audiobook.
I was excited at first because I’ve been to Natchez and love reading books set in locales I’ve traveled to. But this book didn’t age well. The amount of cringing I did in one hour? DNF....more

I was listening to the audio and it is one of the only times I have had to slow the speed down to understand what was being said. I started it over once because, after a few chapters, I couldn't figure out what the heck was happening. The voice was gruff NY for all character dialogue and everything in between. I could not keep listening...I just couldn't follow the story as there was all this unnecessary junk (I listen to almost 100 audiobooks a year and this is the first time I remember not being able to make sense of what I was listening to).
I don't rate books I DNF, but before I decided to bail on this one, I read through the 1-star reviews, and I agreed with them. Not for me....more
