This is a short story between the first and the second book of the Lockwood & Co. series and while it’s after the events of the first book, I think that if somebody isn’t sure to engage into reading the series, they can try this short story since it’s a typical case and everything you need to understand what’s happening there, it’s explained well enough.
Also, there is a glossary of ghost clasifications and even a sneak preview of the first chapter of the second book.
This tale isn’t covered in the Netflix first season adaptation, it still to be seen if they’d show it in a following season.
In the same way than the first book (and I guess it will be the format of the whole series), the narrative is told from the point of view of Lucy Carlyle.
Anthony Lockwood, Lucy and George are hired to deal with some ghost in a private school that even on the day (that that it’s really rare) there are paranormal incidents like appearing flying daggers (hence the story’s title).
I won’t spoil the case, but as I told you, it’s a typical (but quite entertained) case in the universe of Lockwood & Co. that if you are already fan, you’ll enjoy it quite a lot, and as I told already too, if you don’t know anything about the series, it’s a cool option to read something short and decide if you want to engage into the whole series.

...one, I classified this poem as a "short story" since I haven't read so much poetry as to justify a tag for that in my personal list to describe books...
...two, I rated 4 stars, since kinda the same reason, due I haven't developed a knack for poetry, but since I was curious about this poem by Edgar Allan Poe, still I read it, and certainly I liked it quite a bit, but it's some hard to enjoy for me poetry. Nobody's fault.
This is easily one of the most famous poems of all time and one of the masterpieces in the middle of Poe's works.
And this edition has the plus of having the gorgeous illustrations by Gustave Doré (that I already knew about him thanks to "Pawn Stars" where another book illustrated by him was taken there).
Funny thing is that most people think that a talking raven is a paranormal element, in an episode of "Doctor Who" (Capaldi's era) was shown ravens talking too as something unusual, but I watched a TV show in "Nat Geo Wild" where they informed that ravens indeed learn to "talk", much like parrots, repeating words that they heard. Ravens even do a "funeral" ceremony for those dead ravens that they find, reuniting for a moment around the fallen comrade. Amazing animals, the ravens are.
In this captivating poem, a male character is mourning the loss of his lover, Lenore, and in the middle of his sorrow, a raven gets into the room, and while the bird only says "Nevermore", the male character manages to think that this raven is answering all his questions, not matter how diverse are.
This is yet other tale part of the Cthulhu Mythos.

135 Benefit Street. Providence, Rhode Island. It’s a real house that you can find even nowdays (2017) at the said address, and it’s the scenario of this really spooky tale, that H.P. Lovecraft knew well since his aunt lived there for a while.
However, while he chose this real house for the scenario, it was another real house at Elizabeth, New Jersey, the inspiration for the narrative.
A man and his uncle, are doing a paranormal research of a house with a very long history of unexplained deaths and illness for the unlucky inhabitants of that house.
The “shunned house” presents weird weeds in the yard, yellow vapors in the basement, phosphorescent fungi in the cellar and a foul smell around everywhere in the property.
After doing all the paperwork about the incidents,...

It's a fair premise, but I felt that narrative development was too slow and sparse to my taste, especially taking in account that instead of a short story, it's a novella, therefore, longer to read it.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.
Easily the most known story by H.P. Lovecraft and the text which gives a formal “birth” to the Cthulhu Mythos, along with the mention of the “fake” book of Necronomicon, inspiring dozens of other writers to contribute with their own pieces to enlarge the horror franchise.
Through a series of “found documents” during three sections in the narrative, it’s slowy revealed how a secret cult, so ancient along with the dawn of men, it was founded to keep memories of some kind of species from the stars who walk the Earth before humankind, and that they retired themselves to the depths of the sea and the core of the planet, but...

