Toni Morrison's novel is very lyrical and brilliant. The writing is sensational and she conveys mood, texture, and feeling in a lovely manner. This book deals with some very heavy topics, but there is still lots of love and hope in it. The characters are very memorable. Sethe stands at the center of this book and some of her actions to protect her family and defend her quality of life are unforgettable.
This book was easy to want to continue to read as it is very compelling. You do have to pay attention because Morrison has a lot of depth in her writing. The characterization was excellent, and the emotional payoff in the writing is worth it. This book is highly acclaimed and I certainly agree that it is a very valuable addition to the canon of American literature. There are some explicit scenes and language used throughout, so be ready for that if you choose to read. The effect on the reader is long lasting. A powerful book.
