Listened to book three of the trilogy (I'm not counting "Extras" which doesn't seem to be part of the same story) with my children, they loved it, I'm less sure. In some ways I liked Specials more than its two predecessors because it had greater complexity, a less predicable plot and characters whose ideas (sort of) evolved as they learned and grew. On the other hand, the novelty of the world building wore off somewhat. On balance, I wouldn't discourage you from reading the trilogy--but I would not encourage it either.
