Really fun sequel in the series, although it definitely has that "second part of a trilogy" feel where it doesn't stand on its own at either the beginning or the end. Continuity is IMMEDIATE, so it's worth it to make the effort to read these in a quick marathon; despite the bits of exposition, it took me a moment to remember who was who and what was going on. Fortunately, the change of location meant there were new people and places as well.
I really enjoy the tone of this series -- it's a really interesting combination of modern-day language with a medieval-ish sword-&-sorcery setting, and of elves-goblins-etc. with urban fantasy. Plus, I think Wheaton's writing skills have improved since then. Interestingly, the life he was trying to build at the time has kind come to fruition. In that way, it's filled with dramatic irony and kind of inspiring, and more so than a cheesy "here's how I turned my life around and was a great success, you can too!" book might have been; instead, you're reading about his real frustrations and fears, and the writer doesn't have the perspective of knowing he did make a comeback eventually. That's kind of great. ...more
