You are playing the role of Wade Duffy, a 46-year-old computer repairman called to solve a fault at Macmillan drive 2120. However, as soon as he sets foot in the building, the door closes hermetically, locking in the poor Wade. Thus begins his quest inside the building, which is increasingly disturbing. This is not a linear story, but you will jump from one pint to the other depending on the choices you will do, winking at point and click videogame of the 1990's. In my opinion, 2120 is closer to an horror graphic novel rather than to a book game. You will die a lot of times, and at the end you will perceive not to have read but to have participated in a very immersive story, experience strengthened by the multiple paths taken.

I never used the Goodreads spoiler tags because I just never felt the need to spoiler something. But in this case I will make my first exception, since maybe some of you might have read this book and comments something interesting. SPOILER:(view spoiler)[ The choice of the book game or the branching-path novel is extremely functional to the final revelation. We're dealing with machine learning, the building is none other than a learning algorithm, set up to generate new artificial intelligence.And Wade, the protagonist, is one of these AIs. Or better: it's the last developed version. Trained by the countless burrows, doors, keys, codes. Trying and trying again. This is genius. (hide spoiler)]

I am a bioinformatics technician, but I was completely unaware of this cyber element. Consequently, the final discovery left me ecstatic. And I have not ruled out reading again this book to complete some paths and secondary puzzles that I haven't solved for the moment.

State impersonando Wade Duffy, un riparatore di computer di 46 anni chiamato per risolvere un guasto al 2120 di Macmillan drive. Tuttavia, appena mette piede nell’edificio, la porta di ingresso si chiude ermeticamente, lasciando bloccato all’interno il povero Wade. Comincia così il suo viaggio all’interno dell’edificio, che si rivela sempre più inquietante. Non si tratta di un libro lineare, ma si salterà da un punto all’altro del volume in funzione delle scelte che si faranno, strizzando l’occhio ai videogame punta e clicca degli anni novanta. Per me rimane più vicina ad una graphic novel dell’orrore piuttosto che ad un libro game. Morirete molte volte, ed alla fine si percepisce chiaramente non di aver letto ma di aver partecipato ad una storia molto immersiva, esperienza “potenziata” dalle molteplici vie che sono state prese.

Non ho mai utilizzato la funzione di Goodreads per celare gli spoiler, perché non ho mai sentito il bisogno di farli. Ma in questo caso farò la mia prima eccezione, perché potrebbe essere che qualcuno di voi abbia letto questo gioiello e possa arrivare qualche commento interessante. SPOILER:(view spoiler)[ La scelta del libro-game o del percorso a bivi, è estremamente funzionale alla rivelazione finale. Si tratta di machine learning, l’edificio è nientepopodimeno che un algoritmo di apprendimento, messo in piedi per generare intelligenze artificiali. E Wade, il protagonista, è una di queste. O meglio: è l’ultima versione che si sta tentando di sviluppare. Che fa training attraverso gli innumerevoli cunicoli, porte, chiavi, codici. Tentando e ritentando. Questa cosa è geniale. Faccio il bioinformatico per mestiere, ma ero completamente all’oscuro del risvolto informatico di questa “graphic novel a bivi”. Di conseguenza, la scoperta finale mi ha lasciato estasiato. E non escludo di rileggerlo per completare alcune vie e risolvere quesiti secondari che per il momento ho lasciato irrisolti.
