The language is very rich, and yes sometimes a tad difficult to follow, but I still enjoyed reading it. As for the story itself, I found it complex and completely enthralling. If I were really being picky, I might give this 4.5 stars, but I this is one instance I don't mind GR forcing me to round up....more

The first third of the book can be summarized by a lot of hand wringing and "I know something is wrong, I can just feel it" type conversations. On a whole, I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if only it were shorter. I really did not need to know of every failed telephone call or every time the cow approached someone (and no, I am not being facetious with the latter example). There were lots of useless conversations that did not advance the story or reveal anything about the characters.
Nevertheless, the brutal reality of medieval life was interesting as well the differences in how disease was dealt with at different points in time. ...more
