Можна згадати про Волта, старшого брата Едвіна, який є наймогутнішим чарівником у їхній родині, це пихатий гівнюк, який ходить усюди з самовдоволеною либою так, ніби весь світ — його вотчина, і який цькував свого брата змалку, так шо, то ще питання, чи хист до магії то дар, чи покарання.
Та повернімося до Едвіна. Коли ми знайомимося з ним через Робіна, перше враження про нього буквально "безколірний", і вся ця книжка — це такий собі шлях від безколірного до, якщо хочете, a marvellous light. Зацькований братом й іншими хлопцями, Едвін звик закриватися від щонайменшого подразника. Раз за разом авторка порівнює його із порцеляновою статуеткою. Робін дуже повільно, делікатно і не без помилок допомагає Едвінові нарешті розкритися. Авторка так захоплюється цим процесом, що, здається, часом навіть забуває, що персонажі ще там і якийсь макґафін шукають.) Принаймні я точно призабула про це за всіма дивними витівками Едвінових родичів. А потім авторка ще й підкинула рояль в кущах. Нема мови, рояль красивий і кущі пишні, але що є то є.
Ага, хочу ще згадати, що світ роману, як, мабуть, і його реальний відповідник, дуже мізогіністичний: вважається, що жінки завжди мають скромні чарівницькі сили, які не вартують того, щоб їх розвивати. Паралельно з цим проходить лінія молодшої сестри Робіна Мод, яка хоче навчатися в університеті, але в реаліях її світу здобути вищу освіту вона може хіба завдяки приватним заняттям з викладачами, що потребує чималих коштів, і згоди батьків чи, як тут, брата-опікуна. Найрозумніші жінки наловчилися використовувати упередження чоловіків собі на користь, тут є чудова гумористична сценка за участю співробітниці Робіна міс Морріссі. Чесно кажучи, я сподівалася, що вона стане головною героїнею другої книжки серії, але бачу, що насправді це буде Мод. Хай там як, цікаво буде почитати більше про те, як жінки дають собі раду у такому досить ворожому до них світі.

Так от, почнімо з того, що це ніяка не Інід Блайтон, а який Бруно Вінсент, який, походу, написав цілу отаку серію, фантазуючи про те, якими стали в дорослому житті герої Блайтон. Лише погляньте на ці назви:

"Мигдалик" — це написана від першої особи історія нейровідмінної дитини. Якщо ви читали Дивний випадок із собакою вночі або Розумник, ця книжка має з ними чимало спільного.
Наш герой Юндже (перепрошую, якщо неправильно транслітерую: корейської, на жаль, не знаю) має недорозвинені мигдалини, тому він не відчуває емоцій. Цікаво, що першим тривожним дзвіночком для його мами стало те, що її маля ніколи не всміхалося. Трапляється кілька подій, після яких хлопчика діагнозують алекситимією — нездатністю ідентифікувати та виражати емоції. Окрім всього іншого це означає, що Юндже не відчуває страху, тож, переживаючи за його життя, мама починає залишати йому повсюди записочки на зразок "Коли машина під'їжджає занадто близько до тебе –> ухились або відбіжи". Виснажена доглядом за незвичайною дитиною, мама викликає харизматичну бабусю, і їхня маленька сім'я відкриває крамничку вживаних книжок і потроху досягає якого-не-якого щастя і спокою. На жаль, коли Юндже стає підлітком, його мама і бабуся стають жертвами божевільного з ножем, і тут наша історія по-справжньому починається, бо Юндже опиняється сам-на-сам з ворожим світом. Ясен пень, він отримує лейбл "робота" в своїй школі і мимоволі провокує на свою голову різні неприємності. Разом з тим минає не так багато часу, як Юндже знаходить друзів — спершу хулігана Ґона з його гаслом "Якщо я не можу захистити себе від кривди, то сам стану кривдником.", його історія не менш незвичайна і трагічна, ніж у нашого головного героя, та сонячну Дору, яка може обігнати навіть вітер. Ага, я ще забула згадати про опікуна Юндже доктора Шіма, лікаря, який свічнувся в пекаря, переосмисливши свої життєві пріоритети. Насправді події в цій книжці такі ж нетипові, як і наш головний герой, але дивним чином це працює і я не відчула фальші. Ну, я не відчула б фальші, якби не дурнуватий 75 розділ, якби його не було, я б вліпила книжці 5 зірочок.

Авторка описує нам утопічне місто Омелас, де всі завжди такі красиві, радісні і усміхнені, як в якійсь туристичній рекламці. Живуть і в ніс не дують. Але є одне але. В підвалі одного з будинків, в тісній маленькій комірчині без вікон тримають дитя. Дитяті дають їжі і води достатньо, щоб воно не вмерло, але на тому й усе. Вона голе, воно ходить під себе, воно божевільне від таких нелюдських умов існування. Всі мешканці Омелас знають, що дитя там і в яких умовах. Багато-хто з них раз чи двічі за життя приходять подивитися на нього, всі вони шоковані, обурені, засмучені, — але всі вони залишають дитя там, де воно є, бо серед мешканців міста чомусь панує глибоке переконання, що утопічне життя в Омелас цілковито залежить від жалюгідного існування дитяти. Проте іноді якийсь омелянин не повертається додому, побачивши дитя. Ця людина назавжди йде з міста кудись у невідоме. Ці люди і є ті, хто пішов з Омелас.
