This was not the story I had expected; it was so much more! It is the perfect example of an historical fiction. It would be easy to see Tolstoy. Chechov, and Dostoyevsky sitting around a table toasting this modern Russian story.with smiles of approval. Towles created a superbly entertaining main character in Count Rostov and surrounded him with an engaging cast of supporting characters: a poet, a cook, a waiter, a seamstress, an actress, two young girls, a musician, a Communist beurocrat, and the "bishop." I enjoyed the emphasis on how time is viewed and the references to the family's grandfather clock, the clock that sounds only twice a day, the theft of a wristwatch when exact time becomes essential. There's so much good to say about this book,and I appreciate my friend who recommended it to me. It's the perfect gift for achieving my goal of reading 200 books in 2021.