Herbert West believes that human body is not other than an “organic machine” and therefore, there has to be a way of “re-starting” it when it passed away. Since he was a medical student at Miskatonic University, he allied with the story’s narrator, another fellow medical student, to make secret experiments to make possible the reanimation of a dead person, and those experiments continued once both get their medical degrees and began their private medical practice, and even during their military medical service on World War I. During all those years, having different morbid results on their sinister experiments.
It’s curious to know that H.P. Lovecraft only accepted to write this story for the money and he disliked to be forced to make “cliffhangers” at the end of each chapter, when it was originally published in a magazine, and moreover to be considered by many Lovecraft’s scholars as his weakest work.
I say that it’s curious since I truly loved the story!
Easily my second favorite H.P. Lovecraft’s story, right after The Dunwich Horror.
I think that it was productive taking Lovecraft out of his “comfort zone” having him to write cliffhangers, and plotting more action scenes than in the rest of his usual work. Even he introduced the iconic Miskatonic University in this very tale. I believe that it allows him (not matter if he wanted or not) to greatly plot a very dark, way grim and quite morbid tale, easy to understand, easy to follow, easy to enjoy, without any metaphysical ambiguous elements.
Simple. To the point. Truly scary.
And without having the reader needing to look for any “secret clue” to link with the Cthulhu Mythos.
Yes, Cthulhu is cool but, here, Lovecraft proved that he could developed a totally human villain, with totally human wickedness, that he was evil of his own without having being contaminated by some paranormal and/or alien external source. Good ol’ evil human nature.
And still, the story presents clear Lovecraftian elements such as the preference of employing drugs in the plot instead of other means like electricity (as used on Frankenstein) to reanimate corpses, that certainly has to be one of the earliest prose stories (besides Frankenstein) in the exploit of the Zombies literary genre, so popular nowadays in the new millenium.
Also, since the character of “Herbert West” is part of the story’s title, I think that he can be easily one of the most known characters of Lovecraft’s work, just behind of the character of “Cthulhu”, that it’s helped too due the loosely based film franchise of Re-Animator....more

Ivan Turgenev was the first Russian writer to become popular and successful in Europe, even way way WAY before of Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy,, thanks to that Turgenev left Russia and he was living several years in different countries of Europe, but still, it’s undeniable that due the impact of his novels and short stories, that European and American readers became interested to read other authors from Russia, getting better the chances to Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and others.
First Love is one of his most known and popular works, along with one of the most autobigraphicals about Turgenev…

I guess that due the title of the story and the basic premise, I was expecting a little cute love story between two young persons in the Russia of the 19th Century, but while in the basic thought, that was it…
…also it wasn’t that…
…at all…
A 16-years-old boy falls in love with a 21-years-old girl, in the Russia of the 19th Century. The boy is from a family with a lot of money, and while the girl is from a family with royalty background, it doesn’t have money. He’s quite infatuated by her, however while she got aware since the very first moment that he was in love of her, she keeps teasing him, sometimes even cruel.
However, this isn’t a regular love story, even I questioned myself if it is a love story at all, at least between the two main characters.
There are developments, unexpected twists in this tale that I just couldn't cope about it, they're not just right, in the first twist, and when you think that the worse is over, you meet with yet another twist that it's just too sad.
I can’t detailed more, because I fear to spoil the key angles of the story, that I found awful but still if someone else want to try the book (it’s quite quick to read), well, I won’t be the one to spoil the relevant moments of this hard to digest tale, but I can't deny that it's a bold tale, well written.
No wonder this was the last tale by Dr. Seuss while he was alive (there are two more books, published posthumously)…
…and I am sure that he is now visting great places!
This is a charming tale about the journey of each of us in our lives, BUT...
...what I really liked was that Dr. Seuss don’t lie to us.
He exposes during the rhythmic narrative, that not everything will be peaches-and-ice-cream in life, that we’ll have enjoyable moments in life, BUT...
...also testing times, we’ll have happy events, but also sad crisis, along the journey, not matter if good or bad, if we keep walking forward, we always will be meeting new places, new people, new moments…
