It was clear upon starting this book that it was based on the life of Ana Mendieta, and I was not aware that it was against the wishes of her family.
And Ana’s full name is never mentioned in the book, even in the pages of acknowledgments, although the book is dedicated to “Ana” with no last name. I found that offensive, considering that much of the story is about women being forgotten, and that it’s necessary for us to speak their names and keep their work visible so that they will not be erased.
It’s well written and mostly compelling as a novel, although the supernatural element never really worked for me. But I can’t get past using Ana’s life and death without giving any acknowledgment.
