We have a winner for our Mock Newbery. I am hoping, someday, to figure out a way to use the point system they use for the real Newbery awards. Until Goodreads has the capability to do that we will have to go with a more flawed system. In the meantime Wonder by R.J. Palacio has been chosen as our mock Newbery winner.

Based on our poll, which two would you choose as our honors?

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Lair & Spy by Rebecca Stead
Splendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz
Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin

Write your choices in the comments below.

Brandy | 4 comments Splendors and Glooms for sure! I haven't read Bomb yet but I am going to pick it because of how much buzz it is getting.

Benji Martin | 54 comments Splendors and Glooms and Ivan!

I liked the other two as well, but I'll be heartbroken if Ivan doesn't walk away with something this year.

message 4: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessmonster) | 80 comments Liar & Spy and Splendors & Glooms. I don't see why we couldn't have 4, but I'm not a fan of Ivan and I haven't had a chance to read Bomb yet.

Kristine (kristine_a) | 71 comments I am still missing notifications that a poll has been posted. I never know they have happened until after you post results. I'll double check my settings.

Marcie (marcieloveskidslit) | 78 comments Yalsa allows for as many honors as the committee wants. and I think all 4 are on my tops list. Things the committee could not look at are previous wins, but I can. So give the honors to Bomb and Ivan. Thanks for monitoring this group. It's been fun.

Holly The One and Only Ivan

Amanda | 11 comments I've got to read a few more of these. This group has definitely helped me find some great books though. It'll be interesting to see how this compares to the official results.

message 10: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments I read Child of the Mountains in two days. It my favorite so far. I liked how the author described the mountain dialect as lyrical. I don't think it will be a Newbery though. It doesn't seem the type of book the committee typically chooses. Getting ready to start See You at Harry's.

message 11: by Becky (new)

Becky (harperreads) The One and Only Ivan and Bomb are my two picks. I haven't made it all the way through Splendors and Glooms. I liked Liar & Spy, but I loved the other two. I'm with Jess, though. There have been so many great books this year, why can't we have four honors?

message 12: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments I didn't realize there was a limit to how many honor books.

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 52 comments I just read Twelve Kinds of Ice - which didn't make our list but is getting a lot of positive "last minute" buzz. A very special and unique little story!

I haven't read bomb yet. I'll have to squeeze this in before the vote!

message 16: by Bev (new)

Bev (grammag) | 15 comments One and Only Ivan and Bomb would be my picks for honors. I would like to see the number of honor books expanded though!

message 17: by Becky (new)

Becky Ownby | 3 comments One and Only Ivan and Bomb for Honors! Wonder was my Medal pick from the moment I read it--but I think my two honor picks are Medal worthy, as well! Great year for books!!!

message 18: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (kathyhartzler) | 17 comments Splendors and Glooms, and The One and Only Ivan.

Lisa Nagel | 91 comments Splendor and Gloom and the One and Only Ivan.

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison | 11 comments Twelve Kinds of Ice was spectacular in every way. I would love it to win!

Becky- I have to agree with you. Some years the selections are kind of ho- hum, but I felt like this year was a wonderful year for children's lit. So many imaginative options in a wide range of reading levels. A real treat to go through these great books.

message 22: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighb) Bomb and The One and Only Ivan. Both are brilliant.

message 23: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments I just read May B. by Caroline Starr Rose. I think it is a Newbery worthy. Out of the Dust won and it was also written in prose.

message 24: by Marcie (new)

Marcie (marcieloveskidslit) | 78 comments Finished May B. and I agree, but also think it will appeal to teachers and librarians even if not Newbery bound.

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison | 11 comments I had high hopes for May B. It is exactly the type of book I love to read. But I found it to be pretty lackluster overall. Liar and Spy was terrific. And ofcourse Wonder. It will be interesting to see if it will merit the Newbery or if it will get the medal for children with disabilites.

message 26: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Sapp | 76 comments I would be very upset if Ivan doesn't win something.

message 27: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bibliobecky) | 3 comments So sad that Wonder got nothing, that just seems so wrong.

message 28: by Becky (new)

Becky Ownby | 3 comments I literally felt like a knife was going through my stomach when I realized Wonder was not going to win anything. As soon as they got through the honor list and neither Ivan nor Wonder nor Starry River were on it, I knew my Wonder was in trouble.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison | 11 comments I was thrilled with today's selections. I am a bit surprised that Wonder did not win anything. It is currently the most popular children's intermediate title in Westchester Cty, NY. The kids discovered it on their own. Word of mouth spread quickly among them making it a favorite.

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky Ownby | 3 comments Yes-good selections today, for sure. Just a few of my favorites left out is all!!! But there were lots of good books to choose from in 2012. And that makes me happy.

The results of our Mock Newbery have The One and Only Ivan receiving an honor along with Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon and Splendors and Glooms tying for honors. So lets have three this year for our honors.

The One and Only Ivan
Splendors and Glooms
Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon

What a great year for children's literature.
