it was amazing
bookshelves: sci-fi

This is a very odd George RR Martin book that I picked up randomly. It's almost serialized into 5 parts, but holds together nicely as a book. It's about a very odd trader who basically gets possession of the most powerful ship in the galaxy, and how he uses it to help people. Or...hinder them. And underneath the stories there are VERY powerful environmental and animal rights messages, it's kind of amazing and dark and has an amazing sense of humor. Definitely a really fun ride, I have to check if he wrote any more with the character, because I can see a ton more happening when you're in charge of basically a God-Vessel!

Paul Morrison This is one of my favourite books of all time. I borrowed it from my local library and read it over and over as a child, along with The Coming Of The Quantum Cats by Frederik Pohl (also highly recommended) :)

seak Great review. There's one more story in Dreamsongs, his collection of short fiction.

Also, from the same anthologies (Dreamsongs is I and II), I highly recommend Sandkings if you haven't read it.

Sorry to be that guy that just comments about recommendations. I recommend you read whatever you freaking want.

Bree Cool. I wasn't aware of this book.

Wampuscat Glad you found this one. It was the second sci-fi novel I ever read...waaaay before GOT happened. It is still my favorite.

Steve Garriott In the olden days, George wrote some ripping science fiction (yes, I know he still does). Haviland Tuf is a great character! Kind of a Nero Wolfe of the space-ways. If you haven't already, also try Windhaven, a book he wrote with Lisa Tuttle. A wonderful, melancholic story.

William I saw George doing a Q&A last month and someone asked him if he'd ever write another Haviland Tuf story. If I remember correctly he said he would like to write something else with the character someday, but he's obviously got to finish his current unfinished series and there's a long list of things he might want to potentially write after that.

Charlie Close Haviland Tuf is one of my favorite science fiction characters. I've liked these stories since the first ones were published in Analog Science Fiction back in the day.

Melanie Jablonski I read this book years ago and loved it! It's so good to hear of others discovering and enjoying it, as well as Wyndhaven. they're both little known but great books & sent me searching for everything I could find by George R.R. Martin at the time.

Aislin I just finished a short story he wrote called Guardians in the anthology Tails of Wonder and Imagination. That was my first introduction to Tuf Haviland and I’m so excited to see there’s another whole book about him!

Josef Lugh Asher I have almost finished this story with a few more pages to go and your summery is excellent could not agree more. Fantastic book

Jake Tuf Voyaging is a collection of short-stories. That's why it feels so episodic. It was published as short stories starting in 1976 on through Manna From Heaven, written and published December 1985.
