Thoughts?

My son and I read this a few years ago. He was 11 or 12 at the time. We both enjoyed it quite a bit; I think it has a lot of cross-generational appeal.

This book was amazing. I love how it was narrated from Deaths' POV, brilliant idea! Usually I don't cry over books, but i was bawling at the end of this one.

This book is so bloody amazing! I've never read anything like it! The idea is SO. BLOODY. BRILLIANT! Never stop writing, Zusak!

I was at the library today and I was about to get it but decided against it, as I had a pile of about 10 in my arms... Is it worth reading? Do you think I should get it? What kind of books resemble it/if I liked what book, you think I would like the Book Thief?

Yes read it! It is a life changing novel in my opinion. Hmmm, off the top of my head can't think of any similar reads because the ideas so different and not your average YA book.

This book was definitely a tearjerker at times, but had an amazingly weaved story.

I read this book a few years back and loved it. I'm so glad it's becoming more popular now. A great read!

Did any of you have any trouble with this book in the beginning? I've had this book on my shelve quite a while and I started reading it a few months ago, but I put it down because I couldn't really get in to the story at the start. Does is get better after say 20 pages?

Yes, I struggled for the first 50 or so pages and nearly dropped it, but once Max comes in the plot gets really juicy and intense. Keep on reading it! It's definitely worth it!

I just read this a few weeks ago. Loved it! I like how Death had a sense of humor. Brought some light into a really heavy topic. Read with some tissues close by.

I read The Book Thief for a college class two or three years ago and fell in love! I loved the characters, though sometimes they had me grumbling under my breath, yet I was invested in their lives. I was one of those who scoffed at the thickness of the book, but the plot grabbed me and dragged me to the bittersweet end. The end is definitely the part that needs to be read with tissues near by.

Read this book about a year ago and it was kind of slow at first but then it got so emotional I ended up crying all over it. Death's sense of humor and his misery as well is so believable and heartwrenching.

read this a while ago. I did like it, but I wasn't amazed by it. In the ending I got into it, but I never felt like WOW THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER you know? But it seems to me like everyone else is absolutely in love with it, so i'm kinda annoyed by the fact, that I didn't get the amazing reading experience that everyone else seems to have.

I read this book last year for a class and loved it, although like many of you, it took me awhile to get into it. One of the things that particularly grabbed my interest was when Death would hint at something that happens later on in the book. I kept reading hoping that the future wouldn't be as bad as foreshadowed. I thought this a very effective technique that Zusak used.

I also found out in this class that The Book Thief was published as adult fiction in Australia, but then as young adult fiction in the US.

I loved this book at the beginning, then started to feel it was going on too long, and then got pulled back into it. There were certain scenes and images that were so vivid and intense, they stuck with me. I think the impact of this book might depend on how many other books you've read about World War II and the genocide of the Jews. It isn't often that you get a book told from the point of view of an ordinary German family trying to survive in a country gone crazy. The point of view was unique and clever. The characters were flawed and beautiful. I'm not surprised that this was first published as an adult fiction. I didn't think it was YA at all.

Seriously was one of the saddest books I've ever read. It was heart breaking!!!

Really glad to know I'm not the only one that struggled at the beginning of the book, actually I'm struggling with it still because I just can't seem to get into the story. It makes me really sad though, I swear I was dying to read it and here I am falling asleep every time I open the book. Once Max came along I've to admit it made the story a little bit more catchy but still.. I'm not even that far yet, I'm currently on page 175 so I hope I get more into it soon. I already bought Kleenex.

ALSO -am I the only one that's really bothered about the fact that the goddamned death explains every little breath everyone takes? It's literally messing with my head Im not even done reading something between the actual characters when bam she's there interrupting. AGH.

Hands down this is my favorite stand alone book so far. I was bawling at the end. One thing I don't like about the book thief is how longwinded it is. Markus Zusak is very detailed in his writing, but sometimes too detailed. He can take a whole page describing what somebody is eating. But I love how he compares what he's describing to something totally unrelated and how he uses personification a lot. For example, he wrote about the sky being dark chocolate and the clouds in the sky constantly bump into each other, always apologizing about it.

Along with Looking for Alaska, this book is my favorite stand-alone of all time. I read the majority of this book on four plane rides just over a year ago during a trip to Washington D.C., and although it took me a while to understand what was happening, I was finished with the book before I could even comprehend how much I adored it. The imagery, the characters, the life lessons . . . all told by the most sardonic narrator of them all, Death. Beautiful writing; I also recommended reading Markus Zusak's other novel, I Am the Messenger.

This was a great book and a fantastic choice for all ages! My 14 year old read it and wouldn't stop talking about it. Haven't sold my 12 year old yet, but I'm certain if she reads it, she'll really enjoy it. (Plus it has the added benefit for sneaking in some history lessons)

Well I don't know how much history you're really going to get, but this is definitely one of my favorite books. Being from death's POV is so unique and the story is so moving - ah, love it! I've since passed the book along to my mom, grandmother, and two aunts!

For some reason, I did not like it.....it just was not captivating.....

In this book, the characters are so human-like, not because they are human, but because of their personalities, and the events in this book seems like it really happened, it is so descriptive. The story actually made me cry! This is a very good book!

I loved this book. One of my favourites this year. I really liked the story and the writing. And Death being the narrator, it was different (in a good way). I flew through it in 2-3 days (I think how the text was on the pages in Estonian book really helped)

The book thief is one of my favourite books. I thought it was so unique and interesting...I just loved it!

I really loved this book. I have to say its pretty unique in that the narrator is death. I laughed, smiled, and cried throughout this book. It is a book I will definitely remember.

Finished it a few weeks ago. I think it's definitely a must read as, I believe, it reflect WWII in such a brilliant way. You just get that sense of sadness and fear through the entire book. There were things I disliked (no suprises / suspense) but overall it's a very nice book.

I listened to the audiobook of this and the narrator did a fantastic job. I definitely cried. It's so good. I need to read more YA books like this.

I watched the movie before i read the book, but the book was seriously one of the most amazingly written, creative books I've ever read!

I love that this book was told in deaths perspective. I think it was interesting since it was a third party but also someone who didn't seem related to anyone else. I usually love historical fiction so this was good.

I think that I gave this book 4 stars because of good writing, but I didn't like it (extremely unpopular opinion haha). It was good historical fiction and unique, but I just didn't like it. It was somewhat funny but it didn't make me cry (I got spoiled for Rudy). This is not going to be a reread. Overall, decent/pretty good. :(

I read this last year. It was amazing. It had me laughing and crying. I really love that it was from Death's point of view.

One of the best books ever if you have not read the book thief then go find yourself a copy and read it NOW!! This book completely changed my perspective on World War 2. The fact that it was narrated by death is both sad and interesting. It is a very good but sad. The movie does not do it justice!!!
