I was not previously familiar with the authors’ podcast but I intend to check it out now. However this book completely stands on its own and does not require previous knowledge.
This book is separated in sections for different areas of the United States, from California to New York. I really appreciated the variety of locations and would love to actually use this guide for a future trip to America.
Each section includes a hidden gem, famous crime, spooky movies, things to do, where to stay, things to eat and travel tips.
The book hit the right balance between being fun and informative. I enjoyed reading as a whole, and not simply as a reference piece.
Most of all, I appreciated that the details felt well researched and prepared. So many books like this can be so superficial and oversimplified but that was not the case here.
I would recommend this one to any horror buff, especially if they are planning an American road trip.

The audiobook narration fit the story perfectly and really brought these women to life. I would highly recommend this classic to readers looking for a fantastic feminist horror story.

I likesld a lot of elements of this one but would have liked to see more depth from the characters and worldbuilding. The story felt a bit shallow which held me back from truly loving it. I am still interested to read more in this series to see where the author goes from here

However I quickly learned that this one has a different tone and style so fans of one series won't necessarily love the other.
For me, the strength of the Drowning Empire series was the characters and unfortunately I found these characters to be flater in comparison. This story is vast and ambitious and certainly has potential to turn into a compelling series. Yet judging this book alone, this one was not as compelling or memorable as I wanted it to be. I am still interested in this series but this wasn't the home run I expect from this author.

So much of this story discussed who would be seen as valuable (and who would not).
The story eventually moved into more of a fast paced action story. Personally I didn't need those aspects and would have been happy to just explore the complexities of these characters and their futures.
Overall I enjoyed this one, but felt the narrative could have been better focused to make the story more impactful. I would recommend this to readers looking for a new science fiction novel....more
