This was a grim but important read, written in 1946. The saddest thing is that so many people still live at this level of poverty, never having a chance to get ahead or get out of the vicious cycle of minimum wages (not that even that existed at the time), long hours, no care for the children, deprivation. And our MC, Lutie Johnson tried so hard to improve herself and get ahead for her and her son....more

I found II couldn’t settle to reading any of the other books I have on the go once I started this and suspect a book hangover is eminent. My first Octavia Butler. This was such a great story and film! Rollo Martins gets a shock on discovering his childhood friend was more than he seemed and finally sees him for what he is. Vienna is full of rackets and people on the make. It is still divided into four zones, everyone is trying to survive. I believe this story was written for film and I definitely saw every frame of the movie in my mind’s eye while reading....more
