If you love character driven sci fi, this one may appeal to you. I wasn't personally very attached to the characters which likely held me back from loving this one.

I don't think this is NK Jemisin's strongest series but I still felt it was worth a read as an author I really enjoy. Her books aren't the easiest reads, but that effort always comes with rewards. ...more

I enjoyed book one but I struggled with book two. Thankfully this finale entry returned back to the elements that I loved at the beginning of the series.
This is another feminist character driven entry with strong interpersonal moments. Like the previous entries, this one continues to be slow paced. This kind of story is very dependent on the complexity of the characters. I felt these characters were interesting, but could have been stronger.
This book would have a higher rating if I loved mythological retellings more. I suspect other readers who can’t get enough of this fantasy subgenre will love this trilogy even more than I did. I liked it, but I felt it played it a bit safe and I would have loved a more creative approach to the source material.

This is the finale to this epic fantasy trilogy. I was a huge fan of the first book that captured my attention with a strong emotional start. The book introduced likable characters with a compelling emotional hook. It worked. I was in for the full ride.
Moving onto book two, and now book three, I have now experienced the full scope of the story. I will admit I am a touch underwhelmed. These later installments were objectively fine, but failed to elicit the emotional response.
Don't get me wrong this was a solidly good fantasy trilogy. I'm only so hard on it because I thought it was something more fresh than it ended up being in the end.
Anyone interested in this trilogy should start back at the beginning with The Bladed Faith.

This was a solid conclusion to this epic trilogy. I have some quibbles about the specific narrative structure of the ending but overall I enjoyed it. The Dark Forest continues to be my personal favourite but I still really enjoyed this one....more
I loved this military science fiction novel. It's not always a genre that works well for me, but this story immediately pulled me in.
When I initially requested this one, I wasn't entirely sure how it connected to the authors’ previous work. It turns out this is more of a chronological series than a companion one.
Despite jumping into this one blind, I found myself absolutely engrossed. There was a horror element to this story that surprised and deleted me. The military elements were also incredibly interesting. After finishing this one, I wanted to go back to the beginning and experience the full story.
I would definitely recommend this science fiction story to those that love high stakes and gripping narratives.

This is another enjoyable novella involving the grumpy but loveable Murderbot. I really enjoy the narrative voice of this artificial construct. They strive for the experience of personhood despite not always loving people. These novellas are especially episodic so the stakes never feel as high but I find this series quite comforting....more

This might be one of those cases where a trilogy just gets better with each entry. I absolutely loved the start of Nophek Gloss but I felt that the second half leaned into safe space opera tropes. From there, I was pleased to find book two, Azura Ghost, return to the darker elements and left me waiting for these final books.
Ethera Grave was a solid finale bringing a maturity to the finale act. Caiden has really grown into a well rounded complex protagonist. My favourite aspect of this series has become the worldbuilding. The technology and those that live within this world are weird and otherly. It's such a treat to find worldbuilding that excites me this way.
I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for a gripping, complex space opera. However you will want to start back at the beginning with Nophek Gloss.

While I struggled a bit with the second book, I was interested to see how this came together. However, getting into this book, I found myself disappointingly disengaged. The writing and story remain consistent with the first two books but I have read so many similar fantasy stories. This story does not have any specific faults but it also didn't do anything new. It did what it was doing well, but I still didn't find it as interesting as I wished.
This is very much the case of a series not being entirety for me. I understand why this will appeal to other fantasy readers who cannot get enough of the genre and don't mind a very traditional narrative.

I appreciate how far this series has grown. The plot became more complex and the characters matured and developed along the way.

This was a solid conclusion to an enjoyable fantasy series. I enjoyed the previous books and probably found this one to be the best of the quartet.
The story has good characters and plot, but perhaps is not a memorable or unique fantasy series. I enjoyed my time reading each entry but don't necessarily have strong emotional attachment to the characters or their subsequent fates.
I would primarily recommend this one to avid fantasy readers looking for a newer, lesser hyped series.

As a Canadian, I enjoyed the references in this books, but some of the details started to be excessive. I liked this one, but I'm not entirely sure if all the elements came together in the end. Some of the pieces of this story just felt a bit disjointed. Well this series wasn't perfect, I had a good time with this series and would recommend it to young and newer sci fi readers looking to get into the genre.
