Fall; or, Dodge in Hell

The book meandered and was headed to a place I wasn't really interested in going (namely--a virtual reality "Medieval World"). There were some interesting side trips--including to "Ameristan"--but once we started looking into Dodge's brain, with him trying to recreate a VR environment, I was immediately reminded of some really crappy fiction I had written in Junior High school, trying to look at situations as if from the mind of an autistic person (it was an assignment).
And after having read a number of reviews both here and out in the wild, I realized that I was not alone in my disinterest.
The problem (as I see it) with characters who exist only in virtual reality is: what are the stakes?
