It is nice to read a new standalone translation by a Syrian-French woman of this early 18th century French fairy tale that may or may not have been taken/inspired by a visiting Syrian. The story, along with Ali Baba, was added by him to the Arabian Nights and passed off as part of the original. It is nowhere nearly as good as the multilayered stories within stories within stories of the Arabian Nights and not nearly as stranger or wonderful. But is still an enjoyable read. And, it goes without saying, better than the Disney version. But much better to read The Arabian Nights: Alf Laylah Wa-Laylah in the Husain Haddawy translation.
